The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce
that The NetBSD Foundation Inc. now is classified as an Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) publicly-funded non-profit organization. Donations to the Foundation by US taxable entities are now fully tax-deductible. For more information about donations to The NetBSD Foundation, please see: http://www.NetBSD.org/donations/, Other contributions are, of course, also always welcome.
Thats great news. 🙂
Hopefully they can make it work though.
So how much time did it take them to become a non-profit organisation?
The question must be, how much time did it take them to be *officially certified* as one.
Most of those are moot questions. They are one now. It doesn’t matter how long it took or what it took.
Nice to have that tax deduction. A worthwhile donation for sure
OpenBeOS applies for non-profit too. I wondered.
I have been working on setting up a non-profit for the ReactOS project for about the past 2 years. Time and Money are both something that comes in short supply working on a free software project. Adding the load of trying to start a non-profit on top of that and you can see why these things take a while.
Now, it is true that they are completely free. They are not even in the business of making money, so there can be no confusion, unlike some other operating systems!
Hi,
i’m wondering, why is it so hard to start a NGO in the USA? I remember that Gentoo has a hard time doing it, i remember Freenode had a hard time doing it, but here in the Netherlands we’re currently busy with starting officially a NGO and it takes a bit of paper work (descriptions and such) and a bit of money (129 EUR iirc) and that’s it. So what is the difference, what do you have to do to start a NGO?
The USA’s economy is based on lawyers. If the lawyers are fat from the money of the little people, then everything is good.
Really? Does starting a NGO involve a LAWYER in the USA?????
