Mandrake’s latest beta is up on Bittorrent [Bittorrent Link] ISOs will be on normal FTP mirrors soon. Some features: kernel 2.6.2 rc3, Mozilla 1.6, kdebase 3.2 pre, XFree86 4.4 pre. Drakconnect, testzilla available for testing. See the new menu structure, now in final version.
This is shaping up to be an excellent release – the new development process should ensure a better final product – thanks to everyone at Mandrake – looking forward to the Community version.
is there any FTP Mirrors?
Nope, if Mandrake follows tradition of rushing through every single beta before each beta is properly dealt with (bug fixes, etc.), I don’t see why this would be better than its previous releases. Sure, it may boast all the wonderful features of kernel 2.6.x and KDE 3.2, but if it is unstable as hell, I’m not interested.
More so, it have been years since Mandrake have release any product with any polish whatsoever. It is the little details that hook people on – Mandrake is low on details. And if you rewind to Mandrake’s first release, it was willing to break status quo to achieve better ease of use (in that case, using KDE). Now, however, it is a simplified Linux distribution that is still targeted towards geeks. And seeing its financial problems, I have doubts whether this market is profitable or not.
don’t you mean community edition ????
Have you read up on MDK’s new release policies and schedule yet? Check out OsNews’ own article at http://osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=5881 . They’ve stated that they arent going to be “rushing” through things like they had in the past, and are really listening to their users and having more Q/A time. So in reality 10.0 “offical” wont be out for a couple months even though we are already in the beta process.
The linux OS market will be and is profitable in the short term. I do not think It will survive in the long run unless if your red hat and makes you go into agreements of not copying their IP…… If you sell some sort of service apart of it or you have software that just uses the linux KERNEL then it may be profitable. If you just take a commercial OS and let it run ontop of the linux kernel then that would be profitable.. using the GNU Operating system won’t really be profitable.. Using a BSD system is profitable…. I think you’ll see alot more popularity involving BSD athlough linux has stolen alot of the spotlight. Furthermore, I think Mandrake is shaping up and will take a lead in the distros eventually if they have not already… I think that mandrake is currently profitable once again due to changes with that company.. I am unsure how long they can hold out since I personally feel that just a “community-driven, not-for-profit” organization can drive the operating system just as good.
Who knows… I just don’t want my bank running on Linux or Windows 🙁 … Maybe when Linux matures a little more. But I still feel it is enterprise quality, NASA has proven that one.
Is there will be an i86-64 release of mandrake 10 ????
Didn’t see the end of your comment.
But again, stay up with the news. MDK is successfully coming out of financial problems, and the problems weren’t due to their distro in the first place.
They old mgt. wanted to “diversify” their offerings and they tried e/learning stuff and other things that never panned out and sunk them pretty quickly.
But now they have new management and have focused on a single aspect of business which will help out tremendously.
>>Nope, if Mandrake follows tradition of rushing through every single beta before each beta is properly dealt with (bug fixes, etc.),<<
That’s why they’ve changed the development process to have the usuall series of beta’s leading to a “Community” version – then a few months later they’ll release the “Official” version – personally feel this is an improvement over previous systems.
>>More so, it have been years since Mandrake have release any product with any polish whatsoever<<
That’s overstating it a little…….. on the contrary Mandrake are known for a reasonable level of polish relative to many other distributions – sure, there have been well documented exceptions, but on the whole relative to many other distributions Mandrake’s done a reasonable job.
Regards financials, lets hope Mandrake pushes harder in France to start with – likely to see some success there this year……. good luck.
And it works very well, no problems with instability, just minor things I could fix anyway. When Mandrake 10 is released I will download immediatly and install.
Hopefully there will be ATI/nVidia drivers for XFree 4.4 out by then so we will have full 3d acceleration.

Any version for the PowerMac G5 yet? 64bit possibly?
nick: Have you read up on MDK’s new release policies and schedule yet?
Considering it was only posted today, yeah, I kinda missed it. LOL :-).

If the distro was extremely profitable, those losses could have been sustained without much of a problem. From what I’ve seen, it seems that Mandrake had always been balancing the books, some quarters it goes into losses, other quarters it manage to pull it through breaking even. They probably made a few bucks in profit before those hefty French taxes. If the distro actually continued down the road they first stumbled upon, Mandrake may have been the ultimate enterprise choice in desktop Linux. And they would have managed to make quite a mean buck.
> rajan r is just a troll.
nah.. he’s just a non-believer. =oP
Well, I’ve been running Beta 1, and it blows the pants of Fedora Core 1, and Mandrake 9.2 (download edition). I’m a ‘Club Member’ so I might be biased (although I noticed most of the club members are getting upset at some of the things Mandrake’s been doing.. but looks like those issues are being solved), however I think Mandrake is soon going to be THE desktop linux, Kinda like Red Hat was… (Till they switched to Fedora Core, which, while good, isn’t being pushed, nor is it as wide knows as ‘Red Hat Linux’ was/is.) Personally, I think Mandrake has a good level of polish, and they make thier OS ‘pretty’ something I really like about it. (Except for the stupid Mozilla Icon…. but that’s just me being anal )
Now, the big issue I have with them is simply thier distribution system. I can’t use BT, since I’m behind a campus firewall. That means I need an FTP link.. which… well.. they never seem to get around to. Having a T-3 line, I can download quite quickly… and I don’t care if I get it in 30 hours.. that’s better than 30 weeks… (current BT download time) *sigh*
I downloaded and tried to install beta 2 but when lilo was about to install it crashed.
Back in Lindows now but I will probably try again just out of curiousity if there is a new Mandrake beta before Lindows 5 goes beta.
I picked it up from the Cooker ML. The website will pick the news up soon, I guess they want everything on the FTP mirrors and ready before they put out the press release.
Its on many ftp’s already, here are a few: ftp://mirrors.secsup.org/pub/linux/mandrake/Mandrake-iso/i586/
ftp://mandrake.mirrors.pair.com/mandrake-iso/i586/
I really hope they come out with a new version for the Ibook G4 (ppc), yellowdog has problems with the video card right now.
if mandrake wanna survive ‘again’ all they need todo is
1. to produce less buggy distro
2. polished out of the box experience
3. simplify their product line (just look at mandrake store wat a mess) for current state of mandrake one product for desktop and one for server is good enough.
4. redo their clumsy websiteS
5. get out of the mandrakeclub frenzy
6. sharpen the company/distro image (branding strategy!!!)
2 releases for a single product is outright stupid in some way even worst than redhat/fedora.
pls dont fall again.
Somebody know when Mandrake 10.0 final will finished and available for download? Thanks.
i hear that its gonna finish on 18-feb.
Here’s the Mandrake 10 roadmap that confirms the 18 feb date :

But the “Community” version is said to be out on February/March, and the “Official” version on April/May

Seems there’s an english version of this information :

Well ya, thats kinda my point. The fact that there PRIOR managment didn’t was kinda stupid, I agree. But you also have to look at what the NEW managment is doing. I believe that they got rid of all the old upper ups (someone correct me if I’m wrong) when they went into the french equivalent of chapter 11.
All I’m saying is that this is hopefully a new and better MDK company that what was before and dont be so quick to flush them down the toilet because they have had trouble in the past.
as with most linux distros this is no easier to use, i wanted to move one file from a floppy to a root admin area but it wouldn’t let me. No chance of a password request to do so either, linux has a long way to go before it is mainstream enough to be well received by the majority of windows users.
if you need root privileges for an operation, perform the operation as root. this is hard how?
as for dates – the roadmap is a roadmap. it’s vague, it’s generally missed, although not often by much. i expect what will happen is cooker will be completely frozen in 10.0 state by 18-20 feb, and ISOs will make their way out by end of feb / start of march. then cooker will unfreeze for work on 10.1, and after a couple of months 10.0 plus all the updates released for it in that time will be rolled together as the “stable” release.
As a long time linux user, and Mandrake user, I would like to take the time to say that Mandrak needs to dump the whole “club” thing, and just let people download their software instead of paying and arm and a leg for it. They have a great product (except for Mandrake 9.2, we all know what a f**k-up that was.), and I hope that they keep getting better. As far as Linux goes IMHO Mandrake-Linux is the easiest to install, setup, and use, and i believe that all distros should have a “point-cand-click” installer (as well as a text-based, and expert) and make it easy for the average Windows user to install and use. Afterall people, we want people to want to use Linux, not to say, “it’s to hard, I don’t understand it, I’ll stick with Windows bacause its easier.
Well, that’s my two-cents.
um, you can download Mandrake entirely free without joining MandrakeClub.
I am downloading the bittorent the 1.9 GB file over Bittorent, and I am curious… is this 3 iso files? If so what do I use to split them as there is no extension (.zip etc). Sorry for the stupid question, I am a noob.
The Club is an option which generates a lot of money for the company. How could Mandrake continue to produce a product without revenue?
