I find myself using a number of OSes daily but for the OSes I use most, I have some favorite third party applications that I can’t live without. Here are my application lists for Windows, Unix/Linux, Mac OS X and BeOS; applications I always download and install after a clean OS installation. Please tell us about your favorite third party apps you use on different OSes by using the provided comment section.Note: The applications are not listed in any particular order.
Windows
Pretty standard applications I must say.
1. WinZip
2. Trillian
3. Paint Shop Pro
4. GetRight and CuteFTP or FileZilla
5. Java
6. mIRC
7. Acrobat Reader, AbiWord & OpenOffice.org
8. Nero
9. Mozilla/Firebird and Opera
10. Media Pack (WinAMP, DivX, QuickTime, VLC and Real)
Unix/Linux
On Linux, most distros already come with these following applications, but on other Unices they don’t always come as standard as they are not part of X, Gnome or KDE. If that happens, here’s what I try to get for these systems:
1. Gaim or Kopete
2. K3B
3. OpenOffice.org & AbiWord or KOffice
4. ‘Downloader for X’ and gFTP
5. RDesktop & tsclient
6. The Gimp
7. X-Chat
8. Media Pack (VLC, Ogle, MPlayer, XMMS and Xine w/ Totem)
9. Quick Lounge for gnome-panel
10. Ximian Evolution
Mac OS X
I wrote a more comprehensive Mac OS X application list the other day, but this is my really-must-have list.
1. Fire
2. Transmit, Speed Download or iGetter
3. DiscBlaze
4. Media Pack (MacAMP Lite, VLC, MPlayer, Micorosft Media Player)
5. X-Chat Aqua
6. Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection
7. CodeTek VirtualDesktop
8. USB Overdrive X
9. Photoshop Elements or GraphicConverter or MacGimp
10. Watson
BeOS
I don’t use BeOS much anymore (maybe one or two reboots per month), but here is my list. You can see screenshots and more info about these apps on BeBits or BeZip.
1. ProcessController
2. VLC
3. ArtPaint or Refraction or Becasso
4. Helios CDRecorder
5. OpenTracker
6. BeShare
7. BePDF
8. SoundPlay
9. Bezilla or Firebird
10. Vision
BeOS 5 hasn’t been updated for quite a long time and so the OS itself doesn’t come with a lot of stuff resulting in the need to download more third party applications in order to get a more complete experience. Here are some more apps that I usually need to install under BeOS.
11. NetPenguin and BeGet
12. Gobe Productive
13. ‘Terminal Here’ Tracker addon
14. GifTranslator and ImageViewer
15. GimICQ, Y!, MSN and AIM clients
Mac OS X
– Stickies
– iTem
– Terminal
– XTerm (I always runs all those terms at a time)
– AppKido
– GNUMail.app
– Vim
– Safari
– BitchX
GNU/Linux
– Terminal.app
– XTerm
– screen
– GNUMail.app
– Vim
– BitchX
– w3m
– GIMP
That’s all…
Nice, thanks for the list.
BTW, Safari and Terminal are not third party apps (even xterm comes by default now on Panther’s 3rd CD
As a developer I can’t live without these (Slackware):
– KDevelop
– MozillaFirebird
– Apache httpd
– MySQL
– Rsync
I prefer to compile apache and mysql thats why they are in the list
Java
Freenet. I have to Check out Content of Evil.
Windows
Cd Ex or Exact Audio Copy For CD ripping
Lame (mp3) lossy encoding
Monkey’s Audio lossless encoding(Might try FLAC or OptimFROG again).
TagScanner the Best and Easiest to use mp3 tag handler, better or as good as ArmyKnife for BeOS.
Kazaalite, MlDonkey, Shareaza, WinMX file trading
ASF Tools for treating stupid windows media files
Irfanview Image Viewer (it needs to know not to try to load mp3s and videos when I don’t associate them)
Adaware gets rid of spyware crap
Mozilla The better browser TM
GIMP Image manipulation with a right click TM
WinRAR for zip and rar archives
AIM and yahoo instant messengers
Winamp for music
and Nero for CD creation and copying
NotepadEx Becasue MS Notepad sucks TM
VirtualDub, flask, Vidomi, and divx(and other codecs) for video conversion.
That’s all I’ll force you to read.
Now how about favorite websites?
Windows
This is quite some while ago, so maybe some of these are obsolete now.
1. winzip/winrar
2. winamp
3. Mozilla Firebird
4. mirc/teamspeak/all seeing eye (aka “gaming tools”)
5. gaim
6. The Gimp
7. jEdit or some other windows-only text editor which was pretty neat but I discovered it too late to use it a lot and now I forgot the name)
8. TheBat (also licensed, but the fact that I’m not even sure I’d still be able to find my key reminds me of how much I loathe proprietary software)
9. Getright
I think that’s it.
Linux
Most comes with a default installation of Fedora/GNOME, with a few exceptions:
1. XQF (I don’t like it, but it’s the only choice)
2. Teamspeak (proprietary and ugly but very important)
3. The Nvidia driver installer (basically, that’s an application :p)
4. The media players that aren’t included in RedHat/Fedora for legal reasons (xmms mp3 plugin, rhythmbox with mp3 support, totem, mplayer)
5. Java and jEdit (though I’m trying to get away from this because it’s a PITA, alternatives are rare though)
6. Red Carpet (no Fedora support yet for Ximian channels, but with Open Carpet it’s a much more convenient alternative to yum)
And those are the standard apps that I’d get in any case:
5. Epiphany
6. Gaim
7. Xchat
8. Evolution
9. Gimp
11. OpenOffice
I don’t use dedicated FTP tools anymore since both Nautilus and Explorer can handle FTP servers very well.
And the only download tool I use besides the one built into Epiphany is wget.
I only use linux, (even on my powerbook, although i used to be a beos junkie)…so here it goes
emacs (albiet standard on nearly every platform)
pgadmin3 for my postgresql work
anjuta
eclipse 2 & 3 with plugins
rythmbox
hping, fragroute, aide, hunt, opennms, etherape, and the rest of the packet crafting, analysis, vulnrability, etc…. which i use for the software i write at work.
~ chris
and obviously need some sleep. :p
It is quite comprehensive, Eugenia. I myself do not reboot into BeOS often. (quite sad situation though)
But I must comment on that there’s no MSN client on BeOS (at least usable yet)!
On FreeBSD, i also use gqview alot to view pictures It is quite usable for me. And rox the file manager is light-weight but quite good IMHO. How about DVDRip? awesome nifty tool for DVD users! To view pdf, i think acroread is still the better choice than gnome’s default viewer. And as i’m not native english speaker (I am an asian lives in NZ) X input method is a must have for me as well.
Well.. the list goes on. I rekon I’ve installed too many packages on my desktop.

I don’t want to take the time to look up the BeOS one, I never had to format BeOS enough to know them all off hand…
I never really installed any 3rd party stuff in Mac OS X I just use whatever comes with it and install Microsoft Office.
Linux, I just use whatever comes with RedHat and that works for me, but of course…
Xmms-mp3 add on
Xine
Flash
Java
Thats about it.

Here is the problem though… Only 2 and 7 don’t come w/ mandrake.. are they third party apps? I noticed you have the same problem Eugenia.

“8. Gnome + all it’s standard apps
9. Knoppix (so i cheated, this isn’t an app)
10. All standard tools (ls, cp, mv, mount, etc) and the bash shell”
Now these three are definitaly not third party apps 😛

Hehe. Well, with #8 & #10, they’re not part of the kernel. So I guess you can still consider them third party apps =D. With #9, Knoppix, I consider it third party since I use it as a tool for data recovery, migration, configuration, troubleshooting, etc. But that’s just me =D
you forgot the part about being applications
I’m glad that Abiword got a mention, but you missed out some other important ones:
Gnumeric, probably the best spreadsheet application in the world.
GnuCash, probably one on of the most comprehensive financial applications in the world (and I’m really looking forward to the imminent Gtk2 updates).
There are many others for Linux… some more obvious, some fairly subtle:
Screen, Rhythmbox, Vim, gThumb, Straw, and more.
On a final note, with the availability of Gimp for Windows, I wouldn’t have included Paint Shop Pro.
check 7-zip.
I posted for such a list some time ago. Thanks. I use OpenVMS and Linux at work and Linux at home and no Windows anywhere.
– jEdit – couldn’t live without it. It is even better than TPU on OpenVMS. Still, I miss TPU’s learn mode.
– Konqueror – I do not understand the bashing it sometimes is getting. I find it remarkable.
– ddd – again a bullseye. I know it is based on gdb. I beats the OpenVMS debugger by far.
– KMail – It’s ok for what I need.
– K3b – But I have not gotten it to work on kernel 2.6. I think because scsi-ide is broken and K3b cannot burn using cd-ide yet.
– TextMaker – I haven’t worked much with it yet. But it is lighter than Oo Writer and appears to suffice for the MS Word writing that I need.
– Digikam – Another one that looks very promising and but that I have not spent any time on yet.

I’m still meddling with Linux on the Desktop – I’ve always got another dev box at home that I switch over to (with my nifty keyboard/monitor switcher) but I’ll admit that there’s no apps on the Linux Desktop I need. (currently running SuSe 9.0)
Server side, however, my business absolutely depends upon Linux to function for the hosting of websites, email etc.
This is my “software list” for Windows in no particular order:
WinRAR

My little collection I could NOT live without:
Infoselect
TheBat! {plz fix the html bugs though}
WinAce

KazaaLite
PGP
*Any* Password manager (Oubliette at the moment)
MS office I suppose (miss Gobe..)

I’m surprise there aren’t many programs that are must haves for any OS. This is a bad sign for any shrink-wrap company left.
Linux comes with most of the applications mentioned and Microsoft is including alot of stuff starting with XP.
Anyways, my list really short.
Microsoft (windows xp pro)
1) Visual Studio 6
2) DotNet SDK
3) Java SDK
4) Eiffel Studio

2) Eclipse
3) Flash
4) Xine, VLC + codec
WOW, everything else comes with the distro. No wonder it takes me less time to customize linux.
20) Putty ssh client
21) Ftp client
“1. WinZip
3. Paint Shop Pro
4. GetRight and CuteFTP or FileZilla
6. mIRC
8. Nero
9. […] Opera”
Though i guessed a bit, these programs are to my knowledge shareware. I take it you are one of the ~30 people who actually paid for mIRC? Shareware essentially means you’ll have to pay for it after having used it for a certain defined period.
Wether you have limited functionality akll the time, at the time after the period is over or full functionality does not differ anything to this license. Shareware is “try before you buy”, after the period you either have to stop using it or pay for it.
Result is, a lot people are actually using ie. mIRC illegally.

If you installed Dropline GNOME (http://www.dropline.net/gnome) you’d knock of Xine AND Flash. But anyway, eclipse is pretty easy to install and eiffel is a relatively obscure language so your point about Linux/BSD in general being complete is very true.
It’s been a long time since I used windows and I believe that if I ever do some time in the future (very unlikely) that the list is likely to be at least as long as yours. I’m a Java DB developer also and things like MySQL, Apache, EMACS and NetBeans are absolute musts for me.

I can’t count the number of times I booted up a server with a dying disk, and only dd over netcat to backup the disk saved me.
It’s not a replacement for proper backup, but it’s a damn good idea.
And don’t forget to keep it in / filesysem. who knows if your /usr or /var will be toasted?

Regarding user apps, every box i have contains the magic combination of 7 — be it configured or not. Some are preinstalled, depending on the OS. Programs like “ls”, “mv” and “cat” are not added. Sorted on relevance:
* OpenSSH
* Screen
* Bash
* Links
* VIm
* Mutt
* Irssi
Though OpenSSH only would be enough as addon in most situations. I’m still trying to get OpenSSH and a kernel (any kernel) together on a floppy.
Without these programs, i live in huge pain. Java to be added soon…
Regarding X, it is much avoidable and not important. I could live with OGG123, Sidplay2 and Mikmod instead of Xmms and XSidplay. I could live with console or TWM instead of Enlightenment or XFce (there’s always remote X over SSH anyway). I could live with Xterm instead of Eterm. I could live with Links instead of Mozilla (Firebird). I could live with VIm instead of Abiword. Except for the list of 7, none of these programs are mandatory.
I don’t use Windows though i’m way not always behind my own computer. In the occasional situation it is unavoidable to use Windows i’d only need PuTTy and a One Time Password (OPIE, S/Key).
That’s it. And it still feels somehow over-indulged.
Try ALZip 5.1 ( http://www.alzip.com/ ). It’s free and provides the same functionality.

The thing windows needs most is a decent download manager and better archiving capabilities.
Anyway, here are a few more..

Linux & FreeBSD:
vim; xine; k3b; xmms; kdevelop; cfdisk; opera; octave; xchat; …
Is there a free product that I could use that is similar to remote desk top on xp pro. I’ve been using putty but I would like to be able to use my Linux desktop from my xp machine. Any suggestions

The only Free (Speech and beer) X11 program for Windows i’m aware of is Cygwin in combination XFree86. It wouldn’t surprise me at all when it is slow, though i do not have benchmarks — only a ~year old experience with XFree86 + KDE2.
On the other hand, there are also non-free (proprietary and commercial) X11 implementations which are ie. shareware. Several exist, just Google around a bit. I can’t remember which ones i’ve tried i do remember i couldn’t find a free one.
Just Google for ie. X11 Microsoft Windows or XFree Windows.

RE: dpi – minimalism till realism…
I don’t understand what the point of using a computer is for people like you who only work from the command line… Are you against innovation? Do you do things like watch movies, use digital images, view pictures online? Do you only have a 33.3k modem that prohibits you from actually enjoying your computer? I’m not trying to sound accuastory or anything, but seriously… why limit yourself so much when there’s so much more out there?

I’ve been using Edit Plus at work for the last 5 months. It has a column copy feature (using the mouse and alt key) that I’ve not seen in other text editors -or I’m just ignorant of them. It has other feature that are great also.

I am waiting for OpenOffice.org Cocoa to be released. Right now, I tend to use OOo from my Linux box via X. I find that the X version of OOo for OS X is not very responsive 🙁
Under linux I like to use:
1. screen
2. Mozilla Firebird
3. pan
4. gentoo (the filemanager)
5. xmms
6. gkrellm
7. OOcalc
8. gaim (I don’t actually like to use this )
9. vim
10. prozilla
These are all third party in a way under Gentoo, although I guess Everything is third party in linux except the kernel itself.
Good lists so far.
To the Unix/Linux list I would add Pan, which I think is the best newsreader I have ever seen.
As for the Dead OS Category, under OS/2 Warp – eComStation:
PMMail/2
PMView 2000
ProNews
The Graham Utilities (no relation)
Stardock Object Desktop 2.
I certainly agree.
Opera and screen would be difficult to do without, most certainly, as would nano (though if nvi supported syntax highlighting, it would do fine [elvis and vim are way too bloated]). Since I run FreeBSD, I love having portinstall.
Other apps that see a lot of use:
1. naim (a great IM/chat client without the bloat)
2. madplay (better compatibility and controlability than mpg123)
3. ssh (vital!) and sshd
4. rxvt
5. once in a while media apps: xzgv/qiv and mplayer
6. Some sort of window manager: IceWM works fine for full-screen apps, has good keybinding support, and has less bloat than most other WMs
7. top
8. Some sort of shell (bash or tcsh)
9. cvs/cvsup

Hmm i’ll try to explain my logic and show details. No offense taken at all.
“I don’t understand what the point of using a computer is for people like you who only work from the command line…”
First of all, i don’t only use the command line. I just stated the programs i can’t live without and use most; which are all CLI programs. Though my X is also minimalistic, it is irrelevant for me to do the things i need to do. It is, for me, not required to function and i far from always use it.
My main reason to KISS is i prefer to be independant of “bloat” as much as i can thus i learn more “spartanic” ways thus i am autonomous and enlightened when the “bloat” is not available. While these “spartanic” ways also give me several advantages. I’ve experienced the dependancy on GNOME/KDE and X when i was a starter; and did not like it.
This is from my point of view a reflection to society. Where many people want to have the best of the best, some have enought with less. I never have the feeling to need the best of the best, be it soft-, hardware or money-wise.
In the case you want or have to live with “slow” computers, there’s little choice for DE’s like KDE and GNOME (besides, i don’t like them, since they’re not minimalistic enough). Though if you’d like to run, i respect such choice for one reason: you have the freedom and diversity to chose by default — which i see that as a good thing.
“Are you against innovation?”
Not at all. I wish all Free software users a happy experience of their own. In the effort, i also wish the People progression, choice and diversity. My choice should not be forced upon others, while others’ choice should not be forced on me. Though i am a strong believer in Free software, advocate it, and am inflexible regarding that.
Regarding innovation and the programs i’m using, i find SSH is a brilliant innovation. Much better than what i used before that: telnetd+ssl. I find Enlightenment a brilliant innovation too though i’m not sure if i’ll use E17 when it’s out & ready. I think GNU Screen is an innovative program as well.
(And i can do things with E16 which are not possible with KDE)
“Do you do things like watch movies, use digital images, view pictures online?”
Yes. But tell me, aren’t these just “toys”? Isn’t that visual stuff just for “fun”? W3m has image support (i’ve used it a few times on OSnews), MPlayer can be used on console (-vo aa, -vo cvidix) and pictures can be viewed using FBI. Except for AAlib, this be with framebuffer.
This, and The GIMP, and BitTorrent (ncurses frontend), and all the X programs i’ve named earlier aren’t needed. The 7 programs i named are required for me. The rest -besides ie “ls, mv, cp”-, not.
“Do you only have a 33.3k modem that prohibits you from actually enjoying your computer?”
At home, ADSL. This is (at least for me) not correlated with running lots of resource-intensive software. I’ve ran KDE and GNOME years ago on 56k6.
“I’m not trying to sound accuastory or anything, but seriously… why limit yourself so much when there’s so much more out there?”
I see it as limiting myself, i prefer simple, versatile methods. What am i missing? I don’t feel like missing something. Flash? I miss that as toothpain, for example.
I’ve also noticed you putted up servers and the like. Except for OpenSSH i haven’t added that kind of stuff. I’ve rather viewed it from a desktop perspective. Servers follow the same philosophy though.
Well that’s it, i hope i gave you an interesting view.

Sorry to be back so soon. I can’t believe I forgot to mention Perl. I use ActiveState under Windows, and Ilya’s port on OS/2. The BeOS port of 5.8.0 has no Sockets, sadly.
BTW someone said they always install SVG Tracker when they install BeOS. Where can I get this?

…and of course Flash and RealPlayer, for both Linux and Windows.
Mozilla Firebird (usually some nighty build compiled with many optimisations)
GoogleBar (essential, for me, addon to Firebird. It has some features that you won’t find in original Google Toolbar. Don’t use the experimental version )
Foobar2000 (very, very good audio player – that does only what audio player is meant to do – plays audio perfectly)
Miranda (with jabber plugin)
Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/, with Quicktime Alternative)
Filezilla (fast and lightweight ftp client and server (separate, both share the same name))
7-Zip (yes, right now its file menager has terrible interface…but if you’re the kind of person that rather use context menus in explorer for archiwing tasks instead, you’ll find this application usefull perhaps (not to mention being able to use 7z format))
Ghost-It! (http://home.rochester.rr.com/artcfox/GhostIt/ has the ability to create “ghost windows” – the windows that not only are transparent and always on top, but your clicks pass through them. In some situations very usefull. Not to mention spooky )
Wackget (http://millweed.com/projects/wackget/ very light and unobtrusive download menager. Well, in realiy you can hardly call it download menager – it’s very, very simple. But I find it very usefull. Uses wget under the hood)
Slowview (graphics viewer. Don’t let the name mislead you, quite fast rather. I like it’s features, don’t like look of its menus, but overall it’s very good)
Sygate Personal Firewall
AVG Anitivirus
Soulseek
And one very good IM app usuable only here (but it’s part of the jabber…but app, though astounding for default IM service application (and I’ve seen a few…), is only available in my language)
Oh, and there’s also free (now – it’s an old version, but I consider it the best one – light, no skins) video player with simply beautifull subtitles. So it may interest you if you watch some movies with subs in separate files…
