This is the fourth in a series of reviews of Debian-based distributions. The first three have covered the best known commercial distributions. LibraNet is aimed more at existing Linux users – including Debian users – than those from the Windows world. Read the review at NewsForge.
after only an hour and twenty minutes, the install was completed
I’m personally wouldn’t be thrilled about an hour and twenty minute install time. It isn’t terrible, but for example, fedora installed on my similar spec laptop in about 45 minutes. Doesn’t Lindows install in way less time than that, if I remember previous articles?
in the hour and twenty minutes, all applications were installed, including 4 different desktop environments, kde, gnome, xfce, and xvwm
i just bought libranet last week, because i wanted to try out their new additional libranet repository, which maintains compatibility with the existing debian repositories. no other distro has this.
easily upgrade to gnome 2.4, kde 3.1.5, openoffice 1.1 etc…
adminmenu is great, it takes the difficult tasks of putting together a stock debian system onto an easy to use interface.
libranet is for power users, and can be good for new users alike, if you are willing to learn.
if you love debian like me, but dont have the time to put together a full fledged desktop from scratch, then use libranet.
Well, depends how many packages you install. Duh. Also Libranet uses apt-get to install them, but they have the kudzu hardware detection.
I can only say one thing: Libranet is great. I run it besides Slackware and *BSD.
NOw I am going to. Thankyou for the above comments.
I just did a clean install of Libranet 2.8.1 on my main laptop yesterday and upgraded the versions of mozilla, gnome and open office from the new libranet upgrade system. It’s great! I’m running it now, and I am very pleased with it. I was running Fedora Core 1 before this. Give Libranet a try, it’s a killer distribution!
