This ReactOS release features the new LiveCD image, improved and more stable kernel and win32k kernel graphics subsystem, lots of networking foundation work, improved setup and better bundled explorer, command shell and drivers. Also included is newly ported user DLL code from WINE.
A new great release! keep it up
Heh, sweet. Pretty soon this might actually be as usable as it is cool!
maybe when its more mature I can run all my windows programs on a more stable OS….(dont start about linux and wine or something..)
Do not expect it to be more stable than Windows already is. If your (Windows) system is instable, this is most likely either because your hardware is crappy or because of a device driver for some 3rd party device is going wild.
In the latter case, this driver will be buggy with ReactOS also so it will crash ReactOS just like Windows 🙁
Beside of that, ReactOS is surely cool.
“[…] win32k kernel graphics subsystem”
They are serious about cloning. Rethinking Microsoft’s bad design decisions doesn’t seem to be part of the plan.
One of the goals is to be able to use existing (video) drivers, which will link against the kernel. It is impossible to achieve the binary compatibility for drivers goal with a usermode graphics subsys.
I checked it out. It still needs a lot of work. The whole GUI desktop flickers and I couldn’t access the contents on any drive except my CD. Like it had the drive letters, C, D, etc in “My Computer” but when you double click on C:, just a blank explorer appears with no files. I think the screen does not refresh and the “Refresh” menu shurtcut does not seem to work. However, looks promising. Not in a usable condition at the moment (my personal opinion) but surely looks very promising. Fonts are bad at this stage.
