Trolltech today announced the release of Qt, version 3.2. Qt, Trolltech’s C++ multiplatform application framework, is the industry-leading C++ tool used to create applications that run natively on Windows, Linux/Unix and Mac OS X, all from the same codebase. The release of Qt 3.2 includes hundreds of enhancements and features that enable developers to build high-performance, low-maintenance multiplatform applications.
This means KDE 3.2 will come out tomorrow, right?
Hmmmm, it says it has drivers for IBM DB2 but I wonder if that means I can also access a remote iSeries box? I’d love to be able to access iSeries data from a FreeBSD box running QT based applications or any other type of application (web application, etc) for that matter. So far I don’t think there are any open source ODBC drivers to access data from an iSeries. I guess I can do it from Linux but that’s no good.
to games as well..? — Sorry, I haven’t got a clue about programming.
Canopy group is fond of suing their customers. Be very careful with license, or any other contract.
Personally, I would touch any product from a canopy owned company.
Aw, man you’ve got to be kidding. They are part of that group too. I am profoundly disappointed. ๐
If I recall correctly, Canopy has a very small interest in Trolltech. To think that they exercise control over Trolltech is a bit of a stretch.

That sounds like it was spoonfed to OSNews. You could at least aspire to report impartially.
>> That sounds like it was spoonfed to OSNews. You could at least aspire to report impartially.
Umm…that’s pretty impartial and doesn’t really give a bias towards one product. QT is mlutiplatform, is the industry-leading C++ tool, and is used to create apps that run on those platforms. I don’t see how posting fact makes it impartial.
Correction: …makes it biased.
FYI, trolltech is 70% owned by its employees, so they are the decision-makers
It is simply a copy/paste of their press release.
I sent them a letter about the composition of their setup. They certainly aren’t a Canopy Group company, as much as the Canopy Group likes to announce on their website, since they own just over 4% of Trolltech’s stock. SCO owns an additional 1.6%. I encourage everyone to write them about their opinions about having SCO and Canopy group as stock holders in their corporation. As a private company they have full control over the composition of their ownership.
It is simply a copy/paste of their press release.
I know it’s your website and all (and this could be considered ‘off topic’) but that’s kinda lazy.
Surely the utopia of any news site is impartial commentry. Copying/pasting press releases is about as far away as you can get from that utopia.
When you decide to pay me for the work, maybe I will stop being lazy.
I have followed the development of this toolkit. The Developers now seem to be more concentrated on their work that almost every month they release a new version. http://www.fox-toolkit.org/news.html
Hope they can keep up their work with Qt guys. Qt is still much too expensive to be used in any small commercial software development. FOX Toolkit has almost the same solution as Qt and it s also cross platform
jall
The FOX kit looks very interesting. I’m going to have to look into that. How does it compare to Qt or wxWindows? I found Qt heads above wxWindows. Any personal programming experience?
to games as well..? — Sorry, I haven’t got a clue about programming.
It depends, most of the the time you would draw directly to the screen using something like openGL or SDL. However you could use QT and draw to a canvas widget like the games that come with KDE do, some toolkits also have openGL widgets (I don’t know if QT has one).
Hope that helps.
It’s free info. I don’t see you spending uncounted hours digging up all latest scoops on this stuff. What have you contributed to the world lately?
You do a great “WORK,” Eugenia.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
Oh yeah, Charlie, eat shit and die of a bellyache.
Charlie had a good point — this site is called OSNews, not OSAnnouncements…
Regardless, your reaction was ridiculously extreme. It is, however, another example of someone with a crush on Eugenia coming to her ‘rescue’…
I know my husband will disagree with you on the your idea that I have a crush on Eugenia. Fact is, I do admire her. Girls can exist in a tech related job. There are not many women who have the ability to report on computer news or even have the intrest. I guess that’s why you assumed I was a man. Errr! Girls ain’t-got-no smarts when it comes to tech stuff, huh!
As far as passing on anouncments (press releases), there isn’t a news organization in the world that I can name which does not participate in passing on press releases. It’s their job! It is impossible to think a news organization can possibley put together every piece of new they report on. Reporting on a press release is news. Think about it. Have a little appreciation for the free service that OSnews provides.
IMHO it is too expensive if I compare it to other systems (GTK, Kylix, wxWindows) and the features are not enought for this price. The QT designer is very nice, but the integrated debugging, compiling support is missing. And C# (mono, portable .net, M$ .NET) support also can be a nice feature.
And IMHO about $500 is the real price for this product. In this case it can comparable to other commercial developer tools (M$ Visual Studio, Borland stuffs, etc).
Qt does have an OpenGL canvas. I was going to use Qt for a project, but the cost was too high. I investigated wxWindows (which also has an OpenGL canvas), and it’s a similar product but FREE. IMHO Qt is nice, but not as nice as Trolltech thinks (especially when you look at the free alternatives). ๐
I would have gladly gone with QT for the commercial product that our company produces except that the price is way too high. A small company with 7 developers would suffer greatly with those per developer costs.
“Girls can exist in a tech related job.”
No argue with that.
“There are not many women who have the ability to report on computer news or even have the intrest.”
Errrr….interest, perhaps not. Ability? Of course they do, just as I’ve got the ability to skydive even though I’ve never done so. Now, if you’re referring to the lack of a female reporters over at eg cnet or zdnet, that’s another story. Still, a domain doesn’t cost much these days so if someone is interested in reporting on tech stories, there’s not much stopping him/her/it.
“I guess that’s why you assumed I was a man. Errr! Girls ain’t-got-no smarts when it comes to tech stuff, huh!”
I can’t see that he wrote or implied that. Looks like you’re putting words in his textfield…
I will grant you that it might be a bit OTT to complain about a _free_ news service posting press releases.
On the other hand, anyone ending a comment with “Oh yeah, Charlie, eat shit and die of a bellyache.” is hardly worth any attention. Get back here when you know how to act your age (I assume that you’re not 14 since you’re married)!
Qt is ported, now waiting for kdelibs.
I want my KDevelop in OS X.
I know a few that’d become happy campers if they KDevelop would proliferate over a few platforms such as Windows and MacOS X.
wxWindows, unlike QT, is free and uses native controls on all platforms as far as possible.
There’s also wxPython (Python bindings for wxWindows), which make writing cross platform GUI’s easier than ever.
You could even use C++ for systemsprogramming and still use wxPython for the GUI using Boost::Python to connect them.

http://www.wxpython.org
http://www.boost.org
The QT designer is very nice, but the integrated debugging, compiling support is missing.
Enlighten me, what do I need compiling and debugging for in a GUI Builder?
I have a build system for the first and a debugger for the second.
And in case I really need this somehow integrated I use an IDE.
A small company with 7 developers would suffer greatly with those per developer costs.
Well, this depends on the product and on the wages of the developers.
Our company has similar size (6 developers) and Qt licences are a fraction of what a developers costs during a project.
And Qt can be used for more than one project.

You just can’t argue with that… although where’s the passion and pride you used to have?
On another note, ‘Chris’, girls like you do womankind a disservice. My comments were justified and reasonable, and completely gender unrelated. (Where did the ‘woman can…’ thing come from? Who argued otherwise?) And I have submitted news to OSNews before, as do others. This is more of a community site than you might think.
Well, unfortunately girls tend to be more likely to be influenced by what their pairs do and what society expects of them. My sister, however, is probably the exception.
I too would love to see more females in work which is still dominated by men. Back in New Zealand there was a big commotion made about the fact that a woman had finished her appreticeship as an automotive engineer. My reaction to a friend was, “why aren’t there more women out there doing that?”.
Now, there is an old group of men who want to exclude women from certain jobs, however, what I have always said is this, if she is the right person for the job, then they should get it. Appointments should never be done on anything other than the persons ability.
