Anyway, back on topic. Crux was the first Linux distro I used. 🙂 What an educational experience it was. I encourage Linux power users, Debian, Gentoo and Slackware users in particular to give it a try. Just for fun.
Mhm. I have 3 legit copies of XP on my personal network. I have one linux box, an OpenBSD box, three FreeBSD boxen, and a box running OS/2 Warp 4.
I have no trouble with paying for software. If it’s good. I refuse to give MS another dime of my hard-earned cash. What has MS done to deserve it? No company has a right to make money. They have a right to try, but nobody has to buy their product or service.
The fact is, if I was a “troll” I would get moderated down. However, I did not since my opinions are in fact shared by the OSNews editorial staff. You on the other hand are a 14 year old pimply faced Linux zealot who will never get a real job because you’re too busy stealing other companies’ code and incorporating it into your crappy “open source” programs. Go away, OSNews is for law-abiding citizens only.
You’re not getting modded down because :
– this site has been floodded with off-topic trolls like yours
– os news is terribly understaffed to deal with all these trolls (probably because they are mature adults and don’t really expect this type of behaviour
– it’s summer and a lot of people are on holiday (like eugenia and probably others)
– for staff members living in europe, its the middle of the night
Please stop the name calling and random off topic posting, this is a news source not some e-warzone for holy wars (they can be fun, but in the right place)
I decided not to mod down Danger’s post, because, though it isn’t on topic, and it’s obviously a troll, it’s obviously a troll! I mean, come on people! “Linux users use drugs?” This posting is a joke. You should read it, chuckle to yourself, and move on with your life. If you have something that you can say that adds to the joke, then go ahead. But please don’t waste your and our time refuting his outrageous points point-by-point.
1. Many companies can make money from selling linux.
(no monoply)
2. The best distribution wins (will make linux better becouse many companies compete to make the best distro) better distros more buyers..
3. Other operatingsystems can co-exsist with linux since it does not hide any parts of its internals. This allows more companies that endorse other OS’s to make more money.. like apple and microsoft..
4. People will pay for linux even if it is available free.. RedHat is proof of that..
I’ve modded down nearly the entire thread. I happen to agree with Dave that this was a joke, not a troll. But since so many continued to respond, I decided to nip this in the bud and just mod the whole thing down. We may be victims of increased trolling, but that doesn’t meant everyone needs to respond to each troll.
sorry for responding to the original post, but I found it funny. I instantly took that as sarcasm. anyhow. It is interesting to see new distros pop up, but if these guys are comparing it to gentoo, no thanks. I tried gentoo for 2 months, I dont know what i did but I took down my linux system just by trying to install alsa. call me stupid or whatever, but i’m back to redhat (running apt-get). works great, easy install.
gentoo is great, i should say emerge is great, but I dont really want to go through another install like that again. Otherwise, apt-get is just as nice. Compiling everything didnt make my pc run any faster vs precompiled rpms (maybe its just me). I like gentoo minus the install process and set up of devices (i’m not savvy on config files in linux enough). M y personal experience has only been with slackware, redhat, gentoo. out of all of them I still feel that redhat got it right so far (overall, not on everything).
That modded down Danger guy… Oh my god and then you wonder why so many people in the world hate Americans if you have someone just like Danger as president…
Back to topic: Crux seems like a nice distro… Might try it out one day.
Its small, optimized (read i686), very much up-to-date, easy maintainable, has a clean filesystem, has a very nice and understandable package system (its very easy to create new buildfiles/packages). The package system has no dependency management which I consider a great advantage, since most package systems with dependency checking does not handle it very well, and those which do is too complex to understand and makes creation of your own packages harder than it should be (if needed).
There are many other good reasons for using Crux. The main reason I use it is because I want full control of my Linux system and the applications/files I install. I want things to be simple (no bloated startup scripts etc.).
Compared to other distros, Crux actually forces the Keep It Simple principle as much as possible. As a developer, this is what I want. I been running Crux for almost 2 years now and Im very pleased with it. I recommend it to both newbies and experienced users.
Try it out – Im sure you will come to experience why Crux is so great! :o)
And please people, STICK TO THE TOPIC!

Crux was one of my first distributions, I still install it and run it from time to time. Very neat and clean. Stripped docs, info, and useless other stuff. Very simple install, very simple pkg system.
Danger, I agree with you a 100%.

Oh, and I love you Danger.

Do you miss Gentoo? Your are the first Gentoo dissident I’m aware of.

Besides being lightweight what does it have other ligtweight donesn’t ? It good to see plenty of distros but I have lost count on distros.

Definately worth trying.
