Hey.. These days the move to 64 is really hot!
Seems like it moves extremely fast!
Maybe I should invest in one someday….
I yearn the day intel releases 64 — it will form a big price war to push prices down!
AFAIK they are first releasing it as a special version of Xeons… but I IIRC they say there is no place for 64 bits on the user desktop.
what does this mean? anyone? I did search I swear…
Fails To Build From Source.
s/AMD x86_64/amd64/ or s/AMD x86_64/AMD64/ according to the recent vote on debian-amd64, please.
I’m a first time Debian user, and I just installed Sarge. Where do I get an APT repository for the latest software like Kernel 2.6, Gnome 2.6, Samba 3.0, etc? Please advise.
In your “/etc/apt/sources.list” You should have apt sources like
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main non-free contrib
You would or stable if your using sarge… Sarge is normally the standard install but, If you want the laitist software SID “unstable” is mor suited for you. You would then go “apt-get update” , then if you changed to Undtable you would go “apt-get dist-upgrade” to install the kernel sources you would go “apt-get install kernel-source-2.6.6 gome samba” If you have any more problems http://www.google.com/linux is a good source.. Also I would suggest looking at this debian reference card.. I wish I had it when I first installed.

Ok back on topic. I am glad they are moving to a 64 bit system

You can’t have looked very hard. Samba 3 (http://packages.debian.org/testing/net/samba) and the 2.6 kernel (http://packages.debian.org/testing/source/kernel-image-2.6.5-i386) are already in Testing.
Gnome 2.6 looks set to go into Testing (http://packages.qa.debian.org/m/meta-gnome2.html) barring a release-critical bug being discovered in the next 4 days.
Personally, I suggest you just sit tight and wait. However, if you’re ultra-impatient you can either do as Brian Hursey recommends and undertake a wholesale dist-upgrade to Unstable, or else use apt-pinning (http://jaqque.sbih.org/kplug/apt-pinning.html) to pull down just the specific packages you’re after. Either way, if you’re putting Unstable packages on your system you’ll want to be making use of apt-listbugs (http://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/apt-listbugs) which will give you a warning if you’re about to install a package with release-critical bugs filed against it, thus preventing you from b0rking your system.
How long before we see a x86_64 Xandros distro? I am also interested in a Libranet for 64 bit as well.
Why are you posing the question here? Email Xandros, email Libranet, and ask *them*.
just curios as to when i will be able to grab the ISO ?
Snake
“just curios as to when i will be able to grab the ISO ?”
Right now. 🙂 Installation is covered in the HOWTO:
