Interesting paper about using Plan 9 for pervasive computing.
Also on the same site some demo videos of plan B , a plan9 based OS. Two videos (low/high quality) are available.

I have never tried Plan 9 but their mascot (Glenda if i remember correctly) sure is cuter than Tux or the BSD demons. Almost made me want to install it.
How very Ed Wood.
the videos are in wmv format, which my truly free and none patent encoumbered OS can’t play..
Call me when they get encoded in Ogg Theora, I would love to see them, I heard and read great things about plan9 in the past but never got around to installing a copy.
if they made an OS for a Wintel PC that is like OS/400.
The site only seems to say that “The design owes much to Plan 9 and to Off++.“. So is it actually based on Plan 9 code?
“So is it actually based on Plan 9 code?”
It seems to be just plan9, as far as I could tell their session looked exactly like the plan9 I saw a looong time ago. At least the window manager is exactly the same.
[i]Unix claims to have the best video player(s) which claims to read wm better than Windows itself… So what’s wrong ? </li>
Who the hell made that claim? I’m not saying Windows does… But the original poster has a point… Unix-ish site… Unix-ish people… The latest Microsoft codec?
Please, use Mpeg… If someone’s willing to download an 80MB video, they’ll wait for the 160MB video…
Uh?? Why do people keep complain about this crap while wmv format supports in Unix?
This video is terrible – don’t waste your time. Just a few sci-profs hacking plan 9 to do white board, x10 type integration and groupware smartbuilding type shit – whopdie doo – its all in file streams, cause its ANSI C plan 9 – viva la files!
*rolls eyes*
Well, that was a waste of a 5 mins download….
Nothing much to see, Plan B (or mainly Plan 9) runing a whiteboard (with pen acting like a mouse), motion detectors, door locks and a very good implementation of WHO, to know who is where in the building.
That’s about it….
GUI wise, Plan B looks like a very very old OS.
The real question is… Why Plan B? Linux could have done the same job. Mabe it’s just for the fun of it….
Why BSD? Why “SkyOS”?
That’s a slippery slope there partner. Same if I said, Why linux? Surely they could fix windows to do anything linux can…. (THIS IS JUST A OFF-THE-CUFF BAD EXAMPLE). People do these things because they enjoy it, not necessarily for the good of mankind, community, or even the neighborhood. It was a challenge and it was there. I imagine its a lot like these guys that install linux on a gameboy (You have to ask wtf for?) or guys who climb everest in their underwear.
Actually, I looked at Plan B video, the OS itself seems very high tech like, stable and secure, well that’s my impression. I was impressed with some of the things presented in the video such as the white board drawing, the sensors etc.
please encode it using xvid =E
Quote: 99% of the people don’t have Ogg/Theora.
Eugenia I love to read your site and I love the threads on OS topics, but this comment is shortsighted.
As long as the majority keeps encoding in Windows only formats and refuses to use crossplatform encoding, this problem will not change. It might be that 99% of people don’t have Ogg/Theora, but if these format issues keep being shoved under the carpet, I can guarantee you that other formats will never see the light of day and drive competiton and innovation.
I know it was the choice of the “PlanB” crew to use WMV, but still, its a weird choice. 98% percent of the WMV users are most likely absolutely not interested in “PlanB” Its the alternative crowd that wants to look at it and preferably in a viewable format, without having to purchase a videoplayer or break the law by illegally using Windows binary files just to watch a demo.
Its sad that the mindset that “Windows is what everybody uses” is so pervasive, that people don’t think anymore about their intended audience and encode to Windows only. Its carelessness like that that is cutting out a large piece of the audience that could have been reachable.
I know that responding to moderated down comments get modded down. In this case I don’t really mind, because I know that the people who don’t want to accept a “sanitized” version of the tread as reality, will read this anyway.
“Why Plan B? Linux could have done the same job. Mabe it’s just for the fun of it….”
Linux can’t do the job unless they threw in filesystem namespaces and an easy way to mound processes to directories.
My favorite bit was when the tinny music drowned out the mumbly man’s voice completely. Could have done without the post-production.
I have a Plan9 live cd. I don’t use it much. Ok, ever. Nice idea though.
> How very Ed Wood.
I’m glad SOMEONE else picked up on that…
I must say their tast in music are impecable! (LOL)
Interesting video, I would have prefered MPG though
What’s wrong with the music? But yea, it’s a bit hard to hear what the guys says, I hope in their next video the voice is clearer.
