If you can come over to Warpstock Europe 2003 you can check for your selves that there is still some animo in the OS/2 – eComStation world
There are even two Java 1.4.x implementations available : one by Golden Code (native development) and one by Innotek (using the Windows version together with Odin)
Probably because OS/2 (afaik) does not have a Linux emulation layer to run the JDK on. So you can imagine, that will lower the demand somewhat for FreeBSD.
If it’s not about legal reasons nor money, I don’t think sane person could even start thinking on replacing win2k with something like ecomstation(ok if you got commodore c64 or you are running AmigaOS you maybe _might_ have a look).
Also lotus suite doesn’t even come close to beeing _able_ to compare to office2K. just pure facts of life.
Obviously you use Linux. Linux users cannot stand the thought of any other operating system advancing. They have spent hours learning just how to use single commands like “vi” and as such, they have a tremendous time investment in the Linux operating system. Can you imagine how devestating it is to them to learn that there are other operating system that are easier to use? If I was in their place, I too would resort to denial and propaganda. Hence, you see these posts every time there is a news item regarding OS/2, and simliar posts to Syllable stories. Please also read http://bsd.slashdot.org, after adjusting your viewing threshold to -1, for the best example of Linux bigotry. Linux advocates claim to be for the promotion of “free” (free as in YOU WILL USE MY LICENSE DAMNIT), but in reality they are only pro-Linux, and anti-everything else.
and yet FreeBSD still doesn’t have a modern native JDK…
That’s a misconception that just won’t die. A java jdk can be compiled from the ports collection, you just need a jdk running under Linux emulation to bootstrap the build.
After you’ve done this just tar up the result and distribute to your servers/workstations. The reason you have to do this is because Sun won’t certify the port, so it can’t be distributed like the Linux/win32 ports. I believe this is because certification is rather costly.
Now you guys can all go play Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates at http://www.puzzlepirates.com/ (maybe; the OS X folks have trouble with 1.4.1, but that could be an OS X specific problem).
All 3 of us OS/2 users couldn’t be happier.
Too bad the current version is 1.4.2…
All 3 of us OS/2 users couldn’t be happier.
Since almost every bank and airline in the world uses OS/2, I think you mean “All 3 million of us OS/2 users couldn’t be happier”

Don’t be that negative.

What’s wrong with this picture?

The difference of J2SE 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 is the inclusion of the new look and feel.
Windows version of J2SE 1.4.2 gets a WinXP look and feel.
Linux version of J2SE 1.4.2 gets a GTK look and feel.
I’m sure no one will using OS/2 will care for them.
Here is the info for the FreeBSD native port:
http://www.freebsd.org/java/dists/14.html
Altough a little out of topic I have become more interested in the ecomstation (late version) to substitute my windows 2000 (Linux doesn’t).
Now with Java2 it’s even more tempting.
There is some reviews here in osnews but real life feedback with this OS would be welcome.
For a home PC is the Lotus Suite on par with MS Windows Office 2000 ?
(a little too expensive for my dual Pentium III — ecomstation OS CDs + extra smp pack + Lotus Suite/Apps pack — )

Thanks. I’m not even close to a sane person … (don’t want to – maybe sometimes).
You said it, there is no on par substitute. I am a kind of tired w/ windows 2k. We will have to wait.
I have used websphere for Linux and I suspect it’s like Lotus on ecomstation (just an old version).
(do you use ecomstation ?)
There are 2 companies that have done Java 1.4.x. Golden Code’s being thr most recent, but Innotek also has a release. http://innotek.de
Thanks, though.
