I’m displeased with http://www.ultraspec.com currently the only USA distributor. Their page has an ASP bug in the script, preventing users from seeing their page.
Also, they have a trade-in special for owners of Pegasos I boards to upgrade to a Pegasos II G3 1 GHz, but why not a regular option for first time buyers who want the G3 1 GHz model?
… yes this has been planned for Pegasos III which will probably depend on the Marvell Discovery III NorthBridge for the 970 and should be available somewhere next year …
… Maybe you have luck and ‘bbrv’ show up on this site pretty soon, they can explain more in detail … It’s their product and their company after all …
Not directly, but it does run under MacOnLinux. Apple does not care too much for folk to run their OS on other hardware, as shown by their EULA.
=========================================
UltraSpec was added as a reseller only yesterday, and has not updated their website as of yet to reflect their new status. I’ll check back and let all of you know when they are set up, and tell them about the asp bug, thank you for bringing that to my attention.
A customer can purchase something, but they can’t get any info on what they’re buying. Even wandering around the reseller sites, there is nothing of substance.
Sounds like Oceania to me.
This reseller doesn’t even have any info on it. Or anything else for that matter:
No, you are not building your own Mac. You are building a PowerPC box. There are other PowerPC systems out there besides the Mac, namely IBM’s RS/6000 and the Amiga.
Everyone’s correct. Mac On Linux will run it, but Apple has frowned upon that. If you are looking for a Mac to run OSX on, it’s probably a better idea to find a used Mac G4 and upgrade the proc, memory, and video. Proabaly would be cheaper that going new with a PegasOS board.
Advice: Get a can of DustOff, too. Mac’s seem to attract dust bunnies.
If you run Mac-on-Linux on it, then from the software perspective at least, yes, you’ll have built your own Mac. The hardware’s less pretty, but the price is right.
Some of the Pegasos resellers have been in business for years, generally as Commodore Amiga dealers; others are very new. If that particular reseller would be convenient for you (though with your pacnet.net ISP, I would think not), why not contact them at the email address they provide? If you are genuinely concerned, that would certainly be a more direct contact route than via this forum.
> The people are not pleased with the totally inadequate level of performance of Genesi/Pegasos.
I’m not sure what people you’re referring to, but clearly Genesi’s current customers (Pegasos G3 owners) are overwhelmingly happy with Genesi and their Pegasos. Inquire at any Pegasos user forum if you’ve been led to believe otherwise.
It doesn’t matter what storefront you choose for Pegasos. All lead to empty stores without product. Without even a price list. Without even a product description. A wasteland.
The simple rule for that which is real — if you advertise product, have product. Or even a sign saying “we know about product”. Somehow I don’t think a lone consultant, ages old website, cable reseller, or other vagabonds are going to have shiny new “Pegasos II” inside their dingy moth-eaten storefronts.
Next you’ll be telling me to go down to the corner and listen for the sound of the crack cocaine whistle. Then I can call out into the darkness for special Pegasos II?
> It doesn’t matter what storefront you choose for Pegasos. All lead to empty stores without product. Without even a price list. Without even a product description. A wasteland
Your reading should be as perceptive as your writing is imaginative. Look again at, say, http://www.pegasos-suisse.com/ or http://www.amigasuperbit.com/catalogindexsp/531.html . Hardly the bleak landscape you describe. As I mentioned, the Genesi reseller group is really just getting under way and several resellers were listed before they got their storefronts up. They should probably display some indication that they are Pegasos resellers, though, for the benefit of visitors who perhaps don’t realize they could contact them by email, and I’ll pass on that suggestion to them via the Phoenix consortiums’s resellers list.
> Next you’ll be telling me to go down to the corner and listen for the sound of the crack cocaine whistle. Then I can call out into the darkness for special Pegasos II?
Well, you could, but unless you select the corner very carefully you’re likely to be disappointed. In the meantime, I suggest you have a look at this website: http://www.fictionfactory.net/ . Your efforts might be better appreciated there.
I heard bsdrocks comment about the Marvell III chipset. Wouldn’t it be prudent to use an existing soluion such as a chipset form Broadcom, which can be used on conjunction with the G5 (stipped down Power4+ processor).
Something that would be nice is if Apple offered an ultra-uber workstation that uses the Power5 multi-core processor. IIRC, there is 4 cores per-cartridge. a dual Power5 multi-core would be perfect for ultra-high end rendering.
So Apple frowns on running Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware. But is there anything about the OS that would prevent it from running on this Peg hardware natively?
So Apple frowns on running Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware. But is there anything about the OS that would prevent it from running on this Peg hardware natively?
I would say it has more to do with the firmware than anything else. A while back there was a young lad selling PowerPC homebuilt kits for users who wanted to make a “Mac-compatible” computer to run MacOS X but with out the fictional “expense” that a genuine Mac would cost.
Apple heard about this and cracked down on the Motherboard producers. These motherboard producers no longer supply this guy with what he needs and hence, IIRC, he has stopped selling them.
IMHO, if I was Apple, I would have let it fly. If it were just a few enthusiasts then why worry? The guy was making next to no money off his hobby. Sure, come down on people like thunder if they’re trying to sell Apple clones without a license, but really, this person wasn’t affecting Apple sales in the slightest. btw, here is something interesting:
He was selling computers made with motherboards he got from Apple Resellers who were only supposed to use the motherboards to replace broken ones, not sell them seperately. They were therefore breaking their reseller contract.
I’m not sure what people you’re referring to, but clearly Genesi’s current customers (Pegasos G3 owners) are overwhelmingly happy with Genesi and their Pegasos. Inquire at any Pegasos user forum if you’ve been led to believe otherwise.
I have a Pegasos I, and I’m not completely happy about it,
I like the silentness, it does run linux but not all hardware features are supported (audio digital out)
I do not like the fact that it still doesn’t come with a networkstack for morphos even though it is advertised on their website.
The memory speed is appalling with the articia chipset
it’s a good thing they have replaced that with the pegasos II
And I don’t like the users who seemed to have missed the more recent hardware developments in the PC world, still whining about voodoo III, scsi drives and floppies.
We will be upgrading our website with more information. However at the moment the majority of our Customers are Small Businesses/organisations. A list is on the website of the services provided. Prices are not listed as generally we quote on request.
“Is it possible to install and run OS X on a computer with this motherboard, yes or no?”
No, you can’t run OS X native on this motherboard. OS X requires the Apple ROM to boot. The only way to “run” OS X at all on this is to do it under MacOnLinux, which isn’t the same and surely not as fast.
The reason I was confused is that everybody seems to muddle up the picture by mentioning MacOnLinux in the same sentence as Mac OS X, every time, carefully avoiding to say YES or NO.
(Am I the only one who doesn’t give a hoot about MacOnLinux?)
> USA distributor. Their page has an ASP bug in the

We are currently adding on new resellers every day. As they report to us that their sites are ready, we will add them. Ultraspec is not the only US reseller, but please keep in mind that they have only been a reseller for about 4 days. Their site is currently being upgraded to include Pegasos information.
> Also, they have a trade-in special for owners of Pegasos

Perhaps in the future, we will. Most people we asked however indicated that they would prefer to upgrade to the Pegasos II/1000.
Thank you for your explanation. And please forgive my impatience, I’m quite jealous of my European friends since they seem to have easier access to these products than I.
> is it possible to install Darwin os or open Be os?
Axel Dörfler is working on the OpenBeOS port for the Pegasos and said he wants to have it booting by the time of BeGeistert (this weekend). So, yes, OpenBeOS is well along. There are people working on a Darwin port too, but I don’t know what the status is.

Yes, there are a number of Pegasos resellers who put systems together for sale to end-users.

Again, I’m not sure. It would be best to contact Genesi (contact information at PegasosPPC.com). Also, I passed your questions on to a mailing list at Phoenix Developer Consortium so someone should either reply here or contact you directly.

I like the new website design, but I am not sure if it’s new. Last time I visit there like many months ago.
Have the Pegasos team ever think of planning to use Power5 (G5) CPU?
… yes this has been planned for Pegasos III which will probably depend on the Marvell Discovery III NorthBridge for the 970 and should be available somewhere next year …
… Maybe you have luck and ‘bbrv’ show up on this site pretty soon, they can explain more in detail … It’s their product and their company after all …
Is any possible way to run OSX native on this board?
That would be sweet.
Can’t find the board at all on the http://www.ultraspec.com.
The site works for me.
Can I find anything about the new Pegasos MB? No…
I hope that they get better resellers than this for the US!
Ultraspec appears to be a discount cable dealer to me…
>Pegasos I boards to upgrade to a Pegasos II G3 1 GHz, but
>why not a regular option for first time buyers who want
>the G3 1 GHz model?
There is no G3 1GHz model. You upgrade to a G4 1GHz not to
a G3.
Dual G3 or G4 would rock! Let alone G5 next year.
*technolust*

i sure am gonna upgrade my Peg1, G3 600 mhz, 512 mb ram to the Pegasos II, G4 1Ghz. Cant wait to get it. Looking forward to running MacOS X on it 🙂

The people are not pleased with the totally inadequate level of performance of Genesi/Pegasos.
At least Amiga Inc now has telescreen video for their cultware.
What exactly is this? If I understand this, am I looking at a PPC chip and motherboard so I can essentially “build” my own mac?
nope. It’s not parts to build a Mac.

A barren set of Pegasos II storefronts.
There is nothing in the window.
You go inside.
There is nothing inside.
Is this a place to shop?
Or to get chopped?

tank you very much!
to upgrade to dual processor you’ll have to wait the dual G4 card from
genesi.
G3 can’t be used in SMP mode
there is no way to use maccelerator cards in pegasos
