LynuxWorks is shipping BlueCat Linux 5.0, its first production release based on Linux kernel 2.6. LynuxWorks calls the release “the industry’s first commercially available embedded Linux distribution based on Linux 2.6,” although SnapGear earlier released a free embedded Linux distribution based on 2.6 which it claimed represented the “world’s first production Linux system powered by the 2.6 kernel.“
Turbolinux 10, released about 3 months ago, shipped with kernel version 2.6.0-test5.
That was/is brave of them 🙂
Wasn’t that before that weird bug that shouldn’t have been possible thing was sorted out? And isn’t there still some confusion as to whether all of the 2.4 security fixes have been ported forward?
That said, I, personally, haven’t had a single problem with the new kernel and I’ve been running it (exclusively) since about halfway through 2.5.
SuSE 9.0 also shipped with 2.6.0-test-5 but it’s not available as an install-time option, it’s not supported and in can only be installed manually on the command line. I suppose the same applies to Turbolinux and other distros that shipped with a beta kernel at that time..
I think we’ll see major distros shipping with 2.6.x as the default kernel within the first quarter of 2004 when most bugs have beeen ironed out. But on the other hand, but only get sqashed trough widespread testing by end users, so I guess SuSE 9.2 should be a stable distro well worth it’s money.
how can it be considered “commercial” when they are still working on finalizing the kernel? I will wait.
Who is still working on finalizing the kernel? 2.6.0 was released oner a month ago. Hell… even 2.6.1 has been aout for 2 weeks. It’s final.

According to LWN’s review of Turbolinux 10, that is not the case. 2.6.0-test5 is the only kernel it shipped with. Apparently there was no option even to perform the installation with a stable version of the kernel.
