“Arch Linux is one of those quiet and little-known distributions, rarely figuring in the headlines of major Linux news publications. Fortunately, the recent release of Arch Linux 0.5 and a continuously evolving changelog present enough proof that its developers and package maintainers are hard at work. Distrowatch speaks to Judd Vinet, the creator and lead developer of Arch Linux and its “pacman” software management utility about the origins of Arch Linux, its special features, plans and other topics related to the development of this fine distribution.
It’s time for me to report this guy to SCO and the DoHS for violating SCO’s IP by disturbing Linux code without their permission and supporting terrorism along with communism. While were at it we can send this Lin-terror-communist and a few of his supporters to some third world country for a little interrogation session. Hopefully we can get the names and where about of his fellow Lin-Queda terrorist friends, handlers as well as his supporters before they violate SCO’s IP again and continue furthering their Lin-terror-communist plots around the globe.
It’s no joking matter when people in power actually have a similar kind of attitude.
You really need to quit this anti-linux propaganda campaign that you’ve been trying to execute, it’s all crap.
The fact that the free software movement has some similarities to communism does not make it communism by any means. And trying to stir the public’s emotions by calling what linux is doing “terrorism” is just way too extreme.
Your whole Linux=communism argument is derived from similarities between the two, that’s like saying that because 1 is a number, and 2 is a number that: 1 = 2
It doesn’t work that way, and is not that clear cut.

Do you ppl even know what communism is?
Or do you have that USA idea that it’s a desise?
Would communism applied to OSS be a good idea? Why not?
He is just a troll looking for attention. Probably his parents are away and he has nothing better to do.
that we have “arch” and “ark” linuxes.
Reminds me of Eddie Murphy’s ‘Coming to America’:
“They’re McDonald’s, I’m Mick Dunnel’s. They have the golden arches, I have the golden arcs.”
“Lin-Queda” <- That’s a new one.
topspeed’s post sounds more like a bad attempt at some sarcasm, not an anti linux agenda. Relax guys…
If you want to play politics with Linux, it would better be described as a meritocracy.
“A social system which allows people to achieve success proportionate to their talents and abilities, as opposed to one in which social class or wealth is the controlling factor.”
It was McDowells
Reminds me of Eddie Murphy’s ‘Coming to America’:

Yeah – went and found the quote …
“They are McDonalds, we are McDowells. They have
the Golden Arches, we have the Golden Arcs. They
have the Big Mac, we have the Big Mick. They have
two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese
pickles onions on a sesame seed bun. We also have
two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese
pickles onions… but they’re no seeds on OUR
buns.”
Still, quite happy that I remembered even what I did. Haven’t seen that film in 10+ years. 😀
Of course, that film has one TRULY unforgettable line, namely:
“The royal penis is clean”
Er, that should be : ” The royal penis is clean, Your Highness”
And what about the real subject? 13 posts without a single comment yet really related to Arch Linux… 13-0 for Topspeed and trolling.
Can’t you see that some of those trolls are just trying to get you concentrate on them & their crap instead of the real subject and facts? Besides, if they are trolls, they won’t usually shut up just because you tell them to do so. Only moderators can do that. If there’s really something worth replying sometimes, ok, reply, but forget all the childish crap, it is not worth your attention.
As for Arch Linux, many say that its is really fast (i686 optimized). Probably it is, but that sort of claims are often very subjective. Many swear on the superior speed of source-based distributions but others deny that completely. It would be interesting to have real unbiased comparative speed tests between a few distributions with a different approach (e.g. Gentoo, Redhat, Vector, Arch & Debian), a test like what they have here: http://articles.linmagau.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&f…
to be honest, I was making trying to make a satirical nod to the general comment about how there seem to be so many variations of Linux, with next to nothing to distinguish them, despite their protestations.
Even in name.
An article on another Linux is great: good for them for undertaking it. I read up before hand. It has a great-looking package manager.
But I would like to think that it is possible to discuss things without sticking strictly to the raw technical details: isn’t there a bigger picture regarding distro proliferation at issue here too.
I hope that this has managed to “arc” what you consider to be a tangential and seditious post back to something more OS-based.

True. Yeah, sorry, all of you were not just replying the first post by topspeed, I was wrong about that.
True also that there is an incredible and ever increasing amount of Linux distributions ou there – so that they may soon have hard time even to come up with distinctive enough names for new distros… (but aren’t Arch & Ark at least pronounced differently…?;-) But who could stop that? Eventually it might also help the innovation and development by introducing more new & not only evolutionary but sometimes even revolutionary ideas to the larger developer community.
I guess that I get to be the first to actually post about Arch. I have been running it for over a year on several boxes and it is by far the best linux distro that I have used.
It is very simple to admin and has all of the nice features of the BSD’s. It can be used as a pure binary distro like Debian, pacman -S <package> will install a binary package from the remote servers and pacman -Syu will update all installed packages to the latest version in the repository being tracked. Of course, source can be easily used via abs which is simlar to BSD ports. It is also very easy to create your own repository for source and binary packages, which is great for server admins.
I highly recommend anyone who is looking for a distro that is easy to admin for serious *nix users to give Arch a try.
