Slackware 10 is released. Highlights of the 10.0 release include GCC 3.3.4 (with GCC 3.4.0 as an alternate in /testing), the Linux 2.4.26 kernel (with Linux 2.6.7 as an alternate choice in /testing), X11R6.7.0 from X.Org, Mozilla 1.7, GNOME 2.6.1+, and KDE 3.2.3. Read the announcement and the download information at Slackware’s site.
one useless slackware rocks the world post. Too bad it doesn’t run on Macs
Let’s make that two Big up to Mr. Volkerding and everyone else who made yet another great release possible.
Simply the best. Great job!
I gotta try this out on my low end laptop (233mhz/96mb RAM). It runs 9.1 well, so this version shouldn’t be a problem either.
time to upgrade my installation.
Yea! Nice to see Slackware is celebrating its 10th release (though it cheated a bit from 4 to 7 ) In the changelog, Pat says there’s 2000 lines of changes since 9.1.
I’ve been using RC2 for a few days now. I only have to update CVS. I’m running it on kernel 2.6.7 and its runs much better!
Keep going Pat you’re doing a great job!
You know how excited I am
Still no Slack ISO’s for 10. Seems only the md5sum files made it unto some.
When is Slackware going to have one?
Is anyone making on based on Slackware?
It’s called Slax, it exists.
Try Slax: http://slax.linux-live.org/ (its Slackware based though not on 10.0).
I’ve tried it. It works great and it can fit on a mini-CDR or CDRW
I think I will get it after a week when the dust settles down.

What about Slax? I test drove Slax the other day and I was MUCHO impressed. I was so impressed that I decided that I am going to change my system over from Fedora 2 to Slackware 10. This would be my first venture into Slackware. Judging by what I have read on the net, I won’t be disappointed.
They have an awesome site. I guess I’m downloading it now.
Is it possible to get just the first CD & download Gnome/KDE later?
Time to tortue my dialup by downloading this 🙂
go slack go!
Gonna have my Inquisitor badge revoked… can’t even spell ‘torture’ correctly!
s it possible to get just the first CD & download Gnome/KDE later?
Yes, it shouldn’t be a problem. 9.1 worked that way. I only every downloaded the first CD, and then installed dropline.
And…
Yay! Slackware 10 is released! Yay! Happy me! </fanboy level=”10″>
Is it possible to get just the first CD & download Gnome/KDE later?
You can use swaret to install any other package you need.
Great news, thanks Mr. Volkerding and please keep your excellent job! This is my preferred server distro… and now I’ve just discovered SLAX, it seems superb!
Ok, with this release, I got a new TODO list now:
– Download the ISOs;
– Install Slackware 10.0;
– Hard task: configure X.org, DRI, sound, CD and floppy access…;
– Install fam :-);
– Find and install a gnome-vfs package for Gnome 2.6 with fam support compiled in (where can I find one?);
– Install some apps: Evolution, Firefox, Anjuta, Dia, Tux Racer…;
– Start playing !!!!
I have been using Slackware since 9.1 came out and it has been the best Linux expierience I have ever had so I decided to pay for this release. I can’t wait until my CDs come…
Please, support this project by ordering your CD copy from http://store.slackware.com/
…just a Slackware fan since my early days, thanks Patrick.
Slackware is one distro I havn’t used. I have used a lot of distros over the years and settled on a couple. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on it for me with respect to how it compares to the following with regards to ease of manageabilty;
RedHat as a server or desktop
Debian as a server or desktop
I have close to no Slackware experience, but as I understand it: it’s like Debian and unlike RedHat in that there are no fancy config tools included: just you and your text editor, basically. It’s like RedHat and unlike Debian, Fedora and Gentoo in that releases are in discrete chunks and determined by technology, rather than continuous or determined by politics (i.e. no apt-get, no zealotry).
But I would welcome correction if I’m wrong.
Hi
Slackware is a simple distro in the sense that they avoid making changing in the packages and just try to provide upstream versions as much as possible
no extras, no frills and a do it yourself attitude. not for everyone but where it applies it is very useful with a very loyal fan base who dont promote it like hell and make you frown over it.
Good conventional stuff basically
Yes there is a Slackware Distro and 2 LiveCD’s , one of the Live cds is the universally known, SLAX, and the other Distro thats a full distro and also have a live cd much like the Suse LiveCD, is called VectorLinux, its amazing fast even on _VERY_
LOW end PC’s . with that said: http://www.vectorlinux.com
I think the biggest reasons that people like slackware is because it has a BSD style init. It’s the only Linux distro that I know of that uses it. The advantage of a BSD style init, for me is that it is easier to figure out.
Slackware is also not going to get in your way. It’s you and the tools you need.
Another nice thing about Slackware (and *BSD, too) is the way config files are documented so that you don’t need a gui to make changes. Config files will plainly say, “Don’t edit this file, use **** instead” or “Remove this comment if you need **** “.
Personally, I don’t use Slackware anymore. For server duties, I am using FreeBSD. It has all of the advantages of Slackware plus the ports and packages. For the desktop, I want something easy like Xandros or Mandrake. I don’t want to have to fuss with Slackware to set up all of my hardware and network.
Slackware is great at what it does if it’s what you need. I have alot of respect for it.
Darren
Thanks for mentioning swaret. Didn’t knew something like this excisted for slackware, this was one of the reasons I wend over to Gentoo. Luckily I still have one slackware box left to test this on….
For others:

Thanks, that is a great information. I also use FreeBSD and if it has some similarities it might be worth a look. I like FreeBSD for server use, but my boss really wants us to be using Linux instead. If it is somewhat similar to manage it may find it’s way into our datacenter, I will check it out.
…is our savior. May God bless Pat Volkerding and may he live long and prosper. Woohoo!!!!!!!!
Seems fast. It recognized my soundcard and played a sound during bootup. But it had some difficulty trying to setup my videocard or monitor. I`m with a virtual framebuffer. Anyway, I need to install an ATI driver to setup for dualhead monitors. The initial bootup screen was pretty good, btw. Gotta try to fix the video. Thanks and see you.
Just
mv /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config-default
and then
mv /etc/X11/XF86Config-fbdev /etc/X11/XF86Config
Video ok. Fast environment to have some fun. Gonna like it.
You are welcome.
Why would s/he insist on Linux?? I like Linux and FreeBSD. But, if FreeBSD is getting the job done, why insist on changing over to Linux?
FreeBSD’s license offers greater freedom. You can even use BSD code in close source applications, AFAIK.
In my house, it’s freeBSD on the server and Mandrake and Xandros Linux (and XP) on the desktop. I would think that would be a decent offering for businesses, as well.
need it, want it, gonna have it!
Ahem. as of slackware 10.0
it’s: /etc/X11/xorg.conf
not: /etc/X11/XF86Config
…a pre-compiled kernel for SMP machines this time around? He hasn’t in the past, at least not for several distros. (I am lazy and can’t be bothered with compiling my own SMP-enabled kernel, OK?)
Mike
Yeah, finally after a long waiting phase it’s here, the best distro out there on this planet!!
My Slackware-8.1 Router(Internet, Mail, NFS, Fileshare…)-PC is like my 1st “baby”
It has an uptime 500+ days (around 520days) without a single crash or reboot!
My Slackware-9.1 partition is like my 2nd “baby” for me. Everything works like a charm (kernel 2.6, multimediatools like audacity, mplayer, xine, vcdtools, ffmpeg, dvb, vdr or isdn-capi, sane…)
Why is Slackware the best? Because it’s one of the last nearly bugfree Linux distribution!
Now, I make a 3rd & 4rd baby with the expirience of my 1st two babys:
a new Router and Workstation with 10.0 comes soon 😉
Slackware OS-X *yiiiipiiieee*
downloading via bittorrent…
Is it just me or should a comment like this always include a link to said BT unless it is something illegal (eg Windows source code); seems like standard netiquette. I think that is just a small thing to help newbs get into it and make he day easier for anyone else.
This is not meant as a flmae but rather as constructive criticism. Because someone post a similar torrent did I ever get around to trying OpenBSD.
> Ahem. as of slackware 10.0
>
> it’s: /etc/X11/xorg.conf

It’s /etc/xorg.conf, even
Thanks, but I was referring to the Slax distro that I just tried.
Next weekend I hope to give Slack 10 a shot, though.
BTW, I hope I’m too newbie to use swaret, but after a few searches I found Mozilla 1.4 (old) and I couldn’t find Firefox, which made me think if it really compares with the Debian repositories.
If you had to compare the swaret repositories with the debian repositories, what would you say?
Yep,me is a happy camper now!
I used the 9.1 and I’m glad to use it in my home and in my job.I learned a lot with 9.1.There are a DVD iso from 10.0 ?
Long life to slackware
Downloading it through bittorrent.
I’m looking to see kde 3.2.3 and the new gnome at work
why must you settle on ftp?
1. Does anyone know if there is a pdf or postscript version of the book “Slackware Linux Essentials” ? I can’t find it in local libraries and don’t want to read it on the monitor (already wearing prescription glasses). It would be better to have a printable version.
2. The system requirements list a 386 at minimum. Is this a typo or does such a low end processor really perform well with the 2.4.x or 2.6.x kernels ?
Unfortunately Slack does not support 386 anymore. The lowest CPU is now 486 (and Pentium is the lowest if one wants to use Java).
http://www.slackware.com/torrents/index.html
The torrents are there. They are moving sort of slow for me actually.
I’ll be buying the CD set though because slackware is the best.
I have to say slackware is my favorite distro, not trouble free though.
Is anyone else having trouble with the torrents?
The torrents do seem to be pretty slow. I’m only getting about 10-15kB/s on my T-1 line
http://www.filemirros.com -> slackware-10.0-install-d1.iso, slackware-10.0-install-d2.iso
it took me 8~ hours to download one .ISO :S
I found one place that seems to have them and I’m grabbing them now. I can’t guarantee that these just aren’t a very recent “current”, which is the same thing, rather than a “real” final version, but here you go.
ftp://ftp.waw.krakow.pl/linux/iso/slackware-10.0-iso/
Just be kind to the throughput. Also, they’re letting you have two simultaneous downloads at once (and no more than that).
Eugenia,
I read your previous review of Slackware a couple of months back and that prompted me to try out Slackware. Now its my Linux distro of choice. And right now, I’m waiting for your review of Slackware 10. Hope we dont have to wait too long 🙂
Many thanks to the maintainers of slackware! If it wasn’t for slackware, I would still be using freebsd as my primary os. Gotta love the KISS philosophy.
Indeed it is. I always end up coming back to Slackware, with my recent excursion into fedora and previous excursions into debian and so on. Slackware is always where i come back to because it just works and i have yet to find any linux distro to match it in simplicity and reliability.
Good job patrick and the rest of the Slackware team.
“Why would s/he insist on Linux?? I like Linux and FreeBSD. But, if FreeBSD is getting the job done, why insist on changing over to Linux?”
Marketing and hype I suspect, the good thing is if I present a strong case, 90% of the time I get my way.
Don’t be so lousy, go to the slackware store & buy a copy.
It’s cheaper than printing a pdf yourself.
http://store.slackware.com/cgi-bin/store
I’ve read on an old newsgroup email that AMD64 support may be coming soon. Does anyone have better knowledge on this than unfounded gossip?
I’ve just installed Slack X… Its getting better and better…
screenshots please! ..i’m at 92% of disk1 now
My screenshot of Slackware 10.0RC1 can be found at http://lena.uia.ac.be/~stijn/var/screenshot-20040621.png. Unfortunately, this isn’t the default look, but can easily be obtained by configuring KDE and installing nice themes
Now thats pretty! …:D
