SilverOS is a stable version of FreeBSD 4.x based on an early preview of the upcoming DragonFly BSD 1.0 release. SilverOS exists to be the convergence point of stablity and innovative design, drawing from successful research collaborations including IBM’s K42 Research Project. SilverOS is a commercially supported BSD system from a company that has a proven track record in innovative BSD design, development, and deployment. http://www.crescentanchor.com.
Unfortunately, the site gives few details on the system itself (other than the fact taht it’s a DragonFly derivitive), or about the included packages, installer, etc.
with a proven track record?
Proven track record, my ass.
The domain name for this company was established at the beginning of this year. They have no clients listed and they want to be everything to everyone, from clustering to embedded markets.
What a joke?
Guess what? The 1990s called and they want your dot-com propaganda back.

Looks like you didn’t read through the entire site before you started jumping to un-sound conclusions. I found a list of clients, some of them being very large companies.
http://crescentanchor.com/company/clients/
they listed clients , but didn’t give more precise information. Maybe they should say more?
Yeah,
I missed those initially and I apologize for that, although it would be good to know how Netscape is using an OS that did not exist until very recently.
It says they are “a company that has a proven track record in innovative BSD design, development, and deployment”. That doesn’t mean that “proven track record” was gained with this SilverOS product, but other “innovative BSD design, development, and deployment” services they have provided.
Sheesh.
BSD license sucks, eh? Why? Does it suck to be fully free?
“since AOL is using IE leaving netscape in the dead thats pretty strange”
untrue, they are reviving it building on mozilla code (or something like that)
We already know it’s a great server OS, but I’d like to see it BSD in Hollywood.
The Matrix’s CGI, the movie, was done in FreeBSD. You can search for ‘the matrix freebsd’ in google.com and you should find few first links about it. I think, they have like over 20 or 30 machines that are running FreeBSD as the Render Farm.
If you don’t like it, don’t use it. I think that’s simple enough. Why do people have trouble understanding this?
BSD is already used in the movie industry (VOD servers, satellite CDN edge caching, etc.)

does that mean nobody should complain about anything they dont like?. what kind of logic is that.?

Some places are more appropriate than others.
You’re right. FreeBSD was used in the Matrix. I was aware of that and I probably should have mentioned it in my original post.
Without even googling for it, I believe it was Manix (or something like that – too lazy to look it up) studios that did it, right?
All I know is that they did some damn good work! The original Matrix is still my favorite.
It does for you. If i were fully free, you would be DEAD because i’d have used my freedom to blow your brains out.
Nice. So this all this bickering over software is SO important to you that you’d kill somebody over it. Please grow up before you hurt yourself. This site does not need those kind of comments.

Indeed.
How does it suck? I can still get the Dragonfly sources.
And now we have a product that might not have existed with the ridiculous GPL. Is the Apple community worse off because of OSX? I think not.
Two most popular Open Source programs are NOT gpl.(Mozilla and Apache)
Hopefully one day the fsf will be free of the myth that software grows on trees and only services or modifications are worth selling.
SilverOS? Commercial? So I don’t have that much freedom with my OS? This I don’t like. I’ve been working on a new installer for FreeBSD/HawkinsOS recently…which has been delayed….
I don’t see why I should buy this OS when I could buy Solaris or just use FreeBSD,etc.

Uh, good for you?

Much like FreeBSD’s own new installer. Get with the times and port DragonFly’s new installer. It works, and it’s extensible.

Once again, good for you. Out with the new and in with the old?
