there is a hefty almost 200 MB kernel patch for all kernels, I just noticed via YAST online Update… I did applied and my system is still alive.
It’s far less then 200MB if you use the patch-rpms and not the full rpms. I still don’t understand why not every rpm based distro uses these. Saves a lot of traffic.

Tell me about it! Mandrake updates are HUGE! I’m on 56k dialup with a download limit and it’s virtually impossible to update my system. I keep it behind an ipcop firewall and turn off all services.
very efficient especially for 56k user. patch rpm is 5% size of the actual rpm of course. suse has it

That is a really cool idea.
what about ppl who use src rpm’s. those will/could break right? or when a patch has already been released for say ssh, does the new patch work ontop the old one aswell as patching both bugs on the original SSH.rpm?
Not necessarily, service packs and patches are good as long as they fix known bugs. I’m assuming that’s what SuSE is doing here. Where most of the time a MicroSoft service pack fixes some bugs, leaves most security holes open and adds new un needed features that usually open new holes. I don’t know if SuSE does the same thing but I doubt it.
