Shame; I was hoping to see these. I’m looking forward to trying Fedora out once it’s an official release. Unless people have found the RCs to be stable from experience.
Downloaded the isos from the duke mirror this morning, only half way through the upgrade process it is saying my CD is corrupted, now my RedHat 9 installation is more messed up.
Luckily I found out that my school has a mirror too, so hopefully I can pull everything within 1.5 hours.
1 thing I was wondering is that… why the time stamp on the files are Oct10? Wasn’t Fedora Test3 out only for a day or two?
Nearly every Redhat ISO I download ends up with corrupted CD’s. Anyone know why this is so? I don’t burn them any differently than other CD’s (Mandrake, FreeBSD) but always always always the Redhat ones will take 2 or 3 attempts to get a working disc. I have often thought maybe they do something to get you to buy their box sets.
I’ve never had a problem with RedHat releases (been d/l’ing them since RH 6.0). But, I couldn’t get a decent burn off of the fedora core set.
I’ve tried d/l’ing them 3 times, and cd 1 always burns corrupt. Don’t know why it is. I don’t think that RH is doing something shady, maybe the busier mirrors are sending bad data? My only guess.
I am re-trying a fedora download tonight, so hopefully it shall work.
I hear rsync can also check isos for you too to make sure they are not corrupted. Not a redhat specific issue. The install lets you check the discs anyway for a reason.
Well I’ve had a couple problems in the past. Just make sure that you do the cd check before installing. Usually a slow blank of a cd-rw and a reburn will fix any problems.
am i right in assuming that although fedora core will replace the redhat public version will all the future redhat entrerprise be based on them once they think its stable enough for enterprise or something ?
will it still keep settings the same as redhat ?? e.g configuration and stuff ?
Its good to post linux news. But before posting, you can take some decissions that will do good things to people like me. The fedora screen shots wht you hv posted are directed to a dumb titled webstite http://anyweb.kicks-ass.net. probably for those who are in west, this might be cool. Not for me ( indian) and to add to it, our insti rules ( stupid tho) which filter badwords for browsing.
May be i am wasting my time and some ATPs in typing this. But i think you are always welcome to such suggestions, good or bad.
Anyway i can understand your service to linux. But some how, this link doesnt seems to be nice.Ofcourse, you can always suggest me not to click it.
But it was my mistake too bcoz every time i click without seeing where the link is pointed to, untill unless there is a vulgar word for the link.
I am using a Russian-made laptop (www.roverbook.com) called Nautilus. Soft modem is from Smart Link, has Linux drivers (smlink.com). Video card is ATI Rage Mobility 9. All is compatible with this Fedora test3 release.
Will test the system more and bugzilla things to help the Fedora release in November 🙂 Good luck to all Fedora users.
Well I’m testing it right now and its pretty zippy. I’d say at least 2x faster than RH9. I really like it. There are still bugs a plenty around however… most notably the redhat-config-packages utility doesn’t work and packages from the cd’s must be installed manually. Other than that… graphically the release looks incredible. I really do hope though that redhat would just settle down and come out with a super stable version of something that takes a year to develop. Upgrading your OS ever 2 months is just not up to par and the amount of bugs in these OS’s is just too much.
I’m looking forward to the yum support in Fedora. Up2date is such a pain to use. I hope it will be possible to upgrade from 9 to fedora by just pointing it to the right repository.
>am i right in assuming that although fedora core will replace >the redhat public version will all the future redhat >entrerprise be based on them once they think its stable >enough for enterprise or something ?
Fedora Core replaces the public/community version, yes. The enterprise version will probably not be “based” on fedora, but it will use lots of components and experience from Fedora.
Settings/config applications are the same/better than before.
and it is cool! All together I fixed my openoffice problem too. It is not too different from RH, and I have to recompile the kernel to get everything working. May upgrade all my RH machine to it when the stable version is out.
Excellent, they’re including Rhythmbox (iTunes style jukebox) now.
I think the greater integration of 3rd party apps into Fedora will get me out of all the jams I get myself into my installing packages from all over the place. (No discipline!)
mp3/DVD etc will still have be 3rd party, but Fedora should lighten freshrpms load a little anyway.
Got it up and running last night, This is perhaps one of the more solid test distros I’ve seen in quite a while. Haven’t had any problems with it yet, and to me, seems quite snappy.

What do you mean by “in the west”? This employer here blocks the site as well:
click on the Red Hat, click Sound and Video, click ‘music player’. That is Rhythmbox.
at least it is for me, i installed everything, funnily enough a quick glance in add/remove applications, doesnt list Rhythbox anywhere that i could see, odd…
I installed test 3 and kernel 2.6-test7 RPMS from http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.5/RPMS.kernel/ on my HP Omni 6000, and rebooted, and was greeted with a 2.6 prompt. Those kernel RPM’s will work with the Fedora release, from my experience. The touchpad works as well, though it actually seems a bit too sensitive at times, but at least it works.
>> I didn’t notice any faster boot time, the graphical boot screen was nice though.
Ok…strange they haven’t implemented parallel loading yet, that should really increase the experience. I know at least OSX does it (don’t know about Windows)
(Read about it on slashdot a while ago, and realized what I have been missing)
I’m guessing since the link uses a dyndns.com 2nd level domain (kicks-ass.net) this person is probably running a small webserver on their computer.
Is there any chance of getting OSnews to mirror these, I’m already having problems reaching these and there aren’t any other comments.
The person who runs that server is aware of the limitations, he did the submission himself to me, and he has done so in the past as well.
The link is not working at all for me. Connection timed out.
I know. The site is running with 10 users per session.
Shame; I was hoping to see these. I’m looking forward to trying Fedora out once it’s an official release. Unless people have found the RCs to be stable from experience.
This might be a dumb question, but is Severn the name for Redhat 9? I think I might try RC3 but I only see Severn ISOs.
>but is Severn the name for Redhat 9
It is the codename for Red Hat 10, which is now renamed as “Fedora Core” and it is now community-based distro.
So if I download Severn I’ll be getting RC3, provided I check the ISO timestamps?
Thanks
When is the RedHat icon in the menu going to be removed?
Probably at the final… I expect it to be rebranded with new logo and stuff.

..if anybody contacts me. i can’t even get to the site right now. I have plenty of bandwidth.
..would help.
> When is the RedHat icon in the menu going to be removed?
According to their mailing list, the red hat will stay.
The reason? The hat is called a “Fedora”.

You may notice that the “RedHat” menu icon, is actually a Fedora..

as my isp/NAT obviously cannot cope, the webserver is fine, just getting to it is the problem, my isp keeps logging me out
sorry guys, contact me if you can host the shots, 14.5 mb in all, one rar file.

If anyone is curious, here is a screenshot from my Fedora .95 box:

Where did you get the quicktime skin for mplayer? That is really cool.

Surfcontrol Klassifikation: Adult/Sexually Explicit
So much for screenshots…
Thanks going to Mindwarp. Why OSnews can’t just copy the images to their own server instead of leaving them on some crappy dyn dns home server…
Ah nice, it uses the new refined Bluecurve theme (with smaller buttons)!
i’ve mirrored the site here:

http://web408.basicbox1.server-home.net/other/bist-du-bloe.de/linux…
(note: the pages itself are bad html and the errors happen because the creator linked stuff like screeshot.html instead of Screeshot.html)
http://bist-du-bloe.de
I have placed another mirror here.
I have changed the pages so that they should all work.
Let me know if there are any breaks.

hi all,
thanks to some very kinds people, here are some mirrors for the screenshots.
please use the following urls (instead of my extremely bandwith limited one).
Apologies to those who couldn’t get to see the shots, much kudos to P38 and Doug, these guys are just _so_ cool .

Where? I installed Test 3 this morning and couldn’t find it.
I don’t think that these screenshots deserved all the effort it took to get them posted. They look exactly the same as redhat 8 and 9.

How fast does it boot? Does it use minit/serel/make to load services in parallel, or does it still load services one at a time?
Faster booting (eg for us with laptops) and a graphical boot screen (using lpp or bootsplash) is crucial for making it a “true” desktop distro.
I didn’t notice any faster boot time, the graphical boot screen was nice though.
