LinuxDevices.com reports that Lycoris is going to release a version of its desktop Linux operating system (OS) designed specifically for handheld devices in Q2, 2004. The OS, dubbed Desktop/LX Pocket PC Edition (DL-PPC), which will initially support ARM-based PDAs such as the Sharp Zaurus and HP iPaq.
How do they plan on people installing this? This process requires a serial dock and is fairly risky.
I doubt they’ll get HP to ship with it.
For the Lycoris folks. Before you get these delusions of grandeur in becoming a tablet and now PDA powerhouse, how about updating your desktop distribution with some modern components*.
* No, i’m not just talking about KDE.
Is there a distribution that supports the Palm IIIc???
Will it sync with a Linux Desktop? Is it even real?
Will it sync with a Linux Desktop?
According to the article it syncs with their desktop OS.

They’ll probably go for whitebox oem deals rather than selling it retail, just like their tablet pc OS.
No, i’m not just talking about KDE.
Well, what are you talking about then? According to http://www.distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=lycoris their distro is *fairly* up to date, except for KDE. Maybe not as bleeding edge as some would like, but not back in the dark ages anyway. Aside from this, KDE 3.x is coming real soon, see http://www.desktopos.com/article.php?sid=58&mode=&order=0&thold=0
They are even updating their Productivity Pak
if only those pda prices go down
“Well, what are you talking about then?”
I’m talking about
rpm 3.06
perl 5.6.0
gcc 2.95.2
…and more.
Whilst I know it’s still available in Japan, and as a grey import, Sharp killed the Zaurus stone dead in Europe. I know this coz around Christmas time I was thinking of buying one (SL5500 IIRC) and you just can *not* find them for sale online anywhere in the UK. I later discovered that (the only UK model) was discontinued. Lovely….
sup monkey how ares dev comming along
now i dont think the end user going to care what ver of gcc or rpm lycoris ships with most of the user aint even going to be compling stuff ya for a dev we all are going to want the latest ver of those stuff cause it will make our lifs easer now i do know gcc will bring speed improvments but what rpm and perl going to bring for the end user
It won’t support the Palm IIIc, nor will any other distro of use, except the micro ones that do nothing other than act as a tech demo. Because the Palm IIIc is ancient and runs an old Dragonball 68k CPU.
do Lycoris already have hand-writing recognition features on their tablet OS?
do Lycoris already have hand-writing recognition features on their tablet OS?
Yes, they have handwriting gesture recognition. They also have “portrait mode” functioning as well. This means that the screen can be displayed in any of the four directions you’re able to hold the tablet.
Is the recognition comparable though to say XP Tablet Edition or if they’ve plans for a PDA, how will it compare to Palm’s?
1) Why isn’t it named Palmtop/LX similar to Desktop/LX? But that’s fairly minor..
2) What I really don’t understand is why they are entering an extremely new competitive market when they haven’t mastered their current market; especially when both markets work rather differently. I’m not going to pass judgement over this product but really, the timing? It isn’t as if the Pocket PC market is exploding.
True or False?
This process requires a serial dock and is fairly risky.
It’s as dangerous as the MS PocketPC update. Or flashing firmware. Which are things that plenty of people do.
If you brick your iPaq, Compaq can fix it pretty easily too.
If it’s that easy tell me why there is *NO* way to install QNX or Linux for PPCs in that manner. They both require flashing in a new bootloader (there is an easy, PPC application to do this), but the rest requires a serial terminal connection to send files over.
It would cost so much to have Compaq fix it that you might as well buy a new one, because they sure aren’t going to fix it for free.
“if only those pda prices go down”
I can highly recommend the Palm Tungsten E which is very reasonably priced.
Actually, you have no idea what you’re talking about. If you frequented a place like handhelds.org, you would know that Compaq has a policy of un-bricking your PDA if you tried to flash Linux onto it, FOR FREE.

Mm, you just love being wrong don’t you. As well as your balls up over bricked ipaqs, there is also an easy way PPC to install handheld linux distro’s onto your flash rom. The bootloader (which as you said is easily installed) can automatically install it from a compressed archive (which is easily downloaded from handhelds.org) residing on a CF.
If it was so risky, why would companies as responsible as MS distribute upgrades that write to the flash rom as well?
Stop spreading FUD.
That’s an ‘easy PPC way’ rather than ‘easy way PPC’, even.
I haven’t had crashing problems with ActiveSync. Also, there is a very good divx player freely available for pocket pc.
Apart from the lack of good sync, the linux distro’s for pocket pc already support everything you mention you want. Visit http://www.handhelds.org
Given the work that a single developper (kudos to proto) can do to improve the stock zaurus OS, I am very interested to see what new life Lycoris can bring to my ever born again zaurus
“Given the work that a single developper (kudos to proto) can do to improve the stock zaurus OS, I am very interested to see what new life Lycoris can bring to my ever born again zaurus”
Proto hasn’t done nearly as much for the Zaurus as Sash has! Cacko.biz has a full X11 implementation for the clamshell Zaurus devices and it runs beautifully. And the work that proto claims to have done on his newest clamshell Qtopia ROM was mostly adapted from sash’ original work.
I use Cacko/sash Qtopia on my Zaurus SL-C760. I’m certain that I’ll be using the X11 ROM in a few weeks time.
Looks like they just skinned OPIE (http://opie.handhelds.org/). OPIE is a fork of Sharp’s ROM updated to new version of software (QT, etc).
Flashing: I guess the Sharp ROM updates can update the bootloader, but the OPIE/Openzaurus procedure is reasonably bulletproof. If it fails, you pull the battery and flash the Sharp rom back onto the machine. (I’ve done it once, and my SL5500 still works).

Sorry… thats not me, someone else that uses Xtra and Lycoris. After all, Xtra is one of New Zealand’s biggest ISP, so I am not their only user
Aside from that, Ares is taking shape
