Microsoft just doesn’t get it. If I want to evaluate something, I don’t want Big Nanny Microsoft peering over my shoulder.
If I’m doing it for myself, I don’t want to be answerable to Microsoft for a mere evaluation copy, especially one that’s a mere 2711 KB big.
And I fail to see how needing to get a product key’s going to help me evaluate the product in any sense. That’s just unnecessary bureaucratic nonsense.

In *theory* what the key should mean is that you can provide feedback on their product and if they need further information, they can contact you. Also, what it means is they can “target” their adverstising to you under the assumption that you are interested in deploying an embedded Win CE 5.0 device.
The reality is that it is used for nothing, and as you said, “That’s just unnecessary bureaucratic nonsense.”. I’ve yet to see any reason to justify this sort of registration. It is like Real Networks and their registration; unnecessary and discourages potential customers/developers from using their products.
