This is something really revolutionary! Till now I didn’t heard about a solution which allows to distribute MPI-applications on clients, where the clients are monitored and not touched, if they’re under load or just in use. This is what differentiates XGrid from eg Sun Grid solution. Cudos to Apple!

we will probably see more revolutionary tings from apple this year.
But this does it all. Now lets hope it will find its way into the market.
Clustering is something that is going to do wonders for people, and I’m glad that Apple and projects like DragonFly are addressing the need for it.
XGrid is a wonderful little product. Isn’t it going to be a part of the next version of Mac OS X Server?
I wouldn’t doubt it being part of the next OS X Client considering what so many Macs are used for.
Let me ask.
Say I, a software developer, has Xgrid installed.
What could I use it for here at my job or at home? I mean does it have uses for ordinary people? Can I take all the Macs in my house and run like ANT build scripts and distribute that build? Distribute large tar/gzip jobs, file copes, etc?

Don’t yet quote me on this, as I am still looking for the references, but I do recall reading that you can use this for distributed builds among other things.

You can do that already.

You can do that already.
How? with Xgrid?

oh right, if I am using Rendevous and xCode.
What if I am using XGrid, gcc, etc, could I create a task in XGrid that say runs a script that has a bunch of tasks, etc and distribute that over the 5 macs in my house….

Still don’t need XGrid. Applescript couldn’t get any easier.

wow you have 5 macs. I’m jealous
I’ll be as cool as you in about 10 years

Hmm, well I write software for a living, need a testing machine, my wife has an eMac, my son has my old G3 iBook and I have a 12-inch Powerbook also.
I am not above anyone…just this is my job.
So It seems that I should be able to use XGrid to distribute any task among my machines, but I just sont see how.
Maybe time tocheck out the XGrid mailing list and see.
