The official project for the replacement of the SkyOS GUI, the SkyOS GUI Design Contest, is now underway. You may view the current submissions at the website here. If you would like to contribute a design, please read the instructions on the first page of the site. Submissions will be accepted until September 8th. At that point, the designs will judged in an open community vote. The top 3 designs will move on, and will be judged by the designers, the community, and Robert (creator of SkyOS). The new GUI will appear in SkyOS v5.0. Update: The site’s earlier bandwidth problems have been solved.
i designed the Aquaris series of GUI’s on the contest page at the moment only V2 and Titania(v3) are up hopefully ill get v1 & the other pics of v2 & v3 up soon
I did both the Cube and X-GUI designs. Currently, Youlle and myself are the most active ones. Feel free to submit your own design, per the rules on the front page of the contest site.
I really, really like the Aquarius GUI.
This is shaping up to push SkyOS into the realm of usable OSes; the new 4.0a release is looking mighty fine as far as usability, and these GUIs look like the perfect polish to what’s shaping up to be an awesome lil OS.
Aquarius happens to be the best GUI submission, so far.
It’s just unfortunate that none of them appeal to me at all.
I hope there will be more submissions.
and i win lol, nah votin aint started yet, vargasan tell us wht u’d like to see in a GUI and well try to incorperate some of what you want into the gui design
Instead of posting this for operating system geeks, why not submit this to deviantart.com, etc. for graphics geeks?
but its going to be used by Os geeks and comp users at the moment, there is no design software for SkyOs also designers tend to be fixed minded about how things should be (wow, u figure somet out about ur self everyday lol) also skyOs GUI is part of an Os its not just a design, which will never materailise into anything else, and which one do you like lol
I like Mark’s desktop the most. I think it’s the best “framework GUI” for SkyOS, so forth. At least, from those that are on that site. It’s minimalistic and yet good looking. Just a little bit polishing for the taskbar/applications -menu and it’s close to divine
The rest look like WindowBlinds/LiteStep themes, more or less. And have all kinds of things, that I don’t like in a GUI, like 45 degree corners, for example. The last one, although looking horrible has a good idea – “tree model” for hardware (yeah, this is also in bunch of other OS’s like MacOS X for example). It would be good, if SkyOS would implement that to their operating system.
Anyways, keep on trying
“for SkyOS, so forth.”
What I was meaning to say was “for SkyOS, so far.”
I really only wanted OS people to take part in this, because we want to emphasize functionality over appearance. Once we have decided which design to go with, we will get a talented artist from somewhere like deviantart and help them polish off the design, work on icons, installers, etc.
I really like what everyone is doing from the aspect of a good looking GUI, however I don’t think I’d find any one of them usable.
My main interest is the menu shown in http://www.nathanpalmer.com/skyos/album05/x_gui_noborder as it draws from a pet like of mine – the right (however in this case middle) click menu.
I would, however, add a taskbar to hold the active applications, and maybe a quick launch area type thing. The small icons in the top/bottom right areas of the screen are hard to reach, and will potentially be covered by an active application.
The implementation of the ‘X-Menu’ could also be improved. As it stands, the options are only on the left hand side of the X. I would alter this to offer options around the circle (like with a mozilla plugin). The menu items associated with that option should then fold out from that direction – hence minimising the amount of cursor movement has to do. If my photoshop skills were half as good as you guys’ then I’d have a go at a mockup, but I honestly believe providing the menu system through this option would be an excellent way forward for the SkyOS.
One thing about middle buttons though….hardly anyone I know has one, or uses one (the scroll wheel button in most cases).
Hi,
I think a combination of the clean, simple interface of BeOS, and the polished, beautiful look of MacOS X would be perfect.
Here are some things I really like about BeOS:
-snappy response
-sliding tabs (I use this alot)
-drag -n- drop
-right-click on the desktop, and I can start navigating the filesystem.
-nice itegration of the bash shell and Tracker windows is possible (you can open a tracker window on a bash directory or a terminal window from a Tracker window)
-Unified, clean look
-stays out of the way of the user
MacOS X:
– looks great!
– love the brushed aluminum look
– Network shares (even simple ftp connections) show up as mounted volumes on the desktop
– I love the Dock. I like to scroll through my Dock just for fun.
Those are just some very quick thoughts. Keep up the good work on SkyOS.

Hi,
the most interesting one is Eye Candy GUI, the OpenGL one. Although it isn’t nicely drawn, it’s author puts forward some nice ideas. The graphics could be done later. At least this one isn’t boring. It wouldn’t gain popularity among common desktop pc users, but geeks should be interested by it. It could shape some nice novel ideas. Good luck!
I thought she wanted to design a whole new GUI. Where is she now? She’d better take part – I liked some of her ideas. Plus unlike Aquaris, they weren’t so obtrusive. Come on, girl. You know you want to
She’s on vacation.
>> the most interesting one is Eye Candy GUI, the OpenGL one. Although it isn’t nicely drawn, it’s author puts forward some nice ideas. The graphics could be done later. At least this one isn’t boring.
Read this sentence a lot of times and it will suddenly make you ROTFLOL.
Ya man, graphics can be done later.
(hehe )
(whahahah )
(sorry, smoking too much weed or so I guess – Amsterdam is a fine place )
what ever GUI is chosen it will b OpenGL driven so wht is the point of sayin “oh i like tht OpenGL one”
Shame on you for pointing out this misunderstanding

this shows up in IE 6 …

I’d appreciate it if you’d stop to portrait the Netherlands as a country where everyone smokes pot all day. It’s as stupid as saying that Americans kill eachother all day, that Germans command eachother around all day and that the French sleep with their maîtrasses all day long.
Anyway, on SkyOS: Hex, I’m still with your cube design. It could use some less extravagant colors (use white, grey and light blue or something), but I think it’s the most functional. I do need a right-click menu though (can’t work without one, I’m used to LS and Talisman).
Send in more designs please!! I’ve been into the GUI design contest from day one, and we need more choice!
I’ll be handing one in soon, first of all I’m waiting for the site to come back up though.
I’ll be working on one as well, as soon as it returns!
>> To Rick:
The name is Rich, not RicK (I guess KDE is the desKtop to blame here..)

Goed, ik zal het voortaan wel over tulpen hebben ipv die andere troep.

You’ve probably been smoking too many tulips from Amsterdam.
Okay, this is getting off topic..
Scotty, beam me down!

Serious:
I can’t access that SkyOS website anymore: “Bandwidth Limit Exceeded”
/me votes for the pic with the clock (by Mark Whatever, I believe)
“Bandwidth Limit Exceeded
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.”
You know, the one with the blank page saying ‘bandwidth exceeded.’ I mean what is the point of a contest where no one can see the entries. I guess the competion may have proved more popular than was first imagined.
Q
You naughty you..
“Bandwidth Limit Exceeded

Hey Nathan, I have a lot of extra bandwidth this month and the next few…
I’d appreciate it if you’d stop to portrait the Netherlands as a country where everyone smokes pot all day. It’s as stupid as saying that Americans kill eachother all day, that Germans command eachother around all day and that the French sleep with their maîtrasses all day long.
Don’t we all love stereotypes?
Hey how about we paste the OSNews description (in quotations) of this contest on DeviantArt, with a link to both OSNews and the contest’s homepage? (kinda the format they use on DistroWatch >http://www.distrowatch.com<).
Won’t hurt to have the more geeky DeviantArtists throw some ideas in, as long as they know that the GUI’s primary goal is to be practical/efficient.
Don’t we all love stereotypes?
True, I like Pioneer stereo’s 😉
Anyway, IMHO, people are getting way to precious when some one takes the piss out of them or their country. Heck, I am a NZ’der over in Australia, could you imagine the number of sheep jokes and references I get on a daily basis?
A gui design contest is an awesome idea! A way to flesh out ideas, consider new possibilities, and allow for people to tweak other people’s designs.
I submit to you (the contest) this idea:
http://slicker.sourceforge.net
Previously discussed here before – http://osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2385. It appears the development for the KDE/Linux version has stopped. Which is too bad, I really would have liked to take this one for a ride. Perhaps SkyOS could pick it up!
The reason I like it, is because it’s not too radical of a change from the gui’s found today, it adds some flare and finesse (presumably without taking too much of a CPU hit), it’s themable, and is quite extendable.
Slicker is currently… gone? Sourceforge is currently… gone? Maybe if they had relied on a real operating system…
Sorry guys.. I didn’t realize this was posted yet. I had a 1000meg bandwidth limit.. and it used 2200!. But I increased my bandwidth limit to 17,000. I hope it not too late.
Nathan Palmer
I really like the slicker idea. I was watching that project for a while. The idea was good.. I wonder if we can contact the creator(s).
Nathan Palmer
I also agree that its not drawn very well, but the ideas are very good.. I
is the one I prefer. Man it’s beautiful!

http://zephc.2y.net/skyos/skyos5_mockup1_zephc.png
my explanation: “The GUI is fairly simple, and based somewhat on both the Mac and NeXTSTEP GUIs. THe file manager is actually based on a file manager I’m writing for OSX (with PyObjC, its still under 800 lines of code). It doesn’t have desktop icons, as a good file manager with access to drives and favorites as seen here. It also uses a menu that would be functionally equivalent to NeXTSTEP. It also has a dock that is hidable (clicking the triangle, or you can drag it in and out from the side of the desktop with the grab tag. It’s somewhat lesss eyecandy, but very functional and still stylish without being garish.”
Also, the thick line design makes it visually unique, IMO.
Hey Zephc, thanks for the submission. I added your design. Its the first design to make page 2. =)
DON’T FORGET THAT THERE ARE NOW MULTIPLE PAGES EVERYONE!
Thanks a lot for getting right on the bandwidth thing. You ‘da man! =P
wow, the tab things on slicker are like the dock tab idea at the bottom of my mockup, but I came up with the idea pretty much independently, though based on the OS9 control strip idea. Mine sort of a mix of that and the NeXT dock. I’ll probably post more, with other minor changes.
I like the slicker idea, with lots of different components… i had a UI idea once where entire app windows could be docked along the bottom or sides of the desktop view, like the OS9 Finder windows tabbed along the bottom.
that other really slick ideas like Exposé in Panther (OS X.3) would be nice for desktops cluttered with a lot of windows from many apps
Am I the only one that thinks posting this to deviantart is a bad idea? One of DA’s most active communities is their skins community. Do we really want a design that resembles a winamp skin rather than a clean, professional os?
I for one, don’t.
I’ll be submitting my entry as soon as I get arouund to it. Been damn busy lately.
I’m sure you’re not the only one.. And no, there is nothing wrong with people submitting any kind of skins. It’s not like the operating system is going to be forced to use a GUI layout that they don’t like.
[i] Do we really want a design that resembles a winamp skin rather than a clean, professional os?
I for one, don’t. <i/>
I for one do
I like Veda the best so far, but I would like to see more of it such as scrollbars, buttons and etc.. 🙂
I’d rather use Windows 3.11
I like Cube more than others. It seems to be a really functional GUI. It’s not just another copy of another GUI, it has best things of all other GUIs put together.
Nice work SkyOS guys. I think I will give it a try once reaches 0.5
Oh well, does it run on x86? I’d better check it’s website, I’m becomming curious.
The more to choose from the better. Tell wincustomize.com and customize.org as well.
for a grand total of three, they should show up sooner or later…. in case anyone is interested
I also submitted one. It can be found at http://www.dmrtc.net/~kvnrvn/sky/page1.htm
until it is added to the site. There are two pages.
your TITLE has it listed as mine, you might wanna change that
Sorry zephc. I changed it. I just stuck it up there temporarily. I just copied the page and changed a few things. I didn’t get all the references to you out.
Kevin: your design is COOL! Such kind of task-switcher is what I have always wanted, and the “progress” bars and the button look great.
The only thing I don’t kike is that the window decorations look a very much like those of Windows XP.
Everything seems to be easy to see on the screen at a glance.
Hope it makes it through, took way too much time to make to be fun there towards the end so it’s kinda half done. Should be listed as “Wind” if/when up.
Kevin: your design is COOL! Such kind of task-switcher is what I have always wanted, and the “progress” bars and the button look great.
Thanks!
The only thing I don’t kike is that the window decorations look a very much like those of Windows XP.
Actually, the buttons are XP’s, but the titlebar is original.
Wow!
Sorry Hex, but I’m with the Veda design now… Looks similar to my (heavily skinned & themed) Windows desktop.
Hey, no hard feelings??
I’m partial to Cube, and to Kevin’s. Mark’s is pretty nice, too.
The aquarius one could be ok, but the screenshots make it seem a little more daunting than the others.
Great idea for a contest though!
http://www.nathanpalmer.com/skyos/albums/album09/Jadu.jpg
It seems most professional to me. I think with a number of different colours schemes would also be nice.
Although this would also make a nice winxp theme.
Wind UI :
http://biphome.spray.se/lowspirit/SkyOS%20GUI.png
UI Designs seems to be popular to be named after elements (aqua, aero) so it’s that with a twist so don’t diss the naming =)
http://www.nathanpalmer.com/skyos/albums/album09/Jadu.jpg
That’s good. Very professional, I like it but the title bar should be smaller and a single row, not double.
I find it funny too see how much of these GUI’s are (heavily) inspired on existing GUI’s, namely the win xp and mac os x GUI’s.
Be careful with that, as there may be some copyrights and stuff involved!
http://home.earthlink.net/~agildehaus/skybox-035.jpg
Here’s a preview of what I’m working on for submission. It’s a combination of a lot of GUI’s I’ve found to be useful and attractive (mainly QNX’s Photon, Aqua and Be). Keep in mind it’s not nearly finished … much to flesh out and think about yet … but the windows and widgets are coming along.
Give me comments!
I hope some of the newer ones use some unconventional GUI concepts.
Also, Aquarius is too colourful, and too large, just to offer some constructive criticism. Otherwise it offers some nice ideas, although perhaps too like Windows.
Why is nobody copying the MacOS method of menubar at the top? That’s one of the better GUI concepts of the current back catalogue IMO.
Still I’ll be very interested to see the outcome of all this.
I had the idea for Veda for a while and only spent like an hour putting it together for this. I might update it to show some scroll bars and check boxes and such, but I kinda got the impression that this was more to design the usability than the actual ‘look’ ya know? That’s why I focused on showing the dock and how it’s a hybrid that acts like the OSX dock with a button that acts like the start button and the “my computer” merged into one.
I just don’t see the point of having icons for My Computer on the desktop (though if some one prefers it, it could be easily put on there them selvs), because to get to the My Computer icon you have to first click to minimize all windows (a button on the lower left of the screen) and then you have to navigate to the top left of the screen to get what you want. What a waste of time
Here is an idea of mine:
http://members.lycos.nl/daang/mockup.png
The idea was to create an efficient interface. Thus no windows with title bars and decorations. With a full-screen application, you have a better overview over what you are doing.
There is a bar on the left with all kinds of functions, such as the menus of the application, the start menu, the toolbar, a task switcher and context-sensitive help.
It was the intention to use screen corners and edges as well as possible, therefore the SkyOS menu is in a corner. An application can also place one toolbar button in the other corner. For the rest are all objects in the bar at the screen edge. Finally, the scrollbar of the webbrowser is at the edge too.
It is still black and white, I know, but I wanted to concentrate on the layout first. It should not be too difficult to use bitmap themes, for example.
that is a good idea, but not all apps are full screen. Any messenger client comes to mind, and having lots of stuff side by side is SO useful, like for coding… i keep tons of windows open side by side all the time.
Maybe you are right, how about fullscreen-maximisation, thus with either lot’s of windows on the desk, or if you maximize one, with a little icon in the upper-right corner to restore?
you might want to check out the Ion file manager, http://modeemi.cs.tut.fi/~tuomov/ion/#screenshots
It basically tiles all the windows in (i guess) an intelligent manner, moving them around when one is closed or opened (again, I guess)
they seem to be slow adding new ones, so all of mine (4 so far) are here:
http://zephc.2y.net/skyos/
#4 is the the most sophisticated, I guess; I added close buttons to tear off menu, and made the background image more interesting (if a bit loud 😉
Here is a screenshot how my idea would be for a windowed system:
http://members.lycos.nl/daang/mockup2.png
Some time ago I have tried LarsWM, an “intelligent” window manager, seemingly something like ion. It was really a hell, because if it doesn’t detect something well it displays windows too large or too smal, and as it’s automatic you can’t correct it. So not a good idea.
Other than mine (heheh) i love the Wind design that was posted on the last page and I dig the SkyBox
Hello everybody.
I’m not sure where Hexydes is right now.. so any of these designs that I have seen posted here and you want to put on the contest email me or IM me the info and link and I will put them up.

Finally, to see a sample how a 3d appearance might look like on my interface, a third and last mockup is here:
http://members.lycos.nl/daang/mockup3.png
Hey daan, I like the fact that you are Dutch, but could you put some more color into your design? My eyes hurt
Nice work though, I like the PhotonGUI-like sidebar!
Looks like the slicker website is back up (sourceforge?)
http://slicker.sourceforge.net/
Hey everyone,
Sorry I didn’t add them faster, I was out all day. Good work on Nathan’s part, and I added the rest that popped up. I moved some around, and they are in order of how they have been posted, I think. For now that’s easiest for me to arrange. If I get time, I will arrange them alphabetically….but we’ll see.
Anyway, great work everyone, thanks for all the contributions, they all look great!
Hexydes
The Wind UI is fantastic. Although it takes alot of elements from various UIs out there, I love how the task tray at the bottom is, and the notification bar. The top justification of the SkyOS menu makes it look very stylish, but very OSXish (No problem there, Aqua is probably the most flashy and beautiful UI out there). Overall, I say Wind gets my vote
Yeah, as a ‘contestant’ myself, I still have to say Wind UI gets my vote!!!
You’re themes are both awesome – you should combine them!
IMO Lowspirits screen edge tabs and menu are awesome, but Androo’s widget and window border are cleaner. I hope both of you read this and consider…
http://www.nathanpalmer.com/skyos/albums/album09/Jadu.jpg
It seems most professional to me. I think with a number of different colours schemes would also be nice.
Although this would also make a nice winxp theme.
Love the menu, however, IMHO, I personally don’t like the blue. IMHO, a colour something similar to:
R 25
G 83
B 122
Also, remove those the stripes, they’re too gaudy for my liking.
Man, Wind is beautiful. My only complaint is a lack of window handlers (minimize, maximize/restore, close) but otherwise VERY pretty and functional.
….leading to something like http://www.artselectum.com/SkyosGUI.jpg
I agree, I really love that as well. It reminds me of slicker.
As I said before I also like http://www.nathanpalmer.com/skyos/albums/album09/Jadu.jpg
Those two I believe would make this OS very professional looking.
If you build it, they will come!
Field of Dreams (keVin CostNer)
Here’s my proposal:
http://www.artselectum.com/SkyosGUI2.jpg
(I know colors need to sync better in all elements, especially with the pager)
Why not do everyone one better and support skinning directly, rather than making everyone choose their favorite?
i for one am in love with X-GUI http://www.nathanpalmer.com/skyos/album05/x_gui_noborder?full=1 . atleast X-MENU anyway. it a wonderful idea and it will keep you screen clear of menus and documents that take up valuable screen space.
and hte coment earlier in these coments about adding a taskbar like feature instead of having everything in various corners, why not just have a taskbar like featire apear when the middle button is pressed or have all the items in the corners brought to the top when it is pressed.
jsut my $0.02
i forgot something. i dont know if this is implented or not (i just downloaded 4.0a today, i finally got some x86 hardware) but a feature that i abosuletly miss from mac os 9.x and below is the collasping title bar. that would be a great addition ot any os…
if you’re talking about window shading (as seen in my Persephone theme on the contest pages), it’s in OS X also in an add-in, google for “Windowshade X”… I use it all the time.
http://home.earthlink.net/~
Did a little bit of work on SkyBox tonight. Added a couple widgets and did some refining. SkyTunes is coming along, it almost looks like a functioning app now. Also added a SkyBox version of the screen-edge tabs found in the Wind UI (suggested by ealm).
Note that minimize, maximize and close buttons are not on any of the windows. This is on purpose. Such functions would be available by clicking the SkyOS logo at the top-right of each window, but I’m working on a task manager that would be the preferred method of managing windows. I’m open to arguments about that one.
http://home.earthlink.net/~agildehaus/skybox-038.jpg
Funny… on an alternate OS that want to be far from Windows and Apple! On mine I feel I will add something from MS
(I want one too)
Strangely enough, nearly all the deskstop are taskbar based. Not that it’s a bad thing… just proove that it’s a great concept.
And yes it’s strange that no one has explored the side of a menu finder ala Apple. Dunno how it work since I never really use a mec, but look interesting(although a better dock can suffice me)
is functionally similar to the Shelf on NeXTSTEP, but can hold way more items with less desktop space, plus it can be hidden, yet is available on any file manager window.
I would like some feedback about it, but people just seem to be skipping over it all together.
I believe in simplicity at a fundamental level, and thing that most of these other ideas can be done better or more globally. Like, if I had my AIM window open, it could tab it along a side or the bottom to keep it out of view unless i needed it.
Adding Exposé like functionality could make a very complete and powerful yet straight-forward interface.
Feedback? Anyone? 🙂

Your desktop “Persephone” looks good, clean and really alternative. Why did you submit a similar “Zeph’s Desktop” instead of collecting all views to one and only?
On the other hand I would prefer a desktop with a menu bar for all apps as in MacOS and Atari mixed with the possibility of full-screen windows.
regards, Ludwig
hmm Mars Volta… Definatly a good choice 🙂
Regards

actually, they were supposed to delete the Zeph’s Desktop one, that was the first up there, the Persephone one has all 6 i’ve made so far, the former has just the first.
as far as maximized windows, there’s no reason it can’t, that button exists on the window
I really suggest you play around with the menus in NeXTSTEP or with GNUStep (since it’s more readily available) so you get an idea of how great tear-off menus are. I seem to recall GNOME uses then too somewhat. Maybe a Mac-like menu bar across the top with tear-off menus…
some of these GUI/Mock-up designers dont seem to have ever used SkyOs because well there file structures look nothing like, SkyOs’s system of /boot /fat0 /cdfs1 /cdfs2 /umfs this isnt such a bad thing but they dont understand how skyOs acts and works with certain apps, which isnt always bad but in this case i think an understanding of skyOs is required im not tryin to sound pompus but i think alot of the designers just want to design stuff and not really use the Os
I love “Wind UI” and “K Complex” a lot. I have to admit I really don’t like all of the others, but that’s a nice effort from those people, congratz !
