This technical whitepaper by Rafael Kolic, a technology marketing manager in Intel’s Corporate Technology Group, introduces Wireless USB (WUSB) and explains how it will impact device performance and mobility. The latest iteration of USB technology, WUSB will offer the same functionality as standard wired USB devices — but without the cabling.
Bluetooth anybody? I don’t get it, there are differences b/w the two, but it’s pretty much the same thing w/ a different name.
Not really.
The thing about Wireless USB is that its fully compatiable with existing USB drivers; probably devices, too, once a clever manufactor starts creating wireless endpoints for your favorite USB hardware.
To the OS it’s completely transparent: once you turn on a Wireless USB device it looks just the same as if it had been plugged directly into the box itself. No need for new, special drivers, no weird conflicts. Its just another USB device to the OS, after all. Bluetooth is an entirely different protocol.
There’s the additional bonus of more thoroughput for data, but that comes at the price of power, a fair bit more than Bluetooth uses.
The only thing they share in common is the fact that both are for wireless technologies.
On the subject of Bluetooth vs WUSB, all I have to say is… may the best technology win.
wireless endpoints for your favorite USB hardware.
Uh, oops. I meant wireless extensions–dongles you could slap onto USB connectors to make any USB device “wireless.”
They’d just have really long tails, is all. ;p
One og the good points about USB, is that it can power devices thru the cable. Batteries are never popular, and I can’t see WUSB being useful to ie. USB-HD’s (and actually every other device, all of which requries current). I’m not 100& sure about this, so please enlighten me.
Sorry about the typos… Would also add, that I haven’t read the whitepaper yet, so I’ll probably find the answer to my queation myself. It was just my initial thought, when thinking about WUSB.
