If you read the article again you will see that it says:
“USB 2.0, about forty times faster than conventional USB, makes its debut in Linux 2.6”
i.e. It is USB2.0 support that is present for the 1st time in kernel 2.6. Not USB1.0 nor USB1.1 but USB2.0.
This standard was finalised end 2001, devices and motherboards are only recently begining to be compatible. Windows only fully supports from W2K-SP4 and XP-SP1.
So, no, not marketing material and no need to get all sick. Remember they are just operating systems, not football teams or political parties.
