“OpenGL and DirectX represent a schism in the graphics world, one that has hampered development at times, and fostered it at others. There are new developments coming, and the schism appears to be closing somewhat.” Read the rest of the report at Tom’s Hardware.
“The great hope was to create a universal API that worked within and without Microsoft, that would enable graphics development to advance within a common framework.”
LOL .. yeah, like that was ever going to happen If it meant an open standard that could run outside of the Windows platform, who in their right mind thought that MS was going to let THAT happen?
Anyway, I read in the article that companies brought forth technology to the OpenGL ARB, but were too concerned about protecting their IP, which is just another example of how IP kills innovation, even though MS says Linux kills innovation
SGI broke the most important rule in the computer business. Anyone who partners/ works with/gets bought by Microsoft becomes road kill in short order. Thankfully, OpenGL is an open standard now. This will keep it well ahead of DirectX.
no, because games are built for windows, and directx is superior when running on windows.
Games are one thing
serious application are another.
and OpenGL is just great.
and win32 isn’t the world and must not be the world
