Knoppix, the most popular LiveCD linux distribution (a complete linux distribution that boots off a CD-Rom) version 3.4 is out. New features include Kernel 2.6 (default is still 2.4), KDE 3.2.2, OpenOffice.org 1.1.1 and Gimp 2.0. Complete changelog, torrent.
Only another 157hrs left. . I hope it picks up
still no DVD.. i’m not giving up on this one, WHERE’S THE DVD ISO FOR ALL OF US DVD PEOPLE ???
There was a DVD copy of knoppix v3.3. They were handing them out in Linux-Tag. Try googling, might get lucky.
arg.
Just this weekend one of the directories on a ReiserFS partition on my Mandrake 9.1 installation was corrupted during a crash. Mandrake wouldn’t boot because it detected a “bad block” during boot up and wouldn’t go any further. Couldn’t boot into Failsafe either. Tried re-installing mandrake without wiping out /home, still no luck. So I downloaded and burned a Knoppix CD, popped it in and hoped for the best. It booted into KDE with all of my partitions listed as icons on the desktop. I was able to access the partition that went bad and recover almost all of my files. I typed smb://(netbios name) of my Win XP box into konqueror and got into my shares no problem and I was able to drag and drop all of the files I needed to recover onto the other PC’s drive. Without Knoppix I would have been dead because I was lazy and hadn’t done a backup in a while.
Knoppix is definitely the ultimate rescue disk, everyone should have a copy.
I found only an old PPC CD: does they still build also a Mac version?
I am only getting about 14-17kb/s sometimes from only about 4 people. That sucks.
They pulled latex and KOffice for disk space but keep kdevelop? They should pull kdevelop and add more networking, security, and recovery tools.
Knoppix is also great for folks just getting into linux… No commitment, run it on top of your regular os, let it save a swap file, and save make yourself a persistent desktop. Or travel from computer to computer retaining the exact same setup… Wonderful! I dreamed about that schema YEARS ago, and it’s amazing to have a system that works!
[Maybe it’s just my crappy DSL upload speed, but I have never been pleased with the multiple-nights-running downloads from torrents… sigh…]
Can’t understand why they chosen OpenOffice.Org over kOffice.
Sure… it’s better, but still, it’s a pain to load when running from a CD.
– live-installer by Fabian Franz
this feature is long overdue. how good is the live installer?
Finally, I took the time to re-write my fli4l-router floppies with new port-forwardings to get a decent d/l with torrent — it was always like 4-5 KB, now it is +70. I was forced, because none of the linked FTPs is updated yet.
bastards. i just downloaded the previous version last night ..
I have been waiting since cebit when klaus orgninially said it should be released. yea they chopped koffice, and latex, but they needed 65mb off the cd.
if you get bored check out the post in knoppic forums the one topic about what to chop got seen some 60,000 times and had 20 pages of replies.
I’ve had a Knoppix 3.4 CD with 2.6 kernel for a while. It was actually the only Knoppix I got to work with my wireless network without manual intervention.
Must heve been a pre-release or something? It came with a magazine, so it could also be that they released it with magazines earlier for promotional purposes?
Did this disc have KDE 3.2.x ? If not, it is not exactly the same.
Guess what? I am writing this from a running Knoppix. Acutally I used the included NX Client from http://www.nomachine.com/ to access a public NX server in Germany and open a remote desktop here. It works flawlessly and fast, with hardly any delay or latency, despite my ISDN-only internet connection from work.
This is really great. I just need to carry the Knoppix with me, and I get access to my own desktop, my own data, my own applications on my machine at home (it uses dyndns).
NX allows me to start truely ubiquitous and global computing — whereever, whenever I roam. (OK, OK, — is still need access to an internet-connected machine to boot the Knoppix…) 🙂
Kudos to Klaus Knopper who always discovers the coolest stuff and makes it work from CD.

I have read that the hd installer script is missing from this release – is this true?
If not, is it possible to install knoppix (as in previous releases) but with the 2.6 kernel?
C’T 4/2004 had Knoppix 3.4 already, but that was a pre-release indeed as it only has KDE 3.2.0. In each case not 3.2.2 as it wan’t out yet halfway February.
The title is “Knoppix 3.4 c’t-Edition”.
Iam wondring if i can do an hd install and upgrade it to debian sid. the problem that i have found before is that debian use some other startup rutine!
how it it now then?
John, seen Daan’s post, as that is the edition I have. Actually used it to bootstrap Gentoo, as the Gentoo live cd refused to work with my wireless networkcard. And I needed Kernel 2.6 to easily set my system up with 2.6 kernel headers.
I always carry Knoppix with me regardless of my preference for my desktop. Numerous times I used it just to prove that some hardware works and it’s the OS or user’s fault that the system won’t work.
I friend just bought a Fujitsu-Siemens PC and it won’t recognize any optical discs. Windows keeps asking to insert the disc, but Knoppix boots and mounted disc’s in the other drive are readable. Point proven, saved him the trouble of sending his machine back.
Can knoppix boot from cd and automatically use a USB stick for it’s /home partition? Would be great for checking e-mail (gpg..), etc.
Yes, knoppix can do that.
K, Knoppix, Configuration, Create persistent home dir
Then boot with:
knoppix home=scan
we just downloaded the cebit edition. very nice, but don’t forget to do boot: knoppix lang=en
wonderful cd
Seems to me the biggest difference in the release would be the Captive NTFS installer. Otherwise IMHO its all the same compared to 3.3
For some reason I get a segment fault when it tries probing my scsi, only when I try knoppix26, 2.4 works ok though. All and all, its pretty nice.
I recently tried Knoppix myself, however it was not satisfying in the least. The edges are too sharp, it gets too blurry while in motion and all in all is just a second class drop-in. It is just a sorry excuse for the real thing, really.
I guess I will stay with my trusted frisbee after all.

it really is . Altho I would like a Knoppix based livecd with XFCE 4 , does that exist?
I heard there’s Gnoppix with Gnome too…
good to see support for the ipw2100 driver for the centrino wireless on laptops!
“I would like a Knoppix based livecd with XFCE 4”
That’d be Morphix LightGUI.
The menus would benefit from some cleanup/more categories.
I think they got osnewsed. Am I the only one that can’t even load up the site?
Boot it up and my USB keyboard and mouse go dead.
whoa cant even get to see the changelog…let alone download. Need confirmation on Centrino wireless…did they get that working on this version?
Knoppix download servers are on fire; it won’t even let me connect (times out).
I ca’t get the torrent to work.
azureus starts up and allocates but cant connect to any one
I tried a differnet torrent and it works fine
anyone else have this problem
Knoppixfan, how does that work? i went to the NX homepage and it shows how to connect to a NX Trial Server, how do I use a public server to link my home box to a remote box?
Are you using a firewall? If you don’t open the correct ports, bittorrent sucks. If you do, it is usually very quick (plus it checks the validity of the file you download too).
However, having said that, the torrent for Knoppix is currently very slow regardless.
At TLMP (the linux mirror project)
http://www.tlm-project.org/distributions/browse_distro.php?distro_i…
if you miss the bittorrent utility, the mirror master of KaiserslauternUniversität has it already to ftp
Kernel26 doesn’t boot on 3 different computers I tried. They segfault on scsi detection and/or freeze on Network Card configuration.
Got one to boot with all the no{..} options on the command line.
All 3 boot fine with the stock 24 kernel and no command lines
On one centrino notebook tried to get wireless to work without success.
The link to the 3.4 torrent doesn’t seem to be working. Any other torrent links out there?
