GnomeMeeting, the VoIP and IP telephony application for Linux systems, just released version 1.2. It will be the last release to support only H.323, as next release will also support SIP. The new version sports integration with Novell Evolution 2.00, PC-To-Phone calls with no additional hardware and free codecs, and Rendez-Vous support. See http://www.gnomemeeting.org for more info.
I know the error is in the release notes, but it’s spelled “rendezvous”. Given all the “Jag-wire”, “Jag-wyre” stuff that Apple folks subjected us to before 10.2, I hope “Rendez-Vous” doesn’t catch on.
It is fixed now. Thanks for the report.
In the early 4.0.x Comunicator versions there was a program like Gnomemeeting and Netmeeting. Anybody knows what happened?
It’s just my opinion but I think that GTK/gnome apps look so much cleaner than most in KDE. Cases in point are GnomeMeeting and GAIM. Both excellent apps.
No. both of these are themable toolkits. they dont determine aesthetics by themselves
> I know the error is in the release notes,

Actually, ‘rendez-vous’ is a French word and French doesn’t allow the ugly ‘rendezvous’ concatenation. If you say rendezvous, that’s a French mistake. If you say rendez-vous, it’s a Jobsian mistake.
I’ll go for the Jobsian mistake, but correct French.
It doesn’t matter anyway since Apple recently renamed it OpenTalk :
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/07/21/1318221
A really horrible name if you ask me. They should behave and just keep its real name, Zeroconf.
The design of the apps does, though. GNOME apps in general use fewer, larger widgets, which to some people looks ‘cleaner’.
“Rendezvous” is an English word adopted from French. It’s proper spelling is the English form, not the French form. It’s just like “verdant” is the proper spelling in English, even though the word derives from French, and “verdoyant” is the proper spelling in French.
then citing gaim as an example for the clean look of gtk doesnt count
I will agree that a lot of KDE apps are too up-front and reveal their astounding amount of features too readily to new users in some cases. But then again, how is this relevant to the article?
This might be a good time to bring up how KDE technologies will allow for Kopete (competitor of GAIM) will allow for voice/video chat with Konference (competitor of GnomeMeeting) in an upcoming release (sweetness). How cool would it be to have complete compatibility with MSN Messenger!?
Then again, to each his own! Use what you like on your PC, and let others do the same — no need to put down the other choice.
Congrats to the GnomeMeeting team. They are definitely filling what was a gap in the FLOSS community and serving it VERY well. I hope their PC-to-Phone feature brings some money in for them. I can’t wait for your SIP support! It would be even more awesome if you integrated GAIM contacts and allowed for skype calls (with it’s new open API) — ‘twould be glorious to have a gnome skype for the gnomes!

“then citing gaim as an example for the clean look of gtk doesnt count”
How true. Having said that, Gaim is my IM client of choice, even though I use KDE.
then citing gaim as an example for the clean look of gtk doesnt count
Why not?
GAIM is part of GNOME and is based on GTK, It does count, that’s then difference of having a HIG and not having a HIG.
“GAIM is part of GNOME”
gaim is NOT a part of Gnome
” It does count, that’s then difference of having a HIG and not having a HIG.”
neither does it follow the HIG closely.
“How true. Having said that, Gaim is my IM client of choice, even though I use KDE.”
i use it even in windows but that doesnt change my argument
gaim is NOT a part of Gnome
Not yet, but it will be.
neither does it follow the HIG closely.
According who?
Not yet, but it will be.
Unfortunately, I have lost the link but I have read a discussion some time ago between two or three GNOME developers on that and they were basically saying that they would adopt Gossip (http://www.imendio.com/projects/gossip/) as soon as the GAIM core is splitted from the UI.
According who?
The GNOME developers themselves. That’s why they want to push Gossip instead.
Note that I don’t have anything against GAIM and I will probably still use it even if Gossip is ever chosen as the IM client for GNOME (just like I use Firefox instead of the craptastic Epiphany).
So GAIM is having the same problems Galeon had.
“Not yet, but it will be. ”
no. gaim developers are not interested. unless they propose it to the gnome team its not going to be considered. you went from a wrong claim to misleading speculations
“According who? ”
according to the HIG of course. go read it
You are right.
I was speculating, I was confused by the fact of all the GNOME based distros include GAIM as the IM client.
i believe they called it rendezvous in the first place because that was apple’s implementation of zeroconf. now they had to change it to opentalk. sort of like apple’s implementation of displaypdf is called quartz extreme for example? or their implementation of openstep is called cocoa… etc
Also, Zeroconf is the IETF name for a whole suite of activities and standards, not all of which are implemented by Apple’s OS X, while Rendezvous is Apple’s name not only for the Zeroconf standard technologies they’ve implemented, but also for some related Apple specific stuff.
* IPv4 Link Local Addressing and Duplicate Address Detection
– Build ad hoc network (e.g. at a meeting place) without routers or manual configuration
– Some support in all today’s serious desktop OSs. No setup on Mac, one-time setup on Linux or Windows.
* IPv6 autoconfigured addressing
– Ad hoc network compatible with IPv6 internet.
– Automatically transitions to Internet capability when a router is plugged in.
– Full support in all today’s serious desktop OSs. No setup on Mac or Linux. One command to type on Windows
* Link local multicast DNS for name resolution
– Ad hoc naming, no DNS server to set up.
– Full support in MacOS. Optional in Linux. Windows retains legacy SMB name broadcasts
* DNS service discovery (optionally using multicast)
– Announce and discover useful services (e.g GnomeMeeting users can see each other on the network)
– Doesn’t need to use IANA “well known ports”
– Discovery can be ad hoc or centrally administrated
– Supported by some Ethernet printers, SAN devices etc.
– Good support in MacOS. Support starting to appear in some Linux and Windows apps.
SIP support, oh yes!
AFAIK gnomemeeting doesn’t support msn messenger (unfortunatelly people here can’t use anything else it seems… :/)…will it be supported?
Or perhaps there is some other app that can cooperate with msn messenger?
It will support Windows Messenger as soon as there is SIP support, but I think MSN Messenger is using a closed protocol. I have to investigate a bit more though as I’m not sure about that.
Is this the new version.
