A Lycoris community member named “jmcqk6” has created two unofficial “television” commercials. One is in QuickTime and the other in Flash. They can be seen here.

This is news because???
Point made
They aren’t even imaginative… it just rips off the mastercard adds
Those are pathetic commercials. God, I was thinking someone with creativity had done it..
yay!
They aren’t *that* bad ๐
These ads are pretty poor all round. Bad graphics, editing, and sound. Nevermind the entire cocept (‘priceless’) is just ripped from another ad. This guy shouldn’t give up his day job to become an editor, that much is certain.
too bad I’m at work and can’t see them…LOL…are they really that bad?
well that just wasted a minute of my life (and i’ll never have it back…)
So OSNews made news that Lycoris has an ad. He he. How much did Lycoris pay OSNews to get their ad as the top item in the news list? Or is this just an editorial nightmare?
The change of the article title?
before it was “Unofficial”…..I guess when OSNews.com got the check from Lycoris they changed it. ๐

Anyone know how long it is until the Keynote @ WWDC starts?
I’ve been refreshing OSNews and Apple since 3pm BST….
This blurb does bring up a good point, though. Linux should have television commercials. To help grab ‘mindshare’. Maybe Lycoris should advertise themseleves as Linux, but as another OS. A ‘superiour OS’. If people (read: Joe Sixpack) start going to CompUSA and asking ‘hey, what do you know about that new Lycoris thing. Is it really better than what I’ve got?’ And since Mr.Sixpack is probably running Windows 98, the answer would be a resounding YES.
Normally I would be fully in support of humorous or semi-profession “commercials” for alternative products, but this… this is pathetic. Not even I could produce something this bad.
The commericals are so bad, they must have been made on Linux.
You guys are way too harsh. They’re obviously meant to be funny little spots rather than true attempts at commercials.
At least it wasn’t more solicitations of her OS designs or a posting of her husbands opinions on BeOS.
THe author didn’t want them to be released as they aren’t ready. He said so in this forum:http://www.lycoris.org/viewtopic.php?topic=8934&forum=33
give the guy a break already….it’s not an official lycoris ad either.
Take the feather out of your butt and cut the guy some slack. Don’t like it, don’t watch it. Better yet for all you whinners, put your artwork where your wise ass comments are – if you “think” you can do better – prove it – or shut the fuck up. Man this site is heading down the tubs.
1. It’s no news.
2. ads are ugly, stretched bitmaps.
3. He uses Flash. I bet he used Windows to run Flash MX in.
4. So the point in his ad is pointless.
Those commercials sucked. They ripped off Mastercard ads, which Mastercard is known to take legal action for ripping off the pricless ads. And the commercials were extremely amature… I give it two thumbs down.
Not only is he a professional editor, but he is coding his own OS!
Here is a transcript from his “computer” link found at:
http://j.students.umkc.edu/jmcqk6/comp/MyOS/
“Welcome to MyOS
Current stable version: none
About MyOS:
MyOS is a new operating system with a need for speed. I’m not sure what other cool stuff it will have, only that it will by My OS, and that will be cool.”
Let me know when you have a stable release Josh!!
Lycoris “doesn’t have a commercial” — the guy made them only for the fun of it – nobody asked for it and he doesn’t want anything out of it either. BTW, this is no news no matter how you twist it.
This has to be the worst news post ever… Even Slashdot would not post this crap…
I guess Linux doesn’t make you any cooler. I can’t… argh… it’s so fucking poor! If you can’t do it right, don’t do it – do something else.
Having read the existing comments I won’t watch the commercials. Lycoris needs a better product before anyone tries to create commercials. Lycoris is just too slow and outdated as it uses KDE2.
Anyone who calls himself a Guru needs serious help.
Never did I expect such reactions to these short clips. Of course a few things have been slightly skewed, so I’m going to take the time to set a few things straight:
>Internet Guru / Digital Video Editor”??

>Anyone who calls himself a Guru needs serious help.
Well, that was meant as a joke. I never expected this to be read around the world, only by people mainly here on campus that I create websites for. They would understand that this is funny.

Hmm, bad taste of language, but I can forgive that. I’m still learning.

Well, they are plenty of other take off’s on that commercial floating around the web; I simply thought that Linux/Lycoris needed one.

Well, I’m actually pretty creative, except when I’m trying to be. Checkout my compositions if you want an example.

You’d be surprised.

Actually I used Mac’s, becuase I haven’t figured out how to do it in linux yet. The ad(s) did have a point, and that was to have a laugh and move on.
mastercard is suing anyone who uses the word ‘priceless’ in any sentence used in any conversation or written text on the planet. why? They own the patent to the word and the trademark in the usa.
better get a good laywer – stat!
The “journalist” must be the editor’s relative… Shucks!

This is the discussion we really should be having. As non slick as this little ad is, the right idea is there — make Linux look easy and fun.
I think it’s time a Linux company started putting ads in mainstream print and TV commericals. Fiendishly expensive, yes, but a damn good idea. It would wake people up to the idea that there is an alternative to MS and it’s way freaking cheaper.
And if I were Lycoris, I wouldn’t mention Linux at all. Build the brand name of Lycoris and put the fact that it is a linux way back in the teeny print.
You’re absolutely right. That’s one of the big reasons Lycoris hasn’t migrated to kde3……it’s all about desktop experience. They have so many little tweaks in their version of KDE that you can’t knock it simply for not being kde3. Plans are in place to have kde3 libs provided by lycoris so we can run all the newer apps, and there is a pretty cool community project headed up primarily by community member boford and some other dedicated souls…..
Lycoris has a plan. Lycoris has a good community. Lycoris has users that like to do fun stuff….like messing around with flash ads.
Some people need to grow up a little…..
This stuff sucks!
Yikes! I can’t believe it! These were obviously meant as fun little jabs at ridiculously pompous products. Get over it! Some of you need to read the terms of posting comments. Get real!
Its pretty said how a big majority of you people flame every little thing. These weren’t intended to be released, he was just having *fun*. He chose to do so on his own free time. Now come on people, how LOW can you people get…
/me walks away shaking his head….
That was really uncalled for. Eugenia worked once as a UI designer before marrying Mr. Queru. Her opinions on the UI, which is probably what you meant by “more solicitations of her OS designs”, is well respected, and if you got to any different projects, her opinions actually take weight. And as for her husband’s opinion on Zeta (not BeOS, nobody calls OS X as OpenStep even though it is based on it), he is an engineer that once worked for Be, and was rather active in the Be community before leaving Be and working for a non-Be related company, thus leaving BeOS (almost) completely.
So my conclusion is that you are one of those trolls that is angry at Eugenia for reprimanding you for, *gasp*, trolling. My opinions clashes a lot with Eugenia, yet I never attacked her and I respect her.
I think most people are angry of the fact that it was posted here on OSNews.
Jeezus Kryst, you people flaming these obvious parodies need to get a fucking life. If the best thing your day has to offer you is to get your shorts in a twist because of an attempt at humor, then I pity you. So I’m going on record, echoing the sentiments of those who say if you don’t like it, quit griping…you’re giving Linux users a bad name!
By they way, to the creators of these commercial parodies, I get it, and I like it. Bravo!
I like this add, and I thank the guy who made it, it’s ace. ๐
By the way… I am the guy who posted this as news, because I thought it was interesting and other people might like to see it, plus Lindows.com just had a silly flash thing posted here too… Oh and no I did not ask permission first, the guy who created this did not want me to post it… So I am sorry to everyone! ๐
