Rumors have been flying about new 15″ Powerbooks, and now we learn that Steve Jobs will be giving a keynote speech at Apple Expo 2003 in Paris on September 16. Though I’m sure it’s being saved for one of Steve’s “and one more thing” zingers at the end of the speech, it’s pretty likely that new 15″ Powerbooks (still with a G4, but with illuminated keyboard) will be released.
What happened to the big 17″ powerbooks – the one that Mini-Me was holding in the promos? That looked pretty sweet (esp. for me since I’m half blind and laptops have been out of the question this far for that reason), but I’ve never actually seen one ?
People have them. I think you don’t see them as often because they’re so damn big that people lug them from home to work, but aren’t as likely to carry them to Starbucks. I think they really were intended to be Portable computers that are comfortable to use everyday as opposed to the kind you carry around with you everywhere.
What do you mean what happened to them? They are the top of the line powerbooks currently for sale:

The focus is on the 15″ because it was not updated to the aluminum powerbooks when the 12″ and 17″ were updated in January. So, the 15″ is overdue for a refresh.
THis site sucks ass….soemthings get mod down while others don’t…….give me a friggin break…….I think things get mod down when the financial providors (M$) complain.
I modded down a whole section of off-topic Mac vs PC flames. Some things get modded and some things don’t because modding is done by people. Sometimes we see something, and sometimes we don’t. If you want something to be modded down, email us. FYI, we have never modded anything becasue any advertiser or vested interest compained, especially not Microsoft. Like they would care, anyway.
sorry buddy…..but look at the Longhorn thread from yesterday……there is a guy talking about fucking his dog in there……was that modded down…..I think not.
Did you read what I said? Sometimes the bad posts are caught, and sometimes they’re not. Please email us if you find anything you think needs attention. I’ll go check out the longhorn post now.
Maybe you can add a “report this post to moderators” link to each comment. Just sort the comments according to “number of reports”, and you can pretty quickly filter out the trolls/offtopic posts.
Where can I get my 8 inch, 6 inch, and 4 inch laptops? I may have to switch to some other OS.

Maybe OS News moderation should be more like os-News moderation (note the hyphen). Users moderate rather than moderators.
While we’re on the subject, OS News Should give more creedence to contributions from readers rather than having a handful of editors do it… coincidentally like os-News.
Users submit news, thaey rate news, they moderate news etc etc etc…

I hope Apple pulls something nice out of that hat versus the expected which will be aluminum case and features from the 12″ and 17″ PowerBooks. The illuminated keyboard is expected as is the Airport Extreme and the FireWire 800. I hope USB2 will be included but it won’t be a biggie if its not. For video I hope they throw in a mobile Radeon 9200 or 9600 but its not likely.
The whiners and haters should take their anger over Apple somewhere elsewhere. Its a product announcement I don’t see why people get all hot and bothered whenever there is Apple news.

Take this crap somewhere else.
If you like os-news then go there. I hope they mod both of these comments down.
On OSNews, only happy shiny comments are encouraged.
Any sort of reality or criticism, especially if it is against a corporate advertiser or special interest of the owners and editors of OSNews almost always gets modded down or deleted.
Are the editors of OSNews saying Apple doesn’t overhype their computers? Or that Steve Jobs is not known for his Reality Distortion Field? Or that there isn’t a controversy over Apple’s calling their new computer “the fastest desktop computer”? Using CENSORSHIP to defend Apple in the face of what the world overwhelmingly knows and accepts as true is pathetic. It doesn’t make any NEWS site better, especially one that makes claims about being open and unbiased. Claims that are so obviously fraudulent.
And any company that doesn’t listen to its users is certainly not long for the world. This site could be way more fun if it wasn’t run by heavy-handed and obviously hugely biased people. If you look at the topics and messages, it is becoming clear that the site has lost vitality.
Lastly, allowing Mike Bouma to post his vaporware on OSNews for the past two years just makes OSNews look like a donkey market. It really is a tremendous double standard to have yet another OSNews corporate player given editor powers and then he deletes many comments that conflict with his company’s interests. What sort of “NEWS” is that? Why does this guy have such power? Is he an investor at OSNews?
Time for OSNews to decide who they want to be five years from now. A little news site run by biased and spitty editors/owners or something a bit grander, where there is a vibrant community of users.
Would be niiice. They have the PPC 970 processor, and it’s not that powerconsuming and it’s pretty cool if you compare it to a P4 or AMD chip, so why not put it in the new 15″? They have to update the processors in the PB line sooner or later. A new keyboard, aluminum shell and maybe a .2Ghz update to the processor isn’t that exiting..
Will he speak in French?
It would be very nice. I think it has been shown however that the major advantage of the G5 over the G4 other than MHZ is bandwidth. The G5 Altivec core is an older version. So as a mobile processor the G4 or an improved G3 would be ideal. The G4 bus is slow so if they can bump that up it would be nice.
Apple news makes OSNews.com, just look at how much traffic these articles get. I’m guessing but most of the Apple stuff gets 100-200 post. I guess Apple causes people to think alot,,,,,,,,,maybe that should be there company sayin instead of “think different”!
