The brand new AvantGo version offers improved wireless synchronization; an integrated Internet browser; real-time searching of AvantGo channels; a redesigned user interface with tabbed navigation, customized channel layout and small-screen optimized navigation. Also, users will now be able to add and remove channels directly from their device. Please note that OSNews fully supports most mobile browsers, including AvantGo (just create a custom subscription on your my.avantgo.com). Additionally, the text-only version of OSNews has been now optimized to look a bit better (3 weeks of slow dial-up in Greece forced me to use Firefox without “image loading” and so I took the time to optimize the site’s looks for low-bandwidth usage). Here is a screenshot (subscriber’s OSNews version is shown).
I stopped using AvantGo on my Palm Pilot because of all the advertising.. Not to mention signing up just to format and store web pages! I used a free software package instead that had less features. I guess that’s the real choice here: Ease of use or no ads. I’ll choose no ads every time.
They still don’t officially support neither Linux nor Mac os X.

Just discovered how well I can use OSnews on my DoCoMo mobile, gives me something to do on the subway home from work, great job!
No problem! I am really happy when I see mobile users use OSNews, as we support most phone browsers.
Out of curiosity, do you use an OpenWave or a NetFront browser on your DoCoMo phone? Looking at my mobile-only statistics I see that your user agent is this one: DoCoMo/2.0 N900i(c100;TB;W24H12) which does not detail the browser…
Ah, that’s better… although it is nice to be able to read OSNews on my mobile, I much prefer sitting infront of a keyboard when posting comments ๐
Actually, I have no idea about what browser my phone uses (don’t think I have a choice, or if I do, it is the default)… The phone maker is NEC (hence the N in N900i, which is the phone model), but maybe the browser is provided by DoCoMo?
Usually DoCoMo either pays for OpenWave’s UP.Browser or Access’ Netfront to include on their phones, they don’t have their own in-house browser. If this is an i-Mode phone or it has Macromedia Flash capability, then it most probably it is a NetFront browser.
BTW, the QVGA 240×320 screen your NEC features must be really sweet.
I went to their website and downloaded the latest version for Palm OS 5, it claimed that it was version 5.7 (build 35).
Where is 6.0 located?
I have the same problem, no sign of version 6 on the Avantgo site…
v6.0 is what the user agent is reporting. v5.7 is what the web site is saying. Confusing indeed.
What are the alternatives to avantgo?

How do I get osnews in avantgo? Baby steps please….

Sunrise, JPluck, Plucker and iSillo.

Go to http://my.avantgo.com and create an account. Login with that account. Go to “My Account” on the far right of the page and then click on “Create a Personal Channel”. There, insert the osnews address.
Download the AvantGo software for Windows/PalmOS (depends what desktop and PDA you have of course, there are several download options depending on your hardware). Install it. Next time you sync, AvantGo will get installed on your PDA and the osnews page will be downloaded on your PDA too, to read it offline.
AvantGo also works as an online browser btw.
A few years ago I used the HP Jornada Pocket PC. The two things I used it for most was AvantGo and reading PeanutPress (now Palm Digital Media) eBooks.
Two years ago I switched to the Sharp Zaurus, and while I feel it is superior to the Pocket PC, it can’t do Avantgo nor encrypted eBooks. Needless to say I don’t use it much but for the occasional e-mail and Project Gutenberg eBook, but Robert Louis Stevenson isn’t quite as thriling as Alan Dean Foster!
I had forgotten about AvantGo. I have a feeling I’ll be grabbing the Jornada back from my wife.
I would be glad if i could even install the shit.
I had to use the english version for a while, because there was no actual german client.
now, every time i try to install the german client it bails out with the message “cant install over a different language version, uninstall first”. but as you can easily guess, i already HAVE uninstalled the english version…
and avantgo’s pseudosupport is less than helpful, all they do is sending me the same (wrong) manual uninstall instructions (for WinCE devices, i have a palm, which i tell them over and over again) over and over… with waiting periods of several months between my mails and their mails.
guess i have to see how it is without web pages on my pda… wait, i already have been livinig without web pages on my pda for almost a year… figures.
It finally supports the full 320×480 resolution of my T3 ๐
I was occasionally getting graphics corruption bugs too, those also seem to have gone.
Yup this baby is pretty sweet, my watch, my sceduler, alarm clock, my digital camera, hell I can even make phone calls, tis everything to me. but it is also last years model. this year they will all have 3D sound and digital money. I will keep this one until next year by which time it will be positively old-fashioned…
Can anyone tell me where the 6.0 release is at? I have been looking since this article was published and all I can see in their download section is v5.7…
Thanks a bunch!
