Apple has unseated Google for the number one spot of major global brands, compiled by Interbrand, a marketing industry analyst. Ikea and Starbucks were numbers three and four, and number five was a surprising newcomer: al-Jazerra. I guess being on the front lines of a major world conflict really gets your name out there.
Actually al-Jazeera is banned from operating in Iraq for about 8 months now, yet it managed to be on top 5. It’s not all about having reporters on front lines.
How in this world they managed to squeeze in the top 10 is beyond me, but to take first place, that’s just a joke. What a useless study. 🙁

I resent what this implies…prove it.
For some reason, not sure why, I personally feel that Ferrari is quite a LOT heavier brand name than Apple. But hey, maybe a coool beautiful sexy car like Ferrari which makes any man or woman droool is just not as “strong brand” as Apple which makes you just say, they do nice stuff…
Wake up n smell the coffee
The author was supposed to talk about the most recognized brands in the world. Instead he gave us reasons why he dislikes one of them (7 paragraphs out of 13 disparage al-Jazeera). By the way, in the August 2004 survey of the best global brands, BusinessWeek lists Apple at the 43rd place, even behind Ikea. This is what appears on Interbrand website. Where did this Apple numero uno FUD come from ? I checked the story because there was something fishy about it.
Get it straight, people.
FUD = fear, uncertainty, and doubt.
The term is supposed to be applied to the act of disparaging your competitor’s products with nothing but unsubstantiated, knee-jerk reactions designed to make an emotional appeal rather than a careful, well-reasoned and substantiated criticism.
How exactly could “Apple FUD” have anything to do with what you are talking about?
Anti al-Jazeera FUD
Al Jazeera is often the mouthpiece for terrorism how is the description of al-jazeera in this article FUD?
“Al-Jazeera …has become renowned for its decisions to air tapes that the western media have considered too bloody or violent to screen.”
I guess neither NBC, ABC, CBS or Fox have ever screened bloody or violent tapes.
“It has also frequently been the first channel to receive messages from figures on the run from western authorities.”
Of course, no fugitive has ever granted exclusive access to CBS News (60 minutes) or the others.
“United States forces bombed the channel’s Baghdad bureau earlier in the Iraq war”.
Obviously, God granted the United States the right to bomb reporters in a foreign country.
“the US Defence Department has labelled al-Jazeera “an unbalanced political entity”
Great, when US soldiers slaughter thousands of people in Irak, Panama, Honduras, Vietnam, …, that’s another proof that the US Defense Department is a balanced political entity.
Like I said, try as I might, I couldn’t find the poll mentioned by the author, even on Interbrand website.
What is Starbucks doing up there. I think I’ve heard or seen the name somewhere but I don’t have a clue about what it might be.
“Al Jazeera is often the mouthpiece for terrorism”
you mean, they broadcast statements? The BBC used to broadcast statements from the IRA – did that make it a mouthpiece for terrorism, too? Or just a conduit for information?
Yes, broadcasting tapes of Bin Laden and his associates is acting as a mouthpiece for terrorism which is why the Western Media no longer does it, but Al Jazeera, which is sensationalist even compared to other Middle Eastern stations, has no such qualms. The bloodier it is, the happier they are to show it.
or could it be that some stations and media outlets are collaborating with the “other” terrorists by not highlighting certain events and facts? How many people died in t he twin towers? 3000? how many innocent civilians died in iraq? many more. how many american/british tv channels highlight that fact? or show pictures of rumsfled shaking hands with saddam hussein?
there is a reason why the american publkic are considered amongst the most ignorant of external events – and their media is largely a cause – they should be MORE like al-jazeerah.

Its you and other Europeans that are ignorant of what and how Americans get their news, how they think and what standards others are held to. Americans are well aware of what is going on outside of their country, the difference is that our culture is generally not a bunch of busy bodies trying to be involved in other peoples/countries business unless there is a vested national interest or a greater good need. This is the fundimental difference between modern European mono cultures and American civilization. You like to pretend you care but when it comes down to actually doing something about world issue you balk. Typical whining European drivel i get tired of hearing it.
Umm, in what way does Ferrari influence the automobile industry? Almost None. It’s a relatively small company catering to an elite crowd and that’s about it.
Apple on the other hand has brought about the portable digital music player revolution and is about to bring the small computer revolution. Apple’s iPod has inspired dozens of other companies, big and small, to start offering music download services and music players.
It’s not about how much a company makes people drool, it’s about how a company influences the industry it’s doing business in.
Or even more to the point. After a millenia or so of almost continuous warfare, NOW the Europeans are all about peace. Now they they want to lecture on it as if they’d invented it. You people think America is warlike? Guess what, it’s your fault. You showed us how to do it and dragged us through two World Wars in a row just to put the icing on the cake.
ah, so the American civilisation just descended from the sky in 1776, did it? And here was me thinking Americans were just Europeans who fancied a change of scenery. Boy, I’m dumb.
Yup, from the sky. They weren’t obeying my orders and kept talking this liberty thing… So I kicked them out.
