It was Motorolas crappy managment of their semiconductor business that eventually resulted in Apple switching to IBM. Frankly Im suprised the spinoff didn’t happen sooner. Its been obvious that Motorola wanted out for over a year at least.
…much like Palm “intended” to spin off the OS branch into an independent company? Unless I missed some news somewhere, Palm is still one company, hardware and OS; the spinoff was held off because they wanted to wait until their numbers were better (to use sucess of OS licensing to make the rest of the company, hardware, look better).
Well I agree this should have been done sooner, for the good of the product line, if for no other reason. You can’t really simultaneously focus on Desktop and Embedded chips. One or the other must get priority otherwise…
It has been obvious where motorola’s priorities are: embedded. That is good for the company as a whole.
What I hope comes from this, tho I don’t beleive it will happen, is for the line to come back with cheaper chips. Fast is well and good, but I think I would rather have a chance at a cheap PPC setup. By cheap I mean sub $250 for mobo/chip. We can all dream
so what does this do to apple. skwirlmaster says that mot’s priority is on embedded chips. I doubt anyone would disagree.
Does SPS move further from apple and the desktop. Does apple buy the desktop rights of the G4 (not the embedded rights)? Does apple get another source. Ibm is one source. Most people want more than one source.
Why doesn’t SPS team up with apple and IBM and push G4 based linux machines. Apples role is shiping apple machines with the same chips and pushing into the corporate segment.
It has been for sale for a long while. Motorola couldn’t keep spending money to keep it open. They should have tried an employee purchase. At least give the people a chance to decide their own fate. They will get layed off for sure this way. Motorola builds much more than just the Power chips at these plants.
Motorola can’t even GIVE away buildings to the local schools. The schools complain it would cost more to upkeep the buildings than to build new ones. (? I don’t get that)
“Motorola can’t even GIVE away buildings to the local schools”
Motorolla tried this? That was a nice idea and a great tax write-off.
“cost more to upkeep the buildings than to build new ones. (? I don’t get that)”
Remember the old movie, “The Money Pit”? There would have been much adaptation to make the building suitable for classes, plus, with Motorolla’s cash flow (or lack of) I’m sure there were many things wrong with the building.
