HP will be establishing a laboratory at its Beijing facility for Red Flag Linux developers to work with HP engineers, and will be putting together packages of HP hardware running Red Flag for the Chinese market, and perhaps other markets in the future.
Someone’s eventually going to comment that “Linux users are communists.” So I’ll just say it right off to clear the air. 🙂
Nevertheless, this sounds like a pretty capitalistic partnership.
You gonna love it, really !

Can’t wait to see what sort of DRM the Red’s put into their linux.
I’m not a commie.
hey, Anyone out there read Linus’s book called Just for Fun?
There’s a paragraph when he says he raised on a comunist family (apparently his father was a very political active person in his Universitys days..) and when US journalist came to visit him when he was still living in Helsinski, they saw a comunist flag (a gift from his father way back when) standing on his wall…
Lets accepts some facts, our (or at least mine) movement is based on comunism that works!.. not comunism that does not work as a political theory thing.
And if your are just another person claiming that cumunism is EVIL (as evil as Mr Bush’s bombs), then start reading more… in the end it could be fun.
regards

Your implying that Linus started the Open Source movement. Regardless, his father being a commie hardly makes him a commie automatically.
Most of the actual founders of the Free Software and Open Source movement are, if anything, libertarian in nature.
I think the surprising thing we should be getting out of this isn’t “oh, look, Linux is commie ha ha ha,” but rather “how ironic that Red Flag Linux is working with a bunch of captalists.” I don’t care what the Chinese call themselves, but anyone who calls the Chinese straight-up Communists have been living in a cave for a couple of decades.
Just a few facts so you weirdos out there can decide if you think Red Flag software is capitalist or communist or what.
Red Flag Software is a private company spun off from the Chinese Academy of Science’s Institute of Computer Science. I think the company chairman is a prominent academic in the Institute and Academy.
The company is funded by a couple of venture capitalist banks which were set up and run by the Chinese goverment.
So work it out guys meta-capitalism or meta-communism perhaps.
One of my colleagues who is Chinese has just returned from a month long visit home (his last visit was five years ago). He says the changes are amazing. Everybody has just so much stuff and in the cities the standards of living are approaching North American levels. In his home city Chengdu there is a about one car for evey four persons and the traffic is appalling.
Of course in the countryside they are a lot poorer but even there he says you can see the changes as you drive down the expressways (yes China now has more expressway than Canada) when you look at the peasant villages in the distance all the houses have satellite dishes on their roofs.
No wonder HP wants partners in a market like that.
p.s. Red Flag’s logo is really cute Tux waving a huge red flag !
It seems to me that the opensource movement is indeed LIBERTARIAN, NOT communist. If you want to sell open source softare for profit, you can do so provided you follow just a few rules which are almost a courtesy to the original author.
Want to see communism that works? It only works on paper. Nothing wrong with ideas, but show me ANY communist/socialist/people’s/Democratic Republic, or whatever other lie is used to cover for communism that DOESN’T HAVE an elite rich class that certainly lives better than anyone else.
Human greed & envy WILL NEVER BE ELIMINATED, certainly not by a revolution. It’s innate in our hunter gatherer innerselves. The Communist Ideal is a nice one, till you get mad that you work hard and your neighbor barely works at all and you get treated the same.
And where did people think HP was going to go when a gal from the typing pool took-over running the Corp ????
