Sun Microsystems has finalized a plan to put more pressure on rivals by porting its entire JES (Java Enterprise System) software line to the HP-UX and Windows operating systems. Bits and pieces of JES – a package that includes an app server, directory server, clustering software and 11 other items – already run on Windows. Sun, however, has now vowed to have the whole enchilada running on Windows and HP-UX by January.
What ever happened to Write Once Run Everywhere? And why will it take until January before this is release? It’s Java, isn’t it?
WHAT AM I MISSING HERE???
So they admit they lost against IBM? Nobody takes HP seriously these days, and Windows users aren’t interested in Java, they want to run their .NET applications. Sorry Sun, no dice.
This move has the potential to bring a lot of competitors systems into the Sun fold. You will be able to run your whole IT infrastrature on one flavor of server middleware.
After this weeks opteron announcements this is showing why Sun is so strong in the systems software business. I will bet BEA, MS and HP aren’t laughing this off.
Sun clearly is using software as a weapon against the competition.
zzzz…
Schwartz comes into McNealy’s office, looking very excited. McNealy is on the phone talking about golf, so Schwartz waits for his turn. After 10 minutes McNealy hangs up and looks at him questioningly.
Schwartz to McNealy: Sir, I have another plan for world domination, Sir!
McNealy: Are we going to crush Microsoft?
Schwartz: Sir, yes Sir!
McNealy: Let’s hear it…
Schwartz: Sir, first we announce to the world that we have a plan for world domination, Sir!
McNealy: How?
Schwartz: Sir, through the usual channels: our press people, Sir!
McNealy: No, you idiot, how are we going to do this … world domination?
Schwartz: Sir, first we announce to the world that we have a plan for world domination, Sir!
McNealy: OK, I got that part, but what does that plan entail?
Schwartz: Entail, Sir?
McNealy: (sigh) What’s the plan?
Schwartz: Sir, we port JES to Windows and HP-UX, Sir!
McNealy: (starting to react violently) What the fu… (smiles) No, wait, that will make them worry, I mean, what could resist to the power of Java(tm)? Yes, I see… Jonathan?
Schwartz: Sir?
McNealy: Execution! Full speed ahead!
Schwartz: Sir, yes Sir! (runs out, still looking very excited)
McNealy: Jonathan?
Schwartz: (just puts his head through the door) Sir?
McNealy: We fired all our press people last week, didn’t we?
Schwartz: Sir, yes Sir!
McNealy: So you announce the plan, OK? I have that gol… err… hum… business appointment.
Schwartz: Sir, of course Sir! (head disappears)
I thought Sun was going to Open JES?
man I tell ya…..Frist they want there eggs over easy…then scrambled then all of a sudden they are fighting for the chickens right to live.

Some of the products in the JES stack are not pure Java (Directory Server, Web Server, partly Application and Portal Server) and therefore will require a bit of work porting to a different architecture and OS. Plus just proving that product works on platform X is not sufficient for an enterprise level product, Sun should make it supportable and more or less bullet-proof on the new platform.
Overall JES product stack has matured quite significantly and offers a really compeling product combination at rather unbeatable price. I wouldn’t be laughing if I was in MS/IBM/Bea shoes.
