I downloaded both versions, the Nvidia one and the standard one. Neither one will sucessfully start the X server on my xp2400+ system with G-force 2 MX400 video card, however the Nvidia one boots ok on my other two systems which both have older Nvidia cards in them. Other than that it looks great. I already did a hard drive install on a old Celeron 400 MHz system W/380 meg ram, and it runs well.
i did not do a harddrive install but i downloaded PCLinuxOS-0.8.iso and burned it to CD-R and it runs good from the CD, i am sure it would run even better if i did a HD install…
I too downloaded both versions and installed the p8 version. But not without small problems. The Drake partition tool didn’t allow much flexibilty. I backed out of the install and used QTParted to make a partition. The install itself was very slow compared to so many other distros I have tested. Later I wanted to change DHCP to my faster static IP address. Of course it asked for my root password, but, then it wouldn’t accept it. I used my regular root password during the install and put it in the second time. I know I entered it correctly. However, it refused that password when I tried to change to the static numbers. PClinusOS will be a nice distro in the future when texstar gets rid of a few more bugs.
I can’t forsee including so many P2P apps as being a good thing, and is it just me or does KDE look ugly when compared to the newest incarnations of GNOME. Still I don’t mean to rain on anyones parade, best of luck to these guys and I hope that they continue their hard work.
What did you find lacking in the Mandrake partition tool?
You were correct to challenge me. I just now re-installed p8 to see again what I disliked about DiskDrake. It worked fine. I can only guess that it wasn’t what I used so many times in different installations, so I was put off. That is not a good excuse but the only one I can think of. To set the record straight, DiskDrake worked fine for me.
Actually, I wasn’t attempting to criticise or challenge, I was planning on evaluating the missing functionality and submitting it as a request for enhancement to the diskdrake developer if necessary. I’m glad to hear this won’t be needed
