Windows CE.NET was ported to Xbox when the device is modded. The basic kernel subsystem is in place. The IoCtl is about 90% done. ISR/IST is up and working. PCI enumeration happens properly. USB initializes and enumerates devices (but hangs if there’s a gamepad connected). Mouse driver loads. Keyboard driver loads but is missing a layout, so it’s not quite functional yet. A very simple video driver is in place. Screenshots here and here.

Screw ’em them.
i doubt they want slashdot’s “attention” either, easy way to do this, mirror locally on OSNews, or copy the url out and paste it into the address bar of your browser.
Looks like things have calmed down.
Using Firebird, right click on link “Save Link to Disk”
Tada!!
Which codebase is CE.NET, is it NT or windows system (whatever MS is calling it these days)?
Apart from price of H/W, why the XBOX?
If they can go this far with XBOX, does this mean it can be installed on normal x86 H/W?
I had the same problem when I first went for a look…using Opera
Tried it with IE and it worked first time. Bugger.
Hm.. Xbox no thanks. Nintendo Gamecube is the Power PC way to go!

What’s wrong with wasting time?
Try it sometime it’s quite theraputic(is that spelled correctly it’s been a while since my last councelling session)
As for… why? well why climb a mountain?… Simply for the thrill of the challenge is the simple answer.
Congrats to the author/s i’m chuffed to bits about this.
Xbox is much better than gamecube. Why do you think they had to drop the price eighty dollars just to compete?

In the US it is $99. The price drop doesn’t have much to do with which system is “better”, but more with what people would rather pay.
If price decides which system is best, then PS2 is just as good as Xbox. I think you’ll agree at least that, from a technical standpoint at least, the PS2 is less powerful than both the Xbox and Gamecube.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Sega Dreamcast use Windows CE as a base operating system? Does this mean there might be (in the far future) a way to perfectly emulate my favorite Sega console?

And guess what’s going in the next version of the XBox?

PowerPC chip, a pretty high end one at that I believe. I don’t really like the XBox, but if the next gen pans out, it’s going to have some serious horsepower.

It would only be for games that used the windows API’s which I belive is not many. Could be wrong though. There are projects out there to emulate the DC anyway they seem to be getting somewhere too.
Happy New Year

The dreamcast is WindowsCE “compatible” the OS has to be on the disk with the game that uses it. Most games are written “direct to the metal”.
Yep, great seeing those shots. Anyway why should we care about this?

Because it’s news. Thanks for adding to the continuing troll problem.
hi, just to let you know the dreamcast did have a version of windows ce build for it, however it was’t included on any built in ROM in the hardware and applications that wanted to run on CE needed a licence from microsoft first. Most of the programs that were written for CE were applications, such as the dreamarena/webbrowser, email and irc client. The wndows CE that was provided was very limited and wasn’t ment to be used for builting games on to, however the basics were still there for any game to use if they had the code and licence from microsoft.
The dreamcast could technically outperform even the playstation 2 in some arenas, the down fall for the console was the easy of piracy, the console didn’t even need to be ‘mod chipped’ nor did you need any special dvd burner. Its a shame because the later games on the console were getting better as the developers started to get used to and make use of the hardware they had.
I’m currently posting this message on a windows CE 3.x device, and it looks just like the xbox screenshots. if you’ve not used windows ce before you may find it disapoiting if/or and when you get to play with it on your xbox. it really just looks like windows, not much more. applications are as compatable as in other versions of windows on your pc, .net may help with this but there still is a lack of developers., still it’d be nice to have a webbrowser and email client on the xbox, they shouldn’t be hard. however, what i’d most like to see is an irc client
good effort but still far from something usable. Kudos to the developers.
