Xandros announced the release of version 2.5 of the Xandros Desktop OS with an updated CrossOver Office suite. Xandros Desktop 2.5 now offers an upgraded CrossOver Office 3.0.1., supporting Lotus Notes 6.5.1, Microsoft Project 2000/2002, and Microsoft Outlook XP. Current Xandros Desktop OS users can upgrade the software with a single click. All versions of the Xandros Desktop OS now include Linux kernel 2.4.24 and version 1.6 of the Mozilla communications suite.
Sounds good to me. Nice to see that they aren’t charging a bunch for the update either, shows they value their customers and the trust that was put in them when their product was purchased.
Eugenia, working hard today! 9 articles at once.
Xandros is so good a Linux Distro. It’s very much underrated. Their focus is generally on the stable branch but won’t sacrifice technology. I love it.
I totally love Xandros, but why couldnt they update KDE to a newer version with this version update? It’s still using 3.1.5; and I think they should have upgraded to 3.2.3, or at least 3.2+.
Else…looks great. I will update it when I get to my office computer (wich runs Xandros).
wouldn’t a +.5 release be big enough to move to a 2.6 kernel?
for $89 do you get continual updates of crossover? how does that licensing work?
I read the headline and thought “What are they thinking?! Linux 2.6 is out, why ship 2.5?”.
It’s good to see another release from these guys, even if I wouldn’t run it. That’s the beauty of open source, a distro for everyone and everything.
I mean, I know there was much hubaloo (ha!) about the lack of an update to COO (btw, the COO installer works fine in the buisness edition) but to pop out another quick release (ala 1.1) and miss out on even 1(!) of the 2 major Linux developments that directly influence Xandros (being KDE 3.2.x and Kernel 2.6.x just doesn’t add up to me… its kinda old and cold I think…
I’ll stick with my X2 Buisness edition with my self updated COO for now, until we get a real update with the kde and kernel I want
Every review I have seen of Xandros products marvels about how few security or other updates there are. Does anyone stop to ponder if this is a good thing? Major distros like Red Hat, Mandrake, Debian, and SUSE all have many updates. Has Xandros learned something the big boys have not… or do they not have enough man power or inclination to offer updates?
I am just guessing, but it seems Xandros is sticking to Debian “current” stable and only making a few exceptions (like Crossover, Opera, etc.) to make it a complete desktop solution regardless of whatever kernel or any other package for that matter is out.
Any big changes might only happen if Debian elevates sarge to current stable.
So according to the changelog Xandros updated two third-party apps: Mozilla and Crossover Office… and release this as a new OS!! is it a joke!?
I mean – an OS upgrade with no upgrades to the OS!
And they want existing customers to pay for it… not this one.
They have put out security updated based ONLY on what they find in Debian that effects what’s in Xandros. Being that not every problem with Debian effects Xandros you will not see a ton of security updates. But there have been a few since 2.0 came out.
Also KDE and the Kernel are supposed to be updated in the next full release. Basicly this is just an update of Crossover office. If you don’t need the update then you don’t need to go to the new version of Xandros.
And besides a little speed improvement I don’t see what on the desktop side people are really missing by not having the 2.6 kernel at this time. ???
The default Xandros install doesn’t include development tools, servers, etc. I.e., there’s less to fix. If users draw software and updates only from the offical Xandros repository, they’ll get the appropriate fixes. Xandros won’t fix software they don’t support.
