For the uninitiated… what’s RISC OS’s claim to fame? What’s it good for?

One of the earliest desktop OS’s to do decent multi-tasking and memory management. Just imagine doing workable desktop publishing in 2MB of memory back in 1994 – !Impression anyone?
You can take a look here: http://www.virtualacorn.co.uk and here: http://www.drobe.co.uk/ and here: http://www.aci.com.pl/mwichary/guidebook/interfaces/riscos
Though I sadly don’t get chance to use Risc OS anymore, I know that there is a pretty tight-knit and friendly community out there so if you’re interested, go say hi.
IMHO Risc OS should have gone further…
We used 32bit Acorn Archimedes at school back in the 1980s. Excellent fast stable machine, built in ethernet networking between all the machinese, with a very graphical easy to use interface.
Took Windows 15 years to almost catch up.
Yet someone Windows on a 2GHz machine is still responds much slower. Its a mystery!
no one can tell you what riscos is you have to see it for yourself
“no one can tell you what riscos is you have to see it for yourself ” i think that your right i have used RiscOS on Acorn Computers at school in the early 1990’s they were great machines, and they were more responsive than my 3ghz P4 now. but they just couldn’t compete atleast Acron lives on in ARM (originally stood for Acorn Risc Machines)
riscos is a lovley os to use, i’ve used most os’s and i still wander back to riscos, i do a little programming, and alot of web graphics, dtp and graphic desgin stuff, and i find after using the risc os gui turning to mac windows or linux turns me into a homocidal maniac. genuine drag and drop multitasking, the only thing sukky about riscos is the lack of a capable web browser, but i’m assured that there is a firefox port on the way. whats the point in having a p4 3ghz if you cant actually do anything well exept play games?
