AMD demonstrated a dual-core Opteron design a week before Intel was set to demo theirs. In other Opteron news Sun has become the first tier 1 vendor to offer Opteron workstations: the single CPU W1100z and the dual CPU W2100z. Update: AMD Athlon 64 3800 CPU Review.

So you post it incorrectly twice?
We had IBM IntelliStation A Pro Opteron workstations running Debian pure64 before the Suns were available for purchase.
“Sun has become the first tier 1 vendor to offer Opteron workstations”
I suppose that makes IBM tier 0.
We had IBM IntelliStation A Pro Opteron workstations running Debian pure64 before the Suns were available for purchase.
My apologies… perhaps the story should be corrected.
Also, the correct URL on the dual processor story is here:

But perhaps a more exciting story is IBM’s announcement for support of dual Opterons:

beos motto was
“one processor per person is not enough”
once upon a time that was be inc’s motto.
and be inc was right that the best way to make use of multiple processors was pervasive multiprocessing software design.
i wonder what be os and multimedia software and games would be like if be inc today were to make its os 100% legacy free and 100% native to the dual-core opteron amd64, including expanded memory address space and additional 16 GPR and SSE registers. (along with support for other modern hardware such as dx9-compliant 3d cards and audio)
i remember swooning over 2-processor 604e’s running on a powerpc machine way back in 1998 with 128mb ram.
imagine a 4-dual core amd opteron with 8gb of ram!
go amd – they have consistently outperformed intel … techncially and in their business. intel should be embarassed with the overly complex heat generators they throw at us.

Wow, you set your sights pretty low. Why low-ball the RAM?? Put the full 64 GB in there. 8 gig. Yeesh! You youngsters are so lame.
