A big project I’ve been working on recently for Fedora Workstation is what we call flickerfree boot. The idea here is that the firmware lights up the display in its native mode and no further modesets are done after that. Likewise there are also no unnecessary jarring graphical transitions.
Basically the machine boots up in UEFI mode, shows its vendor logo and then the screen keeps showing the vendor logo all the way to a smooth fade into the gdm screen.
People were complaining about this way back when I first actually got into Linux, somewhere in the early 2000s. I guess Fedora finally managed to get it working.
Its easy to underestimate how disconcerting this is for “non techy” users.
The screen flashing and showing code == something is broken. This is a small but important step for those that want to see Linux as a genuine desktop OS
Though I miss the times when, at boot, Linux distros typically showed messagess showing the progress of boot process with [OK] or [FAILED] …it was enchanting, somewhat seeing the inner workings of the thing.
It’s still perfectly possible. Verbose mode is just an opt-in thing these days.
I always turn it on for my machines.

Yeah, I think even you said it once already how verbose can be added to GRUB command line; but I miss the defaults (and note to self: must explore how to do it on Android… )
They “finally” managed to get it working? I’ve had a flickerfree boot with Solus for ages now, so no Thom, this isn’t anything new. The only difference is that Fedora is using Plymouth, which is known to cause graphical issues during boot time, including flickering. So it’s nice that Fedora fixed Plymouth. But again: with Solus, I’ve had a flickerfree, Plymouth-free boot for ages now, so it’s not all that spectacular.
It doesn’t seem to me that they really fixed or improved anything. They just sidestepped the whole issue by not moving away from the efi logo. How is that useful?

I have reFind bootloader for my UEFI and it has graphics mode where it just hides all the text. I’m using Solus linux with reFind and ir manages to do seamless boot experience.
I’m dumbfounded people spent god knows how many hours on something so totally pointless.
Aren’t there any *actual* problems left to fix?
Fedora is a useless mess and has been ever since they they forced Gnome 3 on unsuspecting users, got of the 4 gig dvd install media and forced the use of the very shitty live cd/dvd install media which is frankly useles as an install method if you don’t have a internet connection.
