A Singapore-based company claims to have created in operating system for mobile devices that can run software created for Windows, Linux, and Palm platforms. Called MXI, the OS “performs a sophisticated form of emulation that enables the non-native program to perform as smoothly and quickly as it would on its native OS.” It also includes a server-based component for connected devices that allows the heavy lifting to be performed on the server side. I’ll file this in the “I’ll belive it when I see it” folder.
Now if they can build a replacement for VPC
– Firm promises all-in-one-OS
– YellowTab announces Zeta
– GNU Hurd released soon
– Longhorn to be released next year
and so on … and so on…
Where are the *REAL* products that companies promise/announce since a long time
YellowTab announces since one year, GNU/Hurd since … well … a century or slighly more). Longhorn will hit the market in 2007 (I guess)
Yes, I will spend money in good and useful software, so GIVE IT TO ME. I won’t buy for announcements and promises!
In other news I heard that we will land on Jupiter next week…
No, not next week!
They land when GNU/Hurd is ready, it’s two or three weeks more ๐
Does it come with Duke Nukem Forever?
First, Elisha Cuthbert and Britney Spears fight over me and now this! w00t!
Another great news – Elvis is back!!!
“Does it come with Duke Nukem Forever?”
That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard in a long time. Completely forgot about that game.
Does it come with … AROS 1.0 ?
I’ll bet the device has a dedicated VNC connection to a Linux server, which has Wine and Copilot installed. In this way, the device will appear to be running Linux, Windows or Palm applications.
Maybe we got do a little game here… Guessing when software is released…
Welcome to “Guess When It Goes Gold!”
-Duke Nukem Forever
-Windows Longhorn
-Yellowtab’s Zeta
-GNU/Hurd
-Lycoris Desktop/LX Update III
and, the most recent addition:
-MXI
It runs on a fat remote server. I wonder why they don’t install X on their mobile devices … it’d be cheaper.
Btw, Torrey: my sincere condolences for having Britney Spears
wanting you.
-Duke Nukem Forever
Who cares?
-Windows Longhorn
2007, usable in 2009, when SP2 arrives
-Yellowtab’s Zeta
1 year after OpenBeos ist ready for production use
-GNU/Hurd
Didn’t they release last week? :-))
-Lycoris Desktop/LX Update III
Never, they will merge with MXI
and, the most recent addition:
-MXI
Never, because SCO will claim that they’ve used their IP, and will sue them to death.
Well luckily Elisha kicked her butt
When the handheld user runs a program, the bulk of the program’s execution takes place on the MXI server. Just enough data is beamed to the MXI handheld to allow the user to view and interact with the document. The document being acted upon–a text file, spreadsheet, or image–is not stored on the handheld, but on the server.
Someone already mentioned it, but this DEFINITELY sounds like VNC. Especially since it’s cross-platform.
vapourwaralicious to be honest
To be honest, and not to troll. when the f*ck is any of these so called products being released? Like Zeta? Omg, talk about german crap that we never gonna see :/
I am so damn tired of all companies claiming they have product X that will take over everything, reveal us form virus and what not?
Who can honestly belive in a company NOT updating their website for a month despite the fact that they have the best product there is (yellowtab)?
Gahhhh, leave me alone :/
“To be honest, and not to troll. when the f*ck is any of these so called products being released? Like Zeta? Omg, talk about german crap that we never gonna see :/ ”
Are you one of these “US forever” a**holes? Yes, YellowTab announces vapourware, but imagine where you would be without non-US software? KDE? German origin! Gnome? Miguel de Icaza is a mexican! Zeta? ok, vapourware, but german! Linux? Linus is from Finnland! Worlds leading Linux-Distributors (except RH): Germany (SuSE), France (Mandrake).
Need a few more examples?
Yes, keep your US-centric opinion an be fu**ed up with M$.
“Does it come with Duke Nukem Forever?”
Wow. Actually I remember a LONG time ago, Duke Nukem Forever and Diablo 2 were considered to two biggest vaporware in the gaming industry.
Now Diablo 2 HAS been released, and so long ago that it’s even considered an OLD GAME.
Really, what happened in the 3DRealm cubicles for those past 5 years ????
I think the real diablo2 still really is vaporware. Didn’t they just decide to take a patch for the original diablo and decide to retag it as diablo2 ?
scsimodo: errr…. I am from Sweden you silly ****! Check my host ffs!!

It’s not because Yellowtab is german, its because they are Liers and vaporm-f!!
Sick and tired of it, sorry

Btw, I use a canadinan distrubution, GNU/Linux Libranet!
Using VNC this would be no problem, run the apps in their native enviroment on three different servers and send the output to either a VNC client or a type of xterminal application with a PocketPC, Palm or Linux compiled client. I can use VNC to rconsole to a Netware server from my Palm computer, so it sounds like this is not something really new and exciting, unfortunately.
It seems that a client (so-called “Platform”) is need on your mobile device. This is their “OS”. Interesting their “OS” runs on top of the actual OS (be it Palm, Pocket PC or J2ME).
This “platform” communicates to a server that will act on its behalf and return results.
Action Engine and XML anyone?
>Yes, keep your US-centric opinion an be fu**ed up with M$.
Having a bad day? What about the post made you think it was US-centric?
I can smell the vapors from here!
If people want to run windows applications then fucking go and by windows! It makes no sense to me. There is a counterpart for all major categories of software on Linux that they have in Windows, but for a few. It is true games and some multimedia development software is severely lacking in Linux. But hey, developers have to get on board first. Too many are playing the game where they wait until users already want to use it, but that is when you have already missed the boat. “If you build it, [they] will come”, to paraphrase. And then there’s the whole SCO crap to wade through at the moment.
Maybe it’s not all a lie and they managed to create sort of a combined client that knows vnc/X/rdp, with a fat server that provides different OSs through vmware.
nothing I would want to buy the server for ๐
I live in Singapore, and it is a *small* country, (important) news spread easily here.
“Run Windows, Linux and Palm software on my MOBILE devices at near-native speed” .. yeah, sure.
If this product they’ve managed to come out with is really _that_ groundbreaking, I just thought that I would have heard something about this earlier from one of the local IT news source (either online or deadtree) instead of having to find out about it from OSNews.
Perhaps I’m just being ignorant here, but this smells vapourware all over the place. Probably it’s just some homebrew implementation of a VNC-alike system.
RIAA spokes person, Mr Iama Wanker has realised that the drop in record sales hasn’t been due to file swapping but due to crap artists and crap songs. The suggestion has come from him that maybe record companies should promote people with talent rather than people who look “nice”.
In all seriousness, I have heard these promises again and again and again. There was an Open-WindowsNT clone announced at one stage then there was the Java operating system then some other project.
I am with the first couple of posters; stop promising and start delivering. Stop giving promises before delivering. Just look at Windows 2000, they promoted the heck out of it then realised that they couldn’t deliver on some of their promises so they scaled back.
If there are any BSA wizkids out there, here is a hint. UNDER HYPE your product so then if you deliver MORE than what you have said then you are praised, also, by keeping the hype down you’re less likely to cause a feature rush at the last minute.
Maybe they’ve finished it, but it’s so darn good that they haven’t been able to stop playing it yet…
On second thoughts, maybe not. I did see some screenshots a while back. Not a patch on Doom3 / Half-Life 2!
