Another video of SkyOS 5.0 beta 6 has been released. Due to popular demand, this one is a bit higher quality, and also smaller in size (25MB). A lower-quality version of the same video is also available, weighing in at 8MB. The video shows SkyOS being loaded from Grub, booting up, and being put through general use. It is roughly 6 minutes long.
When Sky was free and a novelty it was kind of cool but now the weekly updates are annoying.
Give us a ‘real update’ when it can handle alot of hardware or has useful apps.
Somebody will report you to osnews and the post will be deleted. they have to post every beta release because sky os is cool and all that.
its the project of a single guy who coded the entire os. of course he took grub gnu tools openbefs filesystems linux kernel drivers and stuff buts legal and standing on the shoulders of giants. no problem
You are completely right! All three of these posts will be deleted. I am getting so sick of all of the SkyOS reporting. I wonder if SkyOS and osnews.com have some kind of alliance going on?
With all the talk about Linux ready or not for the desktop PC, with all the software built for Linux… One would think that SkyOS does not have any chance of living very long with the big boys out there.
Linux is a huge OS, it’s being talked about by everyone but yet, it’s making very slow progress on ordinary people desktop PC. And you don’t even have to pay to use most Linux distro…
So… SkyOS 5.0, when it’s out, with limited hardware support, not as many applications, 30$ (or free limited liveCD), i’m afraid that only fans of Robert’s work will buy it. Still, I wish that this OS continu to grow and get better.
We would sure like to know about other operating systems too but whats the point in posting every beta release
HAHA!
This news was submitted because a lot of people had a problem with both the quality and the size of the last video that was released. This video is about 1/3rd as big, and at least a little better quality.
If you aren’t interested, feel free to just not read the news item, let alone comment about it.
“If you aren’t interested, feel free to just not read the news item, let alone comment about it.”
the point is that there is too much of beta release announcement news about skyos only in osnews. we can hear about important milestones and achievements and other alternative os and hobby stuff too. there is a whole lot of stuff that doesnt get any press at all.
thats not trolling at all.
It’s a valid opinion that this isn’t the most newsworthy tidbit in the world. However, we are “OS News” and there really aren’t that many active alternative OSes out there any more. We’re really the only web site in the world that’s going to report on them, so we do. And as Kelly noted, some people complained about the other video. If you don’t care about SkyOS or other small OSes, fine. And I promise I will try to resist posting pictures of the SkyOS guy’s dog and an announcement that SkyOS now supports purple background colors for its desktop. 🙂
How much stuff is heard about Linux? Windows? Mac? BSD? I would guess that SkyOS gets mentioned only a fraction of the amount that those systems do.
Maybe those other alternative os and hobby things aren’t mentioned because they don’t bother to send news updates to OSNews. Either way, this is “OS”News.com It is a website to deliver news about OS’s. This is news about an OS.
The real point is, a SkyOS news update is only one little update on a page with 20 other updates. If you really don’t care at all about SkyOS, how hard is it for you to just scroll your mouse wheel 1-2 times so it is off of your screen?
“How much stuff is heard about Linux? Windows? Mac? BSD? I would guess that SkyOS gets mentioned only a fraction of the amount that those systems do. ”
relatively speaking considering the number of users i would say that skyos gets a large amount of postings here
linux and bsd have a good amount of variations so each of the invidual distros actually get very little amount of postings
Ms does a lot of press releases about how cool longhorn in 2007/8 will be and of course there is .net

Perhaps you should also complain about the number of Linux news items?
Of course that would be silly. There is a lot of Linux news, and it is good that it is posted. But SkyOS is starting to gain some real steam, starting to get bigger. The last time news was posted was 6 days ago. Is one news post every week or so that big of a deal?
If it is that big of a deal, you should be complaining about the number of Linux posts. Otherwise, I don’t think you should complain that SkyOS news gets posted once a week.

”
why are you concentrating on linux. are you aware of the relative number of users and interested people?
of course a setting to just see what news i want to would be very nice.
Well, since I said it was good that all the Linux news was posted, I think it should be safe to say that I have nothing against Linux.
I picked Linux’s news postings because they are the most prevalent. You could easily say the same about Windows, and probably (though not to such an extent) Mac, which I did in one of my earlier posts (“How much stuff is heard about Linux? Windows? Mac? BSD?”)
Once again, why are you criticizing news being posted on a news site? You can easily ignore it. SkyOS news isn’t being posted every other news item, there is about one post a week. So you don’t care about SkyOS, fine. Other people do. Are you going to march into every single thread of every news item posted now and declare that you’re tired of hearing about that item, and that you don’t want as many news postings about it?
SkyOS isn’t the little OS it was 3 years ago. It has grown by leaps and bounds. As such, there is bound to be more news postings about it on OSNews.com, the biggest OS reporting site on the Internet.

ok sky os was there 3 years ago. didnt know that. “Once again, why are you criticizing news being posted on a news site? You can easily ignore it. why are so offensive about this. did i say anything about it on any other thread. guys i paid for this os once.
if you are involved not any more
bye
I actually watched the video.
It looks quite cool actually. I’d love to support the project, without dealing with installing it with limited hardware support. It looks pretty cool. I think he ought to port his DE to Linux .
I must wonder if he uses X or if he wrote his own graphics server. I’m gonna guess he just used X. Anyone know?
Robert (creator of SkyOS) wrote his own graphics server. It is called “SkyGI”.
Hardware support is getting there. The other day I was using an Audigy sound card, which worked very well. I had to remove it and give it back to my brother to use. SkyOS detected it as missing, and sound would not work. I was able to secure an Ensoniq sound card, and I plugged it in. SkyOS picked it up as a new card (Ensoniq), and with no tweaking or installing on my part, sound was back again, ready to go.
That is OS as in Operating System. News as in news :B
Get over it people SkyOS is an operating system. I am glad that Kelly posted about the new videos. Or else I wouldn’t have known about it.
I come to OSNEWS to be updated about new things in the OS world.
Why is that so hard to understand.
“Get over it people SkyOS is an operating system. I am glad that Kelly posted about the new videos. Or else I wouldn’t have known about it.

”
are you saying osnews posts only operating system news. look again and then talk
I too paid for a CD. I don’t mind shelling out a few now and then to support “good OS causes”. I have also bought Linux and BSD CDs.
SkyOS wouldn’t install on my machines, but still, it is good to see a decent, alternative OS coming along. I hope he can crank out better hardware support so more people can make use of it.
Mike
Weezer….acoustic. Good stuff.
SkyOS looks like a great project…..Operating System. I may have to shell out some greenbacks to help support the continued development of this environment.
Competition is good. Period.
What license is used for SkyOS? I couldn’t easily find the information on the main website.
“Weezer….acoustic. Good stuff.”
Thanks. I recorded it early last year. I’ve loved Weezer since the Blue Album. =)
Nice Video.
Unfortunaely it does not show recently announced features such as multiple sound streams,…
Btw, what music are you playing in the background ? sounds nice
>Linux is a huge OS, it’s being talked about by everyone but yet, it’s making very slow progress on ordinary people desktop PC. And you don’t even have to pay to use most Linux distro…
When it’s out it will take SkyOS months to have the ordinary user base Linux took in years… Because Linux has never been meant for ordinary users. SkyOS is beeing written for ordinary users.
Leo.
“Btw, what music are you playing in the background ? sounds nice “
Weezer – Say it ain’t So, as recorded by me and my guitar. =)
I know I didn’t show off everything that needed to be seen. I was somewhat pressed for time when making this. In the future, I will use a better camera, with better lighting, in a better location, with a computer that has more than 4GB of space to dump the footage to.
1. Thanks for posting this news.
2. I hope thaty Live CD will be available soon. I want to check if this OS will boot my Dell Dimension 8300…
I like to view videos showing the capabilities of OSes. They’re much more meaningful than screenshots.
But on this video I could hardly see anything. Doesn’t SkyOS have the possibility to capture the screen directly? I not, it would be better to capture the screen via VMware or VirtualPC instead of trying to film a CRT monitor.
I not, it would be better to capture the screen via VMware or VirtualPC instead of trying to film a CRT monitor.
But running it through VMware would seriously decrease the responsiveness and speed of the OS.
Not even trying to troll… (but it’s a fact that it mght sound like I do, but at least read the ending)
Personaly I always find this SkyOS thread amusing. And my opinion stands. One alternative is enough (in my case it isn’t SkyOS, not even by a long shot).
Get over it people SkyOS is an operating system. I am glad that Kelly posted about the new videos. Or else I wouldn’t have known about it.
Maybe you should complain to skyos.org. Every decent site has RSS feeds for that purpose. In this case you can only relate to external News to get informed about the topic. Don’t you think it sounds a bit wrong?
I wandered a bit over skyos.org and found no RSS link. Maybe they should rearrange site a little bit, I couldn’t even find News link? Ok, there’s Media, but I was really dissapointed with what I saw.
Every decent site provides either blog or news (even if it is a simple blog used for that) and providing RSS feed support with it.
Correction, I found News, the only trouble is that if I click anywhere else there’s no direct link on site. Either you have to manualy delete everything in address except skyos.org or pressing back like a fool (or make a bookmark, but SkyOS just doesn’t interest me so I won’t do that, I’m really conservative about space, hell I only have 3.5TB od hard disks on my company servers).
I think that’s the entire problem: Robert completely focusses on the OS; and not something as insignificant as having a lean and mean website. That’s something to worry about when you deliver a product– I’ve seen Linux distro;s which seem to put more effort into their website than into the distro itself, and not just Linux distros, al sorts of products.
It’s the product that matters, not if they have damn RSS feed…
Uhm– just click the SkyOS logo on the page.
That’s all it takes.
Actually my name is Thomas but thom is shorter, so I use it as UID in GNU/Linux and some news sites .
Back to the topic. It’s true that SkyOS wouldn’t as responsive in VMware or VirtualPC but at least one would be able to see anything.
“Correction, I found News, the only trouble is that if I click anywhere else there’s no direct link on site. Either you have to manualy delete everything in address except skyos.org or pressing back like a fool.”
As was stated already, you just have to click the logo at the top to go back to the news index.
“I think that’s the entire problem: Robert completely focusses on the OS; and not something as insignificant as having a lean and mean website.”
I wish I could comment more on this, I really do. Lets just say….its going to be a surprise. At any rate, its good that Robert concentrates on the OS so much, because that is where his attention is needed. That is the entire reason people like me are now working with him, so that his attention can stay on the OS, but other attention can be put into other places.
“It’s true that SkyOS wouldn’t as responsive in VMware or VirtualPC but at least one would be able to see anything.”
Trying to screen-capture while VMWare is running brings my computer to its knees. Even on a very high-end computer (which we don’t have available), it is still less than real-time.
Eventually, closer to when we get ready to release, we will introduce some higher-quality media previews. These are basically just little teasers for everyone. I don’t like how many companies just leave their audience in the dark about what is going on in development. Even just posting technical updates once a month isn’t good. I think it means so much more to be able to see progress visually, as well as be able to read about its technical progress. That’s why you generally get new screenshots every 1-2 weeks.
That should say “click” back. I need an edit button. Its altogether too early for me. =P
Is it the fact the SkyOS isn’t opensource that makes people this negative about it?
Even if you like Linux or whatever SkyOS is a good thing, because closed source or not, commercial or not it will bring more comptetition and more innovation into the scene.
I for one hope that this dark ages of MS ruling the world will soon be over and we’ll be back to the 80’s and early 90’s when there was a choice. All of these projects will in one way or the other help us to get there.
I wish there was more news about OBOS here, but they have been so quiet lately so there’s not a lot to post here.
Anyway, I much rather have 10 new videos of SkyOS in action than one analyst giving us some vauge uninformed guess about where MS is heading next.
The point I was trying to make is that I come to OSNEWS to get news. That is all.
BTW I don’t like the RSS programs, they seem bloated for what they do.
I agree.
“:Stop being a little bitch…You are wasting everybody’s time with your whining.
”
calling others bitches insultes females in general as well as it is faithless name calling. you are the troll now. guess you are a sky os fan?
I am curious about both SkyOS and Syllable. I have been trying to follow the progress of both. Both seem to have similar feature sets, although I think Syllable is multi-user and SkyOS is not. Has anyone had time to actually do an in-depth comparison of the two (I’m ignoring the licensing differences ATM)? I am also curious how easy it is for apps to be ported to each OS, since without apps an OS is not very useful.
Porting apps from which OS exactly? GTK apps would be easier to port to SkyOS, and BeOS apps would be easier to port to Syllable. The difference is that the GTK apps would still be using GTK while the Syllable apps would be native.
And I know that the Syllable and the BeOS API are different, but they are similar enough to make porting fairly easy.
“calling others bitches insultes females in general as well as it is faithless name calling. you are the troll now. guess you are a sky os fan?”
i know this is off topic but calling someone a bitch insults females? a bitch is the official accepted term for a female Domestic Dog, so if you can draw offence to women from that, could you pleae share how you got to that conclusion?
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Encourage-Women-Linux-HOWTO/x168.html#AEN179
I have never used SkyOS, so you can hardly call me a SkyOS fan. However, the progression of SkyOS is interesting to me, and I would like to stay informed of it. The SkyOS developer(s) have done a fantastic job and deserve to be commended, not insulted by ignorant trolls.

hmm i read that and it is interesting, but really sexism in my eyes doesnt exist, both men and women are different, women are superior to men in alot of areas, and men are superior to women in others, were not equal as in can do the same things but equal in that what we do is equally important.
just my thoughts lol (off-topic again lol)
@Thom
It’s the product that matters
Definitely agree. I only suggested that using blog engine would make it simpler for his users and him. Bloggers have auto-rss update.
Btw. Although project is not in my interest. Other News sites relly mostly on RSS feeds (correct me if I’m wrong, but now they feed news sites manualy). I think that author would have more time for coding that way. And maybe even more news sites would track this news.
It’s not all about the users, although mostly is.
If you think from different perspective. Product might matter even more this way.
@John
I thought same about RSS. But then I found
linux
http://liferea.sourceforge.net/
windows (I don’t use this, but author of liferea tryes to get the same result, if that’s true this one rocks, and screenshots have same layout and controls)
http://www.feedreader.com/
Both are nothing but plain and simple FeedReaders. And they both rock. After that my love for RSS has only grown
Herr .. humm … so what’s the point in having a *OS* *NEWS* website if it’s not the place to get OS news, without people telling us to get a RSS feed instead of reading the news on this site ?
On your side, you know, any decent user knows how to pass over a news that doesn’t interest them.
Am I alone NOT being forced to read all the news and be able to read only the ones that interest me ? And NOT being forced to piss people off by posting messages on “how I hate this topic” ?
On your side, you know, any decent user knows how to pass over a news that doesn’t interest them.
????
Can you show me where did I say that. I don’t remember. Read when and what is the reason I posted my comment. Personally I don’t give a f*** about SkyOS (I always say that in clear). But that’s no reason to stop others to like it. Sooo, I don’t give a f*** wheter article was posted or not (Personally I would miss them). Only SkyOS threads always amuse me just for some reason. Might be that one people bitchin’ OUT and one IN is the reason.
To ease your pain:
When John Blink said that OSNews is his *only* source for SkyOS. Now read the essence of second post, without adventurous searching for troll.
Thanks for the RSS reader links.
That the SkyOS community might want to market it out to the movie or television industry. It looks darn slick in action, and yet rather unlike (if only superficially) anything else in the mainstream, which for those industries equates with “futuristic”.
And for SkyOS, it’d be free publicity.
