cool jut in time for the new school semester ๐
This would be the first time Apple actually shipped something toward the beginning of the designated timeframe instead of 11:59 PM on the last day.
i just watched wwdc video where they introduced preview version of tiger. damn it looked cool and has many awesome technical improvements, like core image & video (those demos were damn cool). spotlight also is much more than i first expected by checking the website. video revealed it more, its also great. very worthy successor for panther.!
I’m going to buy a powermac within the month. I know in the past that apple has offered things for free upgrades to the next release if you by your mac within a certain timeframe before the next release. Is it only a month or so? Be nice to get it for free come january. But I’m not going to hold off on buying a new computer a few months to save 129 bucks.
If they ship in January, it will only be 14 months from their last paid update. That is in line with their annual subscription for their OS. $129 per year. Incredible. When are we to revolt at these unacceptable prices? When are we to revolt at this frequency of sucking money out of their dedicated clients? If you add up the cost of all of these updates in the last five years, you could buy a PC for crying out loud!
“$129 per year.”
They also announced a while back that they were slowing it to every year and a half, and a btw, a subscription means you are forced to pay, not that you have an option to get a revamped OS once every year and a half.
Um, you don’t HAVE to upgrade. I have friends who are perfectly happy with 10.2 and probably won’t get 10.3 until it sells for peanuts after 10.4 comes out.
Not everybody upgrades, because not everybody has to upgrade. Same reason why there are multitudes of PC users still on Windows 98, ME, 2000, etc.
The main reason people buy a Mac is because of the OS it runs. I’m willing to bet that generally speaking, Mac users are more willing (and more able) to fork out another $129 for the next version of the OS.
huh?
“btw, a subscription means you are forced to pay”
i have magazine subscriptions i am not forced to pay. i choose to pay for them. what are you talking about?
So “Anonymous” do you actually have a Mac?
No one is forced to buy OS X every year.
Note: I run Slackware Linux both for home and business, one thing I do know is that OS X is an impressive operating system and no one can really complain about the cost considering the advances being made.
Note2: Someone running Windows XP has to “upgrade” their OS with sutiable security products so when is there going to be a revolt against this money sucking process?

A suscription means a recurring expense as in you signed up for a service and the terms of service requires said recurring expense.
Apple’s OS is not a subscription. You may chose to buy it or not. So there is not need to get your panties in a twist. You are not forced to buy it.
BTW you can get Apples OSes cheaper. Educationa dn corporate discounts make it very easy to get Apple upgrades for $69.99.
“i have magazine subscriptions i am not forced to pay. i choose to pay for them. what are you talking about? ”
You paid in advance, and were forced to pay for a set amount of time, not a per issue basis.
“BTW you can get Apples OSes cheaper. Educationa dn corporate discounts make it very easy to get Apple upgrades for $69.99.”
Side note to that – no one ever pays $129, and I wish people would stop saying that. No one ever pays list price for anything. I’ve paid $90 for the past few versions of OS X with no discounts.
“pivx qwik-fix pro is free
zone alarm is free and so are dozens more firewalls
computer associates ezarmor anti virus software is free as are many others
ad-aware and spybot search and destroy are free
too many pop up blockers to mention are free
security on a windows machine doesnt have to cost a penny.”
Sounds like a lot of work for something that shouldn’t be an issue.
“Sounds like a lot of work for something that shouldn’t be an issue.”
takes about as much effort as repairing permissions in os x after every update or software install or system change.
They are not free. I have a 300Mhz B&W Mac that seems just as fast as my 2.4Ghz P4 running W2K at work. Load times are basically equal; the Mac is just slow and the Wintel box loses about 30% CPU due to the AV software.
If I purchase a fast CPU, I want to use it for running my software not running AV, anti-spyware, SPAM blockers, …
Guys.. This is only speculation of macminute.. Nothing more..
The promo ends because Apple will be anouncing iLife 05, not Mac Os X Tiger..
Apple have anounced that it will be slowing Mac Os X upgrades cycles.. So, I Think they will do..
It’s possible that they announce Tiger with all the feautures in January, and shipping in March..
No ones knows except those that work at Apple…
If I had to guess, I don’t think Apple will ship Tiger till after the new iMac sales slow down a bit. They want new users to purchase Tiger when it comes out and not get free upgrades to Tiger because they purchased it within a given period from Tiger’s release. Perhaps May, or April?
yea, this is BS. Apple would never release a surprise OS like that. Also, there havent been enough seeded builds yet.
i just watched wwdc video where they introduced preview version of tiger. damn it looked cool and has many awesome technical improvements, like core image & video (those demos were damn cool).
I agree with th. Core Image and Core Video were the most impressive parts of the demo for me. For anyone who has not seem them, they come about three quarters of the way through the keynote video.
It was said that Core Video was based on the techniques developed for the Motion video application, which has already been released for Panther. People who buy Motion now are essentially getting some of the Tiger frameworks early.
If Tiger was to ship in Jan that would be good, but to be fair when any Co. says “first half of 2005” I read it as May/June 2005.
Same as TV ads say “under 500” (read 499) and now save XXX cash (by spending XXX cash you hadn’t budgetted for…)
Personally I think Panther is good and I look forward to the NeXT Step on (ho ho see what I did there… ) </joke>
Subscription normally means an agreement to purchase on a regular basis, possibly with inducement to do so… (Reader’s Digest anyone?)
However OS updates etc. are not “subscriptions”. I have machines running Mac OS 6.0.7 through to 10.3.5 – *I* pick the “best” OS for any particular Mac based on its age, usage and capabilities – *best* isn’t always the same as last possible…
I also have two Windows boxes and a FreeBSD/KDE machine (yes I am sad – I hve a total of 10+ machines of various vintages up and running in my house…)
HUGE COMMENT: Windows is a perfctly “usable” OS if you don’t need to go online with that box… Only my OSX10.3.5 Mac is online. I’m only trying the FreeBSD/KDE for interest so as yet I can’t really comment on it, I’m finding it a bit harder to get to grips with but then again I’m not yet familiar with it like I am Windows/MacOS
Yes Monopoly is bad – I agree that a multiplex of good and interoperable OS’s is probably the future BUT, closer inerconnetion means EVERYONE needs to be more security aware because cross platform integration means cross platform security issues will appear.
*nix and its variants (including my beloved Mac OSX) are good and probably streets ahead of Windows, but no OS is invunerable.
Let’s stop squabbling and start to work on OS integration that closes out the spammers, viruses, malware, etc.
I use OSX and I’m glad I do, but โ I aint so smug as to believe it the “unhackable” grail…

“”takes about as much effort as repairing permissions in os x after every update or software install or system change.”
You don’t need to do that though. It’s there just in case. Now if you are going to bring up this crap again, please bring it to the OS Wars forum. There’s no need to annoy people trying to read a discussion about the article at hand.

That’s what I’m thinking too.”
…. are you feeding the trolls?
“why are you feeding the trolls?”
Because he keeps trolling even when nobody listens. He’s even been banned before.
looks like the troll has been banned for good now!!! ๐
In the Apple Universe means a 6 week shipping delay.
PantherPPC, I suggest that you should stop responding to trolls and wind down a bit yourself too. I see your name far too often in the reported-abused comments too.
1) Subscription works on the basis that once your subscription runs out, the software you are running disables itself. Buy a copy of Microsoft Office subscription, after 12months, the software disables itself where by you ring up Microsoft and purchase another year of access. Infact, its less of a subsciption and more of a lease. You’re leasing software, which for business *could* be better value than spending money purchasing new copies every three years (if that is their upgrade cycle).
2) I doubt that Tiger would be released in January, there are still more featurees to be added, and from the information from the 10.3.6, they’re already back porting features from tiger, so the assumption can be made that Tiger is still another 5-6months away.
The expo will most likely be where Steve will show off the feature complete versions which will be stuck in code freeze and are being tested and bugs being submitted.
Eugenia, sorry if I’m reported a lot, but I’m really not trying to abuse these forums, and I certainly don’t mean to offend anyone. I’ll refrain myself more from now on though.
And to the related posters, wow, I feel loved.
I can see them releasing earlier than originally announced, as it sounds like there are less bugs than expected being reported from the developers release…
Another possible explanation would be that it is an attempt to offset the fact that the developers copy is already available via Bittorrent, E-Donkey, Kazaa, etc.
Only thing I question them not getting it out prior to the christmas feeding frenzy… But then Apple has never been that good at marketing or managing money. Maybe they are thinking that they can double hit. People buy Macs before christmas, then you hit them up for money with the new OS immediately after.
Make this a subscription service and cut way down on the bullsh!t that goes on around here. This is a great place for news, but the discussion end of things is in a very sorry state. Just my .02
Just in time to get it with my iMac purchase. Can’t wait!
I just wonder why Microsoft hasn’t embrased opensource like Apple(x11, safarie, darwin, etc). Could be MS’ downfall.
If I were to speculate on the reason for the end date on that promotion, I’d say that iLife ’05 will probably be out in January, not Tiger.
Tiger is a huge development effort, which from all reports still has a lot of new development going on. On the other hand, some of the Mac rumor sites have recently been talking about iLife updates (specifically GarageBand updates) in the January timeframe.
Is that they take their time making powerbook disconnect from wireless networks when they go to sleep, to avoid expired leases problem on dhcp run networks….
That’s what must be taking them time ๐
