AbiWord 2.0.2 and GIMP 2.0-pre3 are available for SkyOS. SkyOS 5.0-beta4 will include AbiWord and GIMP as GTK ports as well as a few other GTK applications like a Calender, Notepad etc. In other news, a new binary PE handler (faster program loading/linking) has been implemented as well as SkyGI performance improvements.
Wow, they’re making incredible progress on this OS. I’m considering paying the $30 to support them and test the betas. I wonder if they’ll be doing a mono port soon?
SkyOS still needs a couple things before I am fully willing and able to spend money to try it (email app and IM client) but it is a very impressive project. Once those two things are implemented I will pay the $30. I do hope people start working on drivers soon…that will be one thing that will hinder the evolution of this project.
These people are amazing. They can’t be stoped!!! GOOD LUCK SkyOS!
can this os run windows apps natively? if so will games run on it ?? (although driver support may not be there just yet) but still ?? in theory woudl they be able to ??

Hi
“can this os run windows apps natively? if so will games run on it ?? (although driver support may not be there just yet) but still ?? in theory woudl they be able to ??
”
no. thats not a goal. driver support can only be there if there is a lot more demand for it.

Jess
I told a fellow at work he could download the V4 and try it to see how cool it was. It seems that it is no longer available or I can’t find it. Maybe V5 will be offered sometime.
Amazing progress. No, jaw dropping astounding is better,
The only thing that is so ‘special’ about SkyOS is that they advertise their OS, so that people know about it and its progress. Surely, Robert is working very hard on SkyOS, but when looking at the internals of it, it’s just a mess.
There are many other OS projects with at least the same if not much more potential out there, but they don’t get so much attention. I don’t like the fact that they begin to make money with SkyOS while there are so many better OSes around that get discontinued just because of the lack of interest.
That may not be a goal, but how about just windows games support.
“but when looking at the internals of it, it’s just a mess.”
Would you care to elaborate on that statement?
by internals im assuming you mean code, how did u aquire the code as it is closed source?
“I don’t like the fact that they begin to make money with SkyOS while there are so many better OSes around that get discontinued just because of the lack of interest.”
Do you mean that it’s wrong of the SkyOS coders to charge money for their OS for the reason of many other better OSes gets abondend?
Why should the SkyOS team care about other OSes that lacks peoples interest?! Why do you think that the SkyOS team shouldn’t charge for their OS, when they for sure gets the same bills every months like you and I do?
You are just a stupid troll who don’t even deserves to be “reported as an abuse”.
Poor you. I hope that you just were joking.
will it be possible to use windows drivers?
hi guys,
does the beta4 support nforce ethernet and geforce4?
Does anyone know how Skyos installs drivers and applications? the project seems really good but this has always been a trouble area for linux for many people.

Step 1: Double-click .zip file
Step 2: Click “next”
Step 3: Done
The OS market is saturated. There is the gorilla (Windows), the snob (OSX), and the rebel (linux). There isn’t any room for a fourth player, particularly since Linux hasn’t got off its growth curve yet. In about ten years there will be a real need for an alternative to Linux. Try again then, and bring something novel to the table.
Sour grapes.
Hi!
I have a copy of 4 on my server… somewhere.
I will try to find it for you!
I will copy it into the FTP directory for one week!
I change my mind, I think that $30 is looking better and better everyday. With useful apps like Gimp and Abiword this could go somewhere. Is it my impression that XMMS is also a GTK app. That would be a killer app to port along with Evolution.
I may not be up to date, but I believe XMMS is a GTK+ app, not GTK+2.
I doubt they’ll port too much over, they’re not making another GNOME. Just getting a few apps they need.
why they didn’t port xchat?
In the forums it’s pretty clearly stated they don’t want to port all the GTK apps; just a few quick starters. They intend to have native apps written.
probably because irssi owns xchat? question is if irssi runs thought ;D
If it takes ~10 years to stabalize an OS, then that time is in fact right now.
An OS cannot be created at the time that it is really needed and be expected to be usable in a timely fashion. This, in part, is why OS’s have to be ahead of their time and need to be developed with good timing (possibly by accident – being in the right spot at the right time).
that I require anymore is the Gaim port to be completed. After that the rest is just fine.
