SuSE Linux A.G. has beaten enterprise competitor Red Hat Inc. to the draw and on Monday will announce the availability of SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 for AMD 64, the first enterprise-ready Linux server OS for the new AMD Opteron CPU to be launched at an event in New York Monday.
…considering SuSE was involved with and actively supporting the formerly x86-64, now amd64 transition from the very beginning (see http://www.x86-64.org/ ).
SuSE is the best server OS on the market today from the Linux side of the fence, I hope they have the very best of luck
It just dilutes their brand name recongnition.
They should just preserve it as a quasi standard, that gets
mentioned as sort of a sub-sub title.
beaten redhat in what? releasing an OS to a CPU that was only announced yesterday and is not even manufactured not to mention the fact that there is no REAL platform to run it.
SuSe may have beaten redhat in releasing this version but lets see how they beat redhat in taking over corp. america.
I think MandrakeSoft already announced a version for opteron way before SuSE

“First” doesn’t matter very much, if it’s not by much. I was under the impression that both RedHat and Mandrake had already committed to x86-64. I’d be extremely surprised if SuSE was the only player in the arena for more than a month.
Now, if RH and Mandrake were really far behind, it would be something else.

What exactly _is_ AMD?

if you have to ask that…i think you are in the wrong forum.
Guys, this article talks about the *Enterprise version* of their distribution. They had a desktop version of their software running on the Opteron, for quite a while now. As I recall, AMD showed off its first samples of the Hammer running 64-bit SuSE linux.
Yep you read it right SuSE Linux server and desktop knocks all other Linux distributions in the dirt, they won in Europe and they will soon be mainstream in the US.
doesn’t belong to RH, it belongs to Windows.
The Corp. America server market belongs to redhat while SuSe has its share in old europe.

Dont worry SuSE will soon be the big dog, its use is growing and will go nowhere but up.
