This has got to be the best operating system in existance today… per byte.
Theres plenty of drawbacks to working that close to the hardware, primarily development time, but with a pre-emptive muli-tasking multi-threading GUI desktop OS that fits on a single floppy, the Menuet devs are showing that there are plenty of advantages too.
Does MenuetOS work on older systems? Could be a big opening for it in places like schools and 3rd world countries where newer hardware isn’t available.
MenuetOS is not a complete OS and it does not run needed apps by today’s world, like modern browsers or word processors. It is a test/experiement, like other hobby OSes are. It is not suitable for schools or businesses. At least, not yet.
Aleast 12 yrs ago, I came across a windowing system named Menuet. IIRC a Byte mag ad described it as a GUI running on DOS. Alas my 5-1/4″ floppy was unreadable.
I wonder if its the same developer(s).
For an amazing floppy demo comparison, I just booted my QNX Internet Appliance Toolkit Demo floppy on a P200 box. It includes the QNX realtime OS, Photon microGUI, Voyager web browser, TCP/IP, dialer, embedded web server, editor, file browser and the Towers Of Hanoi game in JavaScript.
sweet project but they just cant stay on a floppy forever. I think the new look is a step in the right direction but it really could use some work. The menu seem to take up a little to much space.
Do any of you know of open source projects that specifically aim to match or exceed the QNX One Floppy Demo? I continue to be amazed by it; it has _very_ low requirements, and runs smoothly under QEMU on a G4 800. I don’t think any open source OS can match that – has anybody accepted the challenge?
The GUI looks very slick, but the window decoration stands out like a sore thumb.
If it was my call, I’d make it the same style as the task bar, as well as making the space above and below the close window button vertically centred on the window title.
Apart from that, the project seems very impressive. I’ll have to give it a go later.
i’ve already done a Windows style for the new GUI i designed, but mike was having some problems with it so it didnt make it into this release, hopefully it will make it into the next one
Looks OK, I’d just square off the menu (the rounded edges don’t look so hot) and shrink the logo to fit the size of the menubar. It’s a little too over-the-top at the moment, but the general idea is cool.
I liked the old look better.
Hopefuly you can switch around…

It runs well on my AMD 200 Mhz btw.

Anyway kudos to this Menuet project.
best little OS out there….keep up the great work

QNX Floppy demo only requires 8Mb RAM btw.
Add to that the fact it works on 486/25Mhz…
But stuff on the QNX floppy is heavily compressed (is MenuetOS compressed ?)
Leo.
“But stuff on the QNX floppy is heavily compressed (is MenuetOS compressed ?)”
Nope, not one bit.
This looks really nice, good work! I am looking forward to further updates on this project!

throw in tiny-linux with stuff like these could become possible. i am not sure anyone tried thou.
could you imagine if they decided to go bigger, make it an os for a small CD and develop a good user base?
It’s really nice, but I don’t think anyone is going to use it dedicated.
if i could run one of the controller program for my small cnc milling id run that os on the controler laptop
heh, looks good, I like it

Scratch the “space above and below the” part in the above post.
I like the new look pretty cool.
btw, I’ve gotten online with my 386sx 25mhz system that has 12mb of ram and a 10base t isa nic using the qnx floppy ran pretty darn well too.
Current version only takes up 964kb on the floppy. That leaves quite a bit of room to add a bunch more stuff
Yeah, definetily looks good, congrats Youlle, it looks great

Great OS , but I think I will never use it as my main os.
Great OS to show off what I like to see. No wasted bits.
The interface looks much better. :>

I like the new interface.
im following this project from ever since and it seems quite cool nowadays (as it was before)
keep up guys!
There’s a nice BSD distribution that fits on a single floppy disk i’d like to share with you: http://www.closedbsd.org
screenies dont look to nice.
it’s a good job to show how my PC can do, and how i can do with my PC. Still need more improvement, but i always say it’s great.
