Two weeks ago, Xandros Corporation announced the release of Xandros Desktop OS 2.0, which will be available for purchase beginning December 9. LWN has taken this opportunity to ask the recently appointed CEO of Xandros Corporation Andreas Typaldos about the product features, plans for the future and other topics of interest.
Canned responses. You can get the same information on the Xandros website.
his short period of time there.
Xandros Co. changed the release date of Xandros 2.0 from December 9th to December 16th.
I really can’t wait for this release, from their previous work I am betting it will be very polished and fast.
Ditto Alex. Xandros 1.0 was a pretty good product for use by either the home user or as a corporate workstation. I’m sure that 2.0 will continue to impress. I’m curious as to what this “wow” feature is that the beta testers keep referring to. If it’s marketed properly, this could be the distro that makes Windows users take a serious look at Linux en masse, which can only help the entire Linux community in the long run.
i would like to know how it compares to lycoris in terms of ease of use, package management, support, and does it vilidate the extra cost it will have?
Lycoris — KDE 2.x
Xandros — KDE 3.x
right there says enough for me.
So few comments makes me wonder what people think of Xandros. Personally I am looking forward to it and hoping it will finally be a Linux I can really like.
I’m one of the beta testers, and I was a long time user of lycoris.
Xandros is current, innovative, debian based so software gallore, and they have a ton of great developers. Bugs get fixed…yes, really fixed…the first time. And fast. Hardware support is the best I’ve seen in any distro. Further to that, Xandros Networks is incredible! People may compare it to Linows Click n Run, but it’s got a nicer feel, and doesn’t seem like a great big commercial that nags you to death.
Lycoris is old, doesn’t have many apps, and you can’t compile your own since it’s so old and the best new apps don’t work. Plus, they only have a few people actually developing it. I lost faith in the motives and future of Lycoris a while ago, and I don’t see any change in that.
Lycoris is certainly prettier, but you can at least use the coolest new themes with Xandros to fix that because it’s based on KDE 3.1.4. Plus, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? So who really cares…Xandros just has more of a corporate and professional look by default, though I haven’t seen the final look n feel, and won’t until it’s released.
Both distros work well right out of the box.
My money is riding on Xandros to be the next big thing. Just watch…..
I don’t like so called, “Distro Wars” they’re pointless. All based on opinions. In the long wrong, opinions can mean NOTHING at all. It’s all just a person’s experience. So asking if Lycoris or Xandros is better than other, well your obviously going to get biased results.
People constantly complain about the lack of KDE3 in Lycoris. Have many of you even tried Lycoris? I’ve tried both and as well have both Lycoris Update 3 and Xandros 1.0 installed. I use what works for ME, which it happens to be Lycoris works a bit better.
That’s all….
actually i was hoping for a less biased opignons really. I know they are both good, no dought, or else they wouldn’t have people swearing by it. However, looking at both distros screenshot(s), they have totally different look and feel. Now i really don’t care about kde2 or 3 as long as it is smooth easy to use. What type of package system does xandros use? I know lycoris has rpms. I’ve had experience with rpms and know what they are like and it’s good.
Xandros uses debian package. Lycoris uses RPMs, like you already know. I know you were looking for less biased opinions, but so far it seemed that that was all that you got.
