Microsoft will debut Pocket PC 2003–code-named Ozone–on June 23, according to sources close to the company. The operating system is not expected to be a major revision of Pocket PC 2002, but it will include new features such as built-in support for wireless technologies Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The OS overhaul will occur in the next version of the operating system, code-named ‘Magneto’, due out next year. Get more mobile computing news on our sister site, NewMobileComputing.com.
“The OS overhaul will occur in the next version of the operating system”
this sound worrying; i do hope that at least proper xscale support is included in ppc 2003
Yay, a port of .Net to a PocketPC device. This makes my current PocketPC nice and slow with almost no visible differences from it’s predecessor.
This seems like more of an interim release than anything else.
What does Linux have to offer in the PDA front? Do they have calendars and stuff that you can sync with Evolution, or whatever ? Any Linux-based GPS stuff out there ?
theres lots in in PPC 2002 that needs work
for one the File Explorer columns can’t be expanded so if your file name is longer than 8 char your stuck geussing. IE needs loads of work, some native java support would be nice. ummm pocket windows networking support, console, taskmanager…. oh yeah loads of stuff that need work
I don’t own a pocket pc myself, but i once borrowed a
palm m515, attached it to the usb port, and was
instantly able to sync contacts with KDE’s addressbook,
calendar items with Korganizer, notes with Knotes. I was
surprised at how well it worked. I also saw the other day
that newer evolution versions can sync with palms too (i
saw the menu item). Didn’t try it, tho.
When can we expect OSNEWS.com to get good forums like the one there?
BTW the site looks nice, you should put a link to it on osnews and a link to osnews on newmobilecomputing.com (damn taht’s long).
Since there really doesn’t seem to be much new in this release it would seem kind of pointless for current Pocket PC owners to upgrade considering the next substantial upgrade is in the works. And it may discourage new buyers from buying new models.
>When can we expect OSNEWS.com to get good forums like the one there?
Never. There is nothing wrong with the Phorum forum we use on OSNews, it works just fine. It is the same non-threaded functionality pretty much. No reason to upgrade, especially because phpBB does not render on older browsers, while OSNews’ main goal code-wise is to render on as many OSes as we can. No matter how weird these OSes/browsers might be.

Just check on the left hand side of this comment. Do you see the “Mobile Computing News” table?

Then just use http://www.nmcx.com
I own two Sharp Zaurus´s 1 5500 and a 5600 (www.zaurus.com) one for the road, in my car as a gps/navigator and one in my pocket for coding (perl/php and c, listen to mp3, watch videos and play games, it also runs a webserver/php its the most cool device i ever have owned.I replaced to original qt/sharp os with openzaurus.
There are really tons and tons of apps for it like servers/utils/games/multimedia etc..
The Zaurus runs Linux 2.4.20 and Java.Qtopia connects with the desktop (linux) but there are like a dozen alternatives
for the zaurus.I never have synced with evolution but i expect evolution only to sync with a palm or visor device.

ppc2002 devices were designed with flash and all to be upgradable.. will be VERY interesting to see if ppc2002 owners will be able to flash-upgrade.. I bet NOT! the whole point of standardising on cpu + componentry was for easy of app-dev and upgrades…
soo… will be fun to watch what happens!
will be VERY interesting to see if ppc2002 owners will be able to flash-upgrade.. I bet NOT!
hmmm, what exactly are you saying? I’ve flashed my Axim twice now(no real reason, was hoping a minor bug would be fixed… alas, no), and it’s trivial to upgrade an iPaq, too. so, since it’s technically possible, I’m assuming you mean will the manufacturer make a new rom available. it’s going to be interesting to see if the manufacturers decide it’s a convenient point to EOL some of their models.
Expect the next one to be called Xavier, then Cyclops, Jean Grey,etc…..Sinister, Apocalypse!!!
Sorry I couldn’t resist that. It is the first thing that popped in my head as I started reading about it.
Here’s some info about my Linux-based PDA:
http://sorn.net/linux/zaurus
It’s got some of the PocketPC’s new features:
– Bluetooth support
– WiFi Support
– Mono (for running .Net apps)
As for Simon’s list of PocketPC problems and features::
* PPC File Explorer – My PDA’s for “FileManager” which has no problem with long filenames.
* IE needs loads of work – I’ve got Opera – it’s perfect for all site I’ve used it with so far.
* some native java support would be nice – The Zaurus has that.
* windows networking support – Linux PDAs can have Samba
* console – You get one on the apps CD that comes with ythe Zaurus
* taskmanager – well… with Linux PDAs, we’ve got Process Manager and the ps command.
I think the Zaurus is lacking a decent paint application, and an eBook reader. Yeah, Opera and XPDF can view documents, but I’d like to fit the entire width of a page on my screen using a small anti-aliased font. They don’t seem to do that.
Also, I think the development kit for the Zaurus and other QTopia based PDAs is excellent. (screenshots of that at the URL i provided)
The pdas with 32Mb flash roms will be able to upgrade, if the manufacturer offers it. Most will, likely at a price.

PocketPC2003 will be delivered (not for free) for the following iPAQ’s:
– 38xx (english only)
– 39xx
– 54xx
Due to the limited ROM (16MB NAND Flash ROM) there will be no upgrade possible for the 19xx.
is that it is a pain to set up the syncing becasue Sharp choose to use TCP/IP over USB and does not set it up for you….at least that is what a review I read a few weeks back said about it.
Sync is no problem at al.

“is that it is a pain to set up the syncing becasue Sharp choose to use TCP/IP over USB and does not set it up for you….at least that is what a review I read a few weeks back said about it.”
Maybe the reviewer had some tech issues using his machine. BUT, the first I ever had my Zaurus, I synced it up just fine and I had no idea it was using TCP/IP at the time.
jaavaaGuru yeah i wanted to get a Zaurus but at the time there new model wasn’t out and the Axims price and Tech specs were just too good be pass up its the best bangyou’re your buck as far as top PPCs go. My friend bought a older Zaurus and i went green with Envy after i saw OpenZaurus and what all he could do with it. At the time i was trying my damnest to get a C++ compiler for my Axim and had to make do with a C’ish language compiler. But the new Zaurus are still a little pricey. I WISH DELL OR SOME ONE WOULD PORT OpenZaurus to the Axim like Compaq did with the iPAQ. oh yeah and if any of you osnews reads have the skills and want a pet project feel free to try. if i can get linux working no my Axim i can finally cut the last chain to windows that i have.
The forum software here SUCKS why not use PHPBB any decent browser can render it fine.
Alex, I EXPLAINED to you why. Because as you said, ONLY “decent” browsers can render phpBB. The non-decent ones, can not (NetPositive can’t, NeXT browsers can’t, SkyOS browser can’t, mobile devices and home TV systems can’t either).
The very reason I created OSNews from scratch was to be able to render on ALL browsers. I put extra care to this! If you don’t understand that, then don’t reply again. It was my design decision since Day 1. I want ACCESSIBILITY even from the most f*cked up browsers around, it is most important for me than to have nice colors and icons.
>The forum software here SUCKS
No, it doesn’t. It does the job JUST FINE. phpBB does NOT support threading either, which is the only thing that a forum can do much differently of what we offer here. Therefore, there is no reason for phpBB. I won’t put the accessibility of this site in danger just so you can see nicer icons.
And use proper subjects.
WTF!
This forum is just fine, loads quickly (some ads do not )
render beautifull and lookalike on all platforms and browser i
use (Linux/Mozilla/Firebird, Beos/Netpostive/Firebird,OpenBSD Mzilla, MacOSX/Netscape/Mozilla, Zaurus Konquer, etc..
I do mostly not agree with Eugenia but she did a great job
with Osnews and all done in spare/free time. I think she
needs a tap on the shoulder for that!
Alex.
Why not build an Osnews like website with phpbb (its always better to code it from ground than some prebuild solution.) and we will see if we are intressted enough to visit it…??
