The KDE Project today announced the immediate release of KDE 3.0beta1 based on QT 3.0, the third generation of KDE’s free & easy-to-use, Internet-enabled desktop for Linux and other UNIXes. This second pre-release of KDE 3.0, which follows two months after the release of KDE 3.0alpha, ships with the core KDE libraries, the core desktop environment, and over 100 applications from the other base KDE packages (administration, multimedia, network, PIM, utilities, development, etc.). KDE 3.0 is scheduled for final release in the second quarter 2002, with one or more intervening “RC” releases preceding the final release. Read the changes made to Beta1.
I find it interesting that KDE is progressing so quickly compared to GNOME. In terms of Desktop, GUI, Applications, etc. it really is a superior project. It seems to me that with KDE 3 one could finally say there is an alternative Desktop to Windows. I love that it is OS agnostic. I hear it is running on Cygwin which I find totally ironic. Maybe it is time to create a Win32 GUI wrapper around QT.
QT does run on Win32….nativly.
KDE will not be ported over to Win32 though because the QT licence is not free on that platform. I do not think that KDE will be ported ever unless someone thinks they can make money on it so they can pay for the QT licence. that or one day the KDE team creates a QT clone and replces QT with the clone. those are the only situations that it will be ported over.
from http://kde-cygwin.sourceforge.net/faq.php
“Porting the GPL version to Win32 should not be a massive effort, since it’s the same sources used in the professional version, just with the Win32 code missing.”
Trolltech sells a commercial version of QT for Win32. Soon the GPL UNIX version will be ported via Cygwin libraries and KDE will be Free on every platform.
I did not refute that QT could not be ported, I just said that QT would not be ported to Win32 because the people porting it would have to make money off it so they could support the QT licence(since they have to purchace the pro Licence on win32)
the fact about cygwin is that it is not win32 so I was not including it.
ream my statment again.
