Contiki is a usable (internet-enabled) OS for Commodore 64 hardware. System requirements for Contiki is about 20K RAM for the base functionality and about 50K for full functionality (desktop icons, web browser, web server, etc.) See the videos of Contiki in action.
I tried to download Contiki, but it won’t play with Quicktime.
why do people waste their time with this crap…commodore 64, come on….
“why do people waste their time with this crap…commodore 64, come on….”
I have some legacy apps that only run on it. Custom applications. And the graphics are still better than on Windows.
There is a new C64-compatable hardware solution coming over the horizon, the C1. Contiki would fly on that.
“why do people waste their time with this crap…commodore 64, come on….”
Because it rocks. Have you ever played Giana Sisters?

For the same reason some people like to drive classic cars even though modern cars are more comfortable, handle better, get better gas milage, have air conditioning, etc. It’s a nostalgic thing.
The same is true for computer users. I like to boot up my Commodore 64 once in awhile because it is the system I cut my teeth on. It’s the system on which I first learned programming. It’s the system on which I learned BASIC and also assembly language. So there is nostalgic value to it, just as there is for old car enthusiasts.
The SMB clone? I know that *I’VE* never played it! heh heh My only beef would be that it needs too buttons, so you don’t have to push up on the stick to jump. OH WAIT, I’ve never played it heh. 😉
too == two
Why do you waste your and our time with such and useless comment.
C’mon… cheer up and let people be.
( no hard feelings )

Question…. Why?
Answer…. C*Base, HPAVC…. Nuff said
I still have my keyboard & CPU in my bedroom somewhere. In my closet I think.
We used to have a C64 keyboard on the wall at my old job (as decoration). I was always tempted to try and jigger the cute ‘lil C= key off and replace the option… I mean Windows key on my PC’s keyboard.
It is good to see an OS written to run in under 64k.
Dos = 64k-640k
Linux Kernel = 4MB
Linux + X11 + Gnome = 64MB
FreeBSD = 8MB ?
FreeBSD + X + Gnome = ~64MB
Windows 9x/Me = 32MB
Windows 2000/XP/2003 = 128MB
Long-horn = 1GB ?
It is amazing how much memory an modern OS uses. But come
to think of it, I prefer Linux with X and Gnome then a memory effient text prompt. Contiki seem to have the best
of both worlds.
I am usually rather pragmatic when it comes to computer tech, but when they mention the good ol’ Commodores, that indeed turns something on.
I am a passionate old computer (old crap, says wife) collector and repairer/hacker. I have lots of these babies laying around, half of them broken, of course. Contiki, it’s a cool thing, but I am waiting for a polished port for the Nintendo NES. Got three of those, all of them working (fixed myself), and have been thinking for a long time of making the NES a computer with keyboard and some intelligence and interactivity.
Contiki is not just for Commodore 64s. It runs on other platforms as well, including x86.
In my opinion, Contiki is a brillant OS. It has a full GUI
that runs under 64K of memory!. I dont think its just about old computers. I think its about pushing technology to its true potential. I want to thank Adam & the gang for creating something that might inspire current & future programers to think about the what can be done with what they have.
Is there anyone that thinking to fork contiki and produce small 32bit or 64bit OS, maybe also with the addition of preemptive multitasking. At least we got contender to MenuetOS
Man this is so cool, and doesn’t have the bloat of all other OS’s. It is so efficient!!!
I think I am going to use it in my enterprise.
So does anyone know of any emulators that can emulate (bridge) real Ethernet? I’d love to fire it up in an emulator and mess around with the internet features just for fun.
good point i’d like to try the same
however, im more interested in Amstrad CPC versions of the same as i used to program for those products years ago when i was a young lad
even have some samples below
http://anyweb.kicks-ass.net/amstrad/index.html
winape allows you to run the programs but i have not yet seen or heard of an application that allows internet conevtivity via an emulator
it would rock !! connecting to irc or something and your os would show up as something z80 based lol
if anyone knows of one please let us know
cheers
