Ok I just posted this message a few minutes ago and it seems to have disappeared. But I was asking who uses this OS? I’ve never heard of it…
I don’t see what the problem was here…I was simply asking if anyone uses it because I was interested in it? Why do you think I was being sarcastic? I think you need to relax a little…
Look at the moderated down section. You’ll find you have earned the honor.
It hasn’t dissapeared. I moded it down, click the link below to view it. Because your first comment was the root of all flamewars regarding hobby OSes.
Are you new over here? SkyOS is a hobby OS, it is not a commercial/full pledged one. There is a whole set of such hobby OSes that we report on OSNews. They are development experiments, sometimes even usable. They are not your new Windows.
Well then I appologize. I never intended to start any flamewars. I was just interested in hearing from people who have tried the OS. And yes, I just started coming to this web page about a week ago…
I can’t use it personally as my hardware is mac, but it looks a great OS from just a hobbist. A cleaner UI than some Linux distros <ducks>. Really shows what a small group can do. Good work.
For a hobby OS it looks pretty nifty. Having a live CD is definitely a plus. Much easier to try. It’ll have to wait for tonight tho’
the hobby OS creaters are what keeps the internet wild and free, the way it was meant to be. without them we click where we are told.
I think it is funny that there are comments here complimenting SkyOS on its appearance, and yet it looks almost exactly like Windows 95. If you like that look…why not just use Windows?
i looked all over their site for a license and couldn’t find one.. anyone happen to know? is it proprietary or some flavour of open?
I hope this iteration of Skyos plays nice with bochs. I’ve tried installing it there and – well, it’s better it hanging bochs than it hanging up my own box.
Downloaded the iso, and have had a successful installation onto the hard drive. Anyone else used skyos? I’m having some problems getting it to dial with my serial modem that I cant seem to resolve.
when I read the “About” file on the Sky OS page. Seems to be a compact OS (regarding the number of code lines) with a good software collection, including a Java VM and dev tools.
On the other hand the SkyOS screenshots look a bit simply. A start menu like the one of Windows is not very innovative and some widgets seem not complete to me, e. g. in the file selector box I miss a file type menu or in the font selector a style menu.

Finally got it to work. I read the doc’s and think I might have to make a partiton soon. If what I read is true then there really is a chance that this OS could run windows and linux apps and maybe even beos apps too.
For a one man show this is a whale of a project! Wow! Really seems to be moving along.
Wish they could add this to the openbeos somehow.
Seems really well done.
Ok, made some improvements to FileSelector:
– File Type selection
– File Type pattern search (e.g. *.app)
– Optional regular expression search (e.g. ^.*.app$)
– You may switch between List and IconView
– Minor bugfixes…
